Analyzing the NASCAR Odds & Top Contenders Challenging Hamlin for Enjoy Illinois 300 Glory

There are a lot of races crammed into the average NASCAR season, so it’s always fun when we get something a little different.

This weekend, the Cup Series drivers head to Illinois and the unique challenge provided by the Gateway track, which is an egg-shaped oval as opposed to what we are normally used to.

My Cup Series Analysis

This is a track that is still relatively new to the Cup Series calendar, with the inaugural race at Gateway coming in 2022. This makes the Enjoy Illinois 300 a little more difficult to predict given that we haven’t really seen enough races at Gateway to get a handle on which drivers might be best equipped to handle what the track has to offer. The bookies have their ideas, though, so let’s take a look at the current odds for the 2024 Enjoy Illinois 300.

Denny Hamlin NASCAR Betting Odds +500

Hamlin is in fantastic form at the moment, finishing in the top 5 in each of his last 4 races, which included a win in Dover a few weeks back. Overall, he already has 3 wins this season, which is good enough to have him sitting atop the driver standings heading into this weekend’s race. His first appearance on the Gateway track was instantly forgettable, as he failed to even crack the top 30, but he more than made up for that last season by finishing 2nd in this race. Given that performance and his current form, it’s easy to see why he is the favorite on Sunday.

Kyle Larson NASCAR Betting Odds +650

Larson headed into last weekend on top of the driver standings, but he lost that spot, partially because he did not take part in Charlotte. Larson was scheduled to race in the Cup Series and in the Indianapolis 500, but when the weather intervened, he chose to run in the latter race and skip NASCAR. He is back this weekend and looking to get back on top after a week away. His form has been solid this season, and he did perform well in this race last year finishing 4th overall, making a top 5 finish seem like a good bet.

William Byron NASCAR Betting Odds +800

Byron is doing a solid job of hanging around the top of the driver standings, where he is currently sitting in 5th. He was on fire in the early part of the season, winning 3 races, and while he is now on a 6-race winless streak, which included a couple of disappointing runs, he is coming off a podium finish in Charlotte last weekend. In terms of this race, Byron had a top 10 finish at Gateway last season, while failing to crack the top 10 a year prior. I think a top 10 finish seems the best way to go this weekend.

Martin Truex Jr. NASCAR Betting Odds +800

Truex Jr. comes into this weekend still looking for his first win of the season, and you have to say that he is a little off his game right now, with just 5 top 10 finishes to this point in the season. That said, he has amassed enough points to be sitting 2nd overall, thanks in large part to the number of laps that he has led this season. While I’m not sure about playing him to win this weekend, it is worth noting that he has finished no worse than 6th in each of his 2 runs on the Gateway track.

2023 Enjoy Illinois 300

Over the course of a Cup Series season, we expect every driver to have some ups and downs. Last weekend, Ryan Blaney snapped out of a huge winless streak to take the checkered flag in Charlotte. As he is on the rise, we are seeing Chase Elliott have another setback to his season. After missing 6 weeks through an injury sustained off the track, he will miss another race this week due to suspension. The chances of him doing enough to get into the playoffs do not look good, as missing 7 races and hoping to make the top 16 seems like a longshot. The rest of the drivers will be in St. Louis this Sunday for the Enjoy Illinois 300, so let’s take a look at the current NASCAR odds.

Kyle Larson

Betting Pick: +490

Speaking of ups and downs, it has been a bit of a strange ride for Larson this season. He has had a difficult time staying consistent and is looking to snap out of a funk that has seen him put in poor showings in the last 2 races. This, though, is a driver that you simply cannot count out, as he has also delivered a pair of wins this year. That is not enough to have him in the top 10 in the driver standings, though, as he is currently sitting down in 11th overall. He failed to crack the top 10 on this track in 2022, but the bookies seem to think he can deliver the goods this weekend. I’m not sure.

William Byron

Betting Pick: +670

If you are looking for a driver in great form to wager on this weekend, look no further than William Byron. He has already won 3 races this season, with 2 of those coming in the early part of the year, but he is now on a run of finishing in the top 10 in 7 straight races, which includes one of his wins. The question now is whether he can keep that going this weekend, which is not a given when you consider that he finished 19th in this race in 2022. Still, given his current form, taking him for a top 5 finish might not be bad idea.

Kyle Busch

Betting Pick: +900

Busch, much like Larson, is another driver who has been difficult to predict this season, but also like Larson, he is a driver you can never count out in any given week. Busch is sitting down in 10th overall, but there are some signs that he is getting back into form, as he has finished in the top 10 in each of the last 2 races. He has also won a pair of races this season, so it’s not like he has been terrible by any stretch of the imagination. He ran 2nd on the Gateway track last season, so I do like him at these odds.

Martin Truex Jr.

Betting Pick: +1025

After finishing 17th overall last season, it looked as though Father Time had finally caught up with Truex Jr. He did get the season off to a slow start, but he has been solid over the last few races, picking up a win along the way. He had a podium finish in Charlotte last weekend, and when you consider that he finished 6th at Gateway last season in the midst of a disappointing season, he could well be in the hunt this weekend.
