The first two major Kentucky Derby prep races of the year happen this Saturday when three year olds run in the Grade 1 Florida Derby at Gulfstream Park and then a separate set of three year olds bound down the stretch at Oaklawn Park in the Grade 1 Arkansas Derby.
Also on Saturday, Oaklawn runs the always entertaining Grade 3 Oaklawn Mile and Gulfstream Park runs the Grade 2 Gulfstream Park Oaks, a key Kentucky Oaks prep and the Grade 2 Pan American over the grass.

Mike Maker trained Starting Over and Tawny Port from the Cristophe Clement barn, the first two finishers in the Grade 3 Mac Diarmida Stakes, should attract the most action. But don’t settle on backing chalk.
This year’s Pan American is deep. Lucky Curlin, Kertez, and Harry Hood all have chances. So does Candidate going turf to dirt. Street Ready and Public Sector are also a couple that could be in the mix.

Suncoast Stakes winner and Jorge Delgado trained Power Squeeze could be the one to beat. The Suncoast win was Power Squeeze’s second straight stakes victory since breaking the maiden in her second lifetime race.
Chad Brown trained Ways and Means finished second in the Grade 2 Spinaway in her last. Ways and Means, for sure, will end up the favorite. If you don’t like Ways and Means or Power Squeeze, consider backing a runner like last out maiden winner Do Gooder, Into Champagne, which finished second in the Davona Dale, or Gun Song.

Although Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winner Fierceness bombed in the Holy Bull, the Todd Pletcher runner should go off the chalk on Saturday. Fierceness has the talent to blow this field away. If Fierceness doesn’t fire, Pletcher has some insurance in last out maiden winner Bail Us Out.
Hades, which won the Holy Bull, will attract betting dollars. So will Frankie’s Empire, Grand Mo the First, and Real Macho.

Dennington finished fifth in the Tinsel Stakes in the last. But the Kenny McPeek trained runner has a ton of back class. So we should expect Dennington to go off first or second choice.
Nautical Star, Las Samurai, and Silver Prospector will generate action. Midnight Rising, Frosted Grace, and Necker Island are not without legit shots for the win money. The Oaklawn Mile may end up a small field, but every runner will have a shot to grab the win money.

Brad Cox trained Timberlake may go off at even money to win the Grade 1 Arkansas Derby. The word is out on the Cox trainee. Timberlake took the Grade 2 Rebel in the last and the son of Into Mischief appears to be on the right track.
Will Take It, Dimatic, and Time for Truth should have their fans. Steve Asmussen puts the saddle on Informed Patriot. The horse that could upset Timberlake is the Bob Baffert trained Muth. Although Muth can’t qualify for the Kentucky Derby due to Baffert’s 2024 ban from running horses at Churchill, Bob’s runner has a ton of talent.

This lower level Kentucky Derby prep should be as competitive as it gets. There’s a great chance Todd Pletcher trained Agate Road, second the Grade 3 Sam F. Davis in the last, goes off the chalk.
Other contenders include Lucky Jeremy and Antonio Sano trained Dancing Groom. Northern Flame from the Kenny McPeek barn finished third in the Grade 3 Rebel. Improvement could put Northern Flame into the winner’s circle.

Chad Brown, Mark Casse, and Cherie Devaux will saddle the favorites. Brown projects to put the bridle on the top favorite in well-traveled Adhamo. Casse will run two. Both Strong Quality and Webslinger can upset Adhamo. Joel Rosario steps aboard Beatbox, the Cherie Devaux runner. If Beatbox is at the top of its game, forget it. Rosario gallops that one to the finish line first. Rising Empire, Gigante, and Irish Aces, and Palazzi are others with chances.

Provocateur won in 2022. Then last year, Super Chow took home the Hutcheson. This year, Jorge Delgado trained Valiant Force is likely to attract the most action.

2016 Horse Racing Exchange Wagering to be Launched in New Jersey
Previous Betting News
As one of the pioneers of legalized sports betting in the in the United States, New Jersey is taking another step towards making sportsbetting even more enjoyable and accommodative, particularly to horse racing exchange betting enthusiasts. After they received licenses to operate in exchange wagering from the New Jersey Racing Commission back in November 2015, Betfair US and Darby Development announced last Wednesday that the Garden State is closer to launching exchange wagering on horse races. In fact, if all goes well as planned, bettors will be able to enjoy the exchange betting services as soon as the launch is done on May 10th.
Horse Racing Exchange Wagering to be Launched in New Jersey
Benefits of Exchange Wagering
Unlike the current (and rather limiting) pari-mutuel betting system that requires horse racing bettors to place their wagers without knowing what their final betting odds will be; the exchange wagering allows players to take fixed odds that are locked in at the exact time of their transaction while also making it possible for bettors to request for better odds from those on the exchange platform.
Another advantage about exchange wagering is that you can place a bet against a horse while also trade a horse during the running of a race; something that works perfectly for lovers of live betting. As if that isn’t enough, bettors only pay a commission of around 12 percent of winnings as opposed to the usual takeout rates that charge as much 20 percent in the pari-mutuel wagering. This means more profits for gamblers.
For New Jersey residents, the exchange wagering will also allow the players to participate on the forums actively, unlike the account wagering system in Nevada where visitors are limited to setting up accounts only when they’re visiting.
Market Potential for Horse Racing Exchange Wagering in New Jersey
Betfair, whose parent company is Paddy Power Betfair after the two companies merged in February, pioneered the betting exchange system in the United Kingdom in 2000 and has seen an exponential growth in its clientele base, averaging more than 3 million transactions worldwide per day. Not to forget, Betfair US started its foray into the U.S. market in 2009 with the purchase of the Television Games Network (TVG) and has seen a wild growth in its customers, with New Jersey reportedly offering a perfect opportunity to kick-start the exchange wagering in America.
“Our experience in the UK and other markets has proven that exchange wagering is an attractive prospect for consumers and that it can bring new customers, increased engagement and new revenue to horse racing,” said Kip Levin, CEO of Betfair US. “New Jersey is a great place for us to start and then take our data to other states,” he added.
For interested customers, all you need is to deposit money into a wagering account (Betfair operates the online Betfair Casino in partnership with the Golden Nugget and the 4NJBets wagering platform), though betting can easily be done from the phone, PC or tablet.

Race 4 – 2:30 pm ET – 6 Furlongs Dirt – $8,000 Claiming
Luis Dominguez drops Shakem N Breakem from $16k claiming to $8,000 claiming. Dominguez is 1-of-3 with the move. Shakem won 3 back. The gelding posted a nice work on April 21. If jockey Ronald Allen Jr. can keep this one closer to the pace, Shakem N Breakem should be tough to keep out of the winner’s circle.
5/2 on the morning line Horse Racing Odds Gilded Drama hails from the Gerald Bennett barn. The 23% winning trainer gets the services of jockey Samy Camacho. That alone makes Gilded Drama the one to beat. Samy ensures an exacta finish. Consider for the win if the odds drift higher than the morning line.
Kalu is a 4-year-old gelded son of Ghostzapper. Godolphin owns the Eoin Harty trained runner. If Godolphin is willing to give up on this one, we had better be suspect of Kalu’s chances of winning the race. Third is a possibility. If you bet Kalu to win, you’re playing with fire.
Win: Shakem N Breakem
Place: Gilded Drama
Show: Kalu
Race 5 – 3:00 pm ET – 1 Mile Turf –$75,000 Allowance Optional Claiming
John Rigattieri trained Ally Oop Johnny could get lost in the betting. The morning line is 8/1 but don’t be surprised if we get 10/1 or more. A Chad Brown trained runner and a Michael Stidham trained runner are scheduled to start. The cut back to a mile makes Johnny tough. If the gelding runs back to the performance in the Columbia, it could win this.
Michael Stidham traines Tabled. The Godolphin owned runner finished second by a head in its last. Unlike Ally Oop Johnny, this one won’t get lost in the betting. Don’t put on top unless the price is right.
Amends had a rough go of it in his first race since last December. The Claude McGaughey trained, and Uncle Mo sired 3-year-old colt never picked up its feet in its last when finishing tenth in a 1 1/8 mile turf event. Shug keeps this one on the turf. Amends should improve big time. So, use on top and bottom.
Win: Ally Oop Johnny
Place: Tabled
Show: Amends
Race 6 – 3:30 pm ET – 7 Furlongs Dirt –$8,000 Claiming
This is 4-year-old filly Rachiely’s Dream’s to lose. Trainer Pedro Martinez hasn’t won with the turf to dirt angle. But Dream ran her best race after bombing in a turf event two back. She ran on the turf in her last and bombed. Rachiely’s Dream should get a great spot tracking likely front runner Premier Justice.
John Rigattieri puts the saddle on Premier Justice. The 3-year-old filly ran awful in her last. However, that was her first since racing in a $20,000 claimer in January. She can improve enough off that performance to save second.
Elusive Aura finished second in her last. She may have lucked into the place spot because she went off at over 53/1. She’s good enough to get into the trifecta. But it’s hard to see her duplicating the last effort and scoring another second-place finish.
Win: Rachiely’s Dream
Place: Premier Justice
Show: Elusive Aura

There’s a lot to like about Kathleen O’Connell trained Countess Jessica. The Animal Kingdom sired 3-year-old filly has yet to break her maiden. She ran in a much tougher race in her last, though. She’s got speed and finished second over this dirt at this distance in her first lifetime race. The jockey switch to Antonio Gallardo completes the package.
La Belle de Course finished third by a half a length in her last race. The filly has a win, a second, and a third in 5 races at Tampa Bay. She could get a nice trip right off Countess Jessica. But the odds will be short, which is why we shun for the top spot.
Samy Camacho sticks with Diamond News. The Gerald Bennett trained runner has finished out of the top 3 in one race out of ten. She’s another with a shot to win. But News could bounce because she ran well in her last and goes up in class. Consider for the win only if the odds drift higher than the morning line.
Win: Countess Jessica
Place: La Belle de Course

Race 7 – 3:27 pm ET – 1 Mile Turf –$16,000 Claiming
Trainer Anthony Granitz may have found Barrel of Destiny’s best level and distance. In the 5-year-old mare’s first for Granitz, she performed okay at the $32,000 claiming level. Granitz dropped her price in half and switched pilots to Gallardo. She won by a neck. This event sets up just like that race. Antonio will make sure she has a shot as they turn for home.
On March 21, Igottawhiteface went off the chalk in a carbon copy race to this event. The Michael Tomlinson runner failed to sustain a bid after shifting out and going 3-wide. With a better trip, she can make amends on Friday. The problem with putting her on top? She’s never run as fast as Barrel of Destiny has in that one’s last two.
Haniel will get some play. But this event appears much too short for the Rory Barron trainee. With a fast pace, third is a possibility.
Win: Barrel of Destiny
Place: Igottawhiteface
Show: Haniel
Race 8 – 4:00 pm ET – 1 Mile Turf –$20,000 Allowance
Jordan Blair trained Designing should get a great trip right off Sweetly Maiden and Marnie Girl. The 5-year-old mare bombed in her last. Blair wins 24% at the meet, 40% blinkers off, and 23% first after the claim. The jockey switch to Daniel Centeno helps.
Agi’s Cat barely missed in a similar race on March 7. Cat gets the rail where jockey Harry Hernandez can decide to take the lead or track from the inside. The blinkers could do the trick for the 6/1 on the morning line Tale of the Cat filly.
Connectivity has 3 firsts, 2 seconds, and a third from 9 races. The Midshipman sired 4-year-old filly goes first time for trainer Robert Hess after racing for Steve Asmussen. Hess can get them ready first time, but the chalk is a closer. Also, Connectivity hasn’t raced at a mile since an event at Saratoga back in August 2019.

Place: Agi’s Cat

Gulfstream Park Picks for Friday, April 17
Race 3 – 2:07 pm ET – 1 Mile Dirt – $6,250 Claiming
Price horses can pop at $6,250 claiming races at Gulfstream Park. That’s why we’ll have no regrets if 10/1 morning line choice Sensational Ride doesn’t finish in the Top 3 on Friday. The Dunkirk sired 7-year-old gelding gets a nice setup running in a race with limited speed. Trainer Oscar Gonzalez claimed at $8,000 and drops. Oscar is 1-of-2 with the move.
Another 7-year-old gelding, Big Boy Bruno, deserves exacta consideration. Bruno has a massive 10-6-12 record from 40 races. The gelding has a 7-6-9 record from 38 races at Gulfstream Park and a 2-2-6 record from 16 races at the distance. Jockey Victor Lebron should keep Bruno closer than usual since the pro breaks from post-position 1. Blinkers go back on. That’s a 15% winning move for Peter Walder.
Millionaire Runner is 8/5 on the morning line. Those odds suggest that Runner takes off and wins by open lengths. That could happen. But at this level, closers can run into all sorts of trouble. Also, the chalk has 2 wins from 44 races. Not a great sign.
Win: Sensational Ride
Place: Big Boy Bruno
Show: Millionaire Runner
Race 6 – 3:43 pm ET – 7 Furlongs Dirt – $62,500 Allowance Optional Claiming
Sniper Shot will be odds-on. The Todd Pletcher trainee is 6/5 on the morning line Horse Racing Odds. That means 3/5, heck, 2/5 is a real possibility. But in races like the sixth at Gulf, it makes sense to find value in the exotics. Don’t try to beat a favorite that’s so obvious. Sometimes, it makes sense to just swallow the low odds, don’t make a win bet, and try to pad the exacta and trifecta.
We’ll pad the exacta with 20/1 on the morning line Glory Florida. Trainer Antonio Sano hasn’t had an awesome meet. He’s got 14 winners from 197 runners. Florida, though, could race well on Friday. The Dialed In sired colt had a nice third place finish in it’s last, a $50K claimer. That sets this one up well for the run on April 17.
Tiz Mischief hasn’t raced since last May. The work tab isn’t bad, though. Plus, this one breaks from the rail and produced its absolute best speed rating at this distance. The 12/1 morning line will add some value to the tri.
Win: Sniper Shot
Place: Dialed In
Show: Tiz Mischief
Race 9 – 5:17 pm ET – 6 Furlongs Dirt – $62,500 Allowance Optional Claiming
Saffie Joseph Jr. puts the saddle on Yodel E.A. Who, a 7/2 morning line choice sired by Creative Cause. Joseph wins 24% with horses racing off 46 to 90 days from the bench. Saffie wins 34% with beaten favorites in their next race and 26% with his sprinters. The top choice has a sweet 5-4-2 record from 16 starts.
Fortin Hill offers no value, but the 9/5 morning line choice should finish no worse than second. Trainer Chad Brown wins 30% with horses coming off a 90+ days layoff and ponies that he ships. This one broke it’s maiden and won it’s second race at Belmont. That was last June. Still, Fortin Hill has all the makings of a stakes runner for Brown.
21% winning trainer Marcial Navarro puts the saddle on Vinnie Van Go. The speedy 4-year-old gelded sone of J P’s Gusto has an awesome 6-4-2 record from 19 starts. But Van Go hasn’t raced since February and this field is much tougher than what Vinnie is used to.
