My NASCAR Cup Series Analysis

This is a different challenge for all involved, and the nighttime aspect might prove to be something of a leveler when trying to predict how this all might play out.

The bookies do, of course, have an opinion on how they believe things might go on Saturday night, which means that it’s time to take a look at the current odds and maybe make a prediction or two, so let’s get to it.

Denny Hamlin +350

While this is definitely a different challenge, the night race has been around for several years, so most of the drivers here will have had some experience with this type of race.

Hamlin is considered the favorite due to the fact that he won this race last season, and that he has now won back-to-back races on the Bristol track.

That is certainly an impressive statistic, but winning 3 in a row on the same track is certainly a big ask.

That said, I do believe that he is up to the task and could well pull it off. If you are not so sure, then play him in the top 3.

Kyle Larson +600

When it comes to non-traditional races, such as on road tracks or dirt, Larson has proven himself to be one of the most versatile drivers in NASCAR.

He has 4 wins to his name this season, but he is on a bit of a dry spell at the moment, finishing inside the top 10 just once in his last 5 races.

Those poor runs of form never seem to last very long for Larson, and when you consider that he has been in the top 5 in his last 2 races on the Bristol track, playing him to land on the podium might not be a bad way to go.

Christopher Bell +600

When wagering on races in the postseason, you might consider looking at guys who have been proven playoff performers.

With back-to-back appearances in the Championship Round, I think it’s fair to put Bell into that category.

He has made a mediocre start to the playoffs this time around, but this is a race that could serve him well, as he has finished top 5 in the Night Race in each of the last 2 seasons. A top 3 wager might be a good way to go.

Ty Gibbs +700

Gibbs made it into the playoffs this season, but he is by no means guaranteed a spot in the Round of 12, so he really needs to put in a good run under the lights on Sunday night.

Given that he has barely cracked the top 20 just once in the last 3 races does not fill anyone with a ton of confidence, but if you can set that aside, this is a driver who has had some good runs at Bristol, including a top 5 finish on this race last year.

Top 5 might be the high bar again this season.

2023 Bass Pro Shops Night Race

As if the Cup Series playoffs weren’t dramatic enough, we have another cool little twist coming out way this weekend. The final race in the Round of 16 is a night race, which adds a whole new dimension to what we are used to seeing on the oval. There are going to be sone drivers who adapt to this style of racing than others, which could potentially play a role in deciding who makes the cut and who sees their season come to an end on Sunday night. There are a couple of drivers who can relax a little heading into this weekend’s action, with Kyle Larson and Tyler Reddick already sure of a spot in the next round after winning the previous 2 races. With that in mind, let’s take a look at the odds for the Bass Pro Shops Night Race.

Kyle Larson

Larson, the Cup Series champion in 2022, did not have to wait long to move on to the Round of 12, winning the opening race of the playoffs in Darlington. He has not taken his foot off the gas, though, finishing 4th in last weekend’s race. The bookies think he is a good bet to be in the hunt again this weekend, which is no real surprise when you look at how he has performed in this race over the past 2 seasons. He won this one in his championship winning season, and then finished in the top 5 again last year. He does look like the man to beat, especially in his current form.

Denny Hamlin

Hamling is once again in the hunt for the Cup Series Championship that has eluded him to this point in his career. He does always seem to be in the mix, which is very much the case again this season. Hamlin is sitting 3rd overall in the driver standings and will be moving on to the Round of 12, but he would love to get a win and get something going. He ran 2nd in last week’s race, and while he is always a decent pick, I do have some concerns in this one, as he has ran 9th in each of the last 2 night races in Bristol. Can he do better this weekend?

Brad Keselowski

This season has been something of a return to form for Keselowski after missing out on the playoffs in 2022. He ended up 24th overall last season, but as we head into this weekend, he is sitting in 5th in the driver standings and will more than likely be moving on. While it is good to see him back in the postseason, it is worth noting that he has yet to win a race this year and is one of only 2 drivers in the Round of 16 to be in that position. I don’t see anything that suggests he will win this weekend or even get near the podium.

Christopher Bell

Last year, which was his 3rd in the Cup Series, proved to be a breakout season for Bell, who made it all the way to the final four before having to settle for a 3rd place overall finish. He is somewhat on the fringe right now, though, as he is now down in 10th place overall, which puts him just above the cut line. Bell finished in the top 5 in this race last season and could use another run like that to secure his Round of 12 spot.
