This season began a new era for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Future hall-of-fame quarterback Ben Roethlisberger had retired, and for the first time in many years, the Steelers would have a new starting quarterback under center. After signing Mitchell Trubisky to a free-agent deal, and drafting Kenny Pickett out of the University of Pittsburgh in the first round, the Steelers thought they had good options at the position.
Heading into Week 6, the quarterback position has been one of the many downfalls of the Steelers. After starting the first four games, Trubisky was replaced by Pickett. While Pickett played well early, he has looked like a rookie quarterback since. And now the Steelers rookie will have a very tough test coming up as the Steelers host Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Let’s preview both teams, and then we’ll give you our prediction so you can get ready to bet against their NFL Lines.
Are We Seeing the Start of a Rebuild for the Pittsburgh Steelers?
Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Even though Tom Brady is averaging just over 270 passing yards per game, it seems as though Father Time is starting to finally have his way with Brady. Tampa is 3-2 on the season, and the offense just hasn’t been in sync this season. The Buccaneers are only averaging 16.6 points per game. Injuries have taken their toll, and Leonard Fournette hasn’t run the ball effectively.
Tampa’s defense had a bad game against Kansas City, but other than that game, the defense has been very good. The Bucs are only allowing 16.6 points per game. Their pass defense is very good, as the secondary is only giving up 193 yards through the air per game.
Pittsburgh Steelers
We’ve already talked about the quarterback situation. This has caused a lot of issues for the offense. Teams have been able to load up the box to stop the run. Najee Harris has been mostly ineffective, and he hasn’t played nearly as well as he did last season. Wide receiver Chase Claypool has been non-existent, Pat Freiermuth hasn’t had good numbers, and Diontae Johnson hasn’t put up the numbers he put up last season.
Defensively, the Steelers haven’t been able to get to the quarterback. With some of their star players aging, and TJ Watt being out over the past few weeks, the Steelers defense has been an open gate for much of the season. We’ll see if Brady and company will be able to exploit the poor Steelers defense.
Prediction
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have been made a 7.5-point road favorite. First off, we don’t anticipate seeing a lot of offense in this one. In looking at some of the betting statistics, the numbers trend towards taking Tampa Bay. The Bucs are 5-1 against the spread in their last six road games. The six times these two teams have met, the road team is 5-1 against the spread.
Pittsburgh is 0-3-1 against the spread in its last four games.
While Tampa hasn’t been setting the league on fire, they’re still leading the NFC South with a 3-2 record. We like them in this one. We see them winning by a score of 24-14, covering the spread in the process.
