When Jeff Saturday was named the interim head coach of the Indianapolis Colts, it sent a shock through the NFL. Colts owner Jim Irsay was hoping that Saturday would be what the team needed. For one week it was, but over the last four, that hasn’t been the case. The Colts are on a four-game losing streak and are coming off of a game where they blew a 33-point lead. The Colts will now host one of the league’s hottest teams, the Los Angeles Chargers, on Monday night.
Let’s now take a look at each of the teams, and then we’ll give you our NFL Betting prediction for this week’s edition of Monday Night Football.
A Monday Night Date at Lucas Oil Stadium | Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Arizona
Los Angeles Chargers
If the season ended today, the Los Angeles Chargers would be the #6 seed in the AFC Playoffs. Now that Justin Herbert has Mike Williams and Keenan Allen healthy, the Chargers offense is starting to roll. Herbert has the ability and the personnel to make a long playoff run. With Austin Ekeler manning the backfield, this offense can put up points in bunches.
The Chargers defense has been getting healthy and playing better throughout their hot streak. If the defense continues to play well, this team has the potential to upset some of the top seeds in the AFC Playoffs.
Indianapolis Colts
What a dismal season it has been for the Colts. The team that was predicted to win the AFC South is now basically eliminated from playoff contention. And just when you thought things couldn’t get any worse for the Colts, it was announced earlier this week that running back Jonathan Taylor would miss the rest of the season with an ankle injury.
To further complicate matters, the Colts are now going to start their third quarterback of the season, as Nick Foles will get the start in place of Matt Ryan. All in all, between offensive line woes, poor quarterback play, and a lack of a strong running game, the Colts would like to forget this season ever happened.
Defensively, the Colts haven’t been as bad as they have been on offense. Even though they blew a large lead last week, the defense hasn’t been the issue in Indianapolis this season. We’ll see if they can slow down a tough Los Angeles offense, or if they’ll have another poor game like they had last week.
Prediction
The Los Angeles Chargers come into this one as a 3.5-point favorite. We’re surprised that the spread isn’t higher, as the Chargers have been playing well, while the Colts have hit the skids. Even though the Chargers struggled to put points on the board last week, we don’t think that will be an issue this week. The Chargers are obviously the better team and have a lot more riding on this game than the Colts do. We’re also not sold on Nick Foles being the answer in Indianapolis either.
We think the Chargers come into Indianapolis and beat the Colts by a score of 24-17, thus winning the game and covering the spread.
