Team Spirit vs Heroic
Heroic reached the IEM Rio Major playoffs with a very impressive run through the Legends Stage, in which the Danish CS:GO squad finished with just one loss (3-1) and three wins against Outsiders, Fnatic, and Team Liquid.
On the other side, Team Spirit finished the Legends Stage with a 3-2 record, with defeats against Cloud9 and Team Liquid and won against Bad News Eagles, Sprout, and Team Liquid.
Notably, Spirit faced elimination three rounds in after they managed just one W from their opening three bouts. But the CIS squad found momentum in the final two rounds, for which they deserve praise.
Still, it’s important to note that Spirt haven’t beaten any notable opponents besides Team Liquid, and their defeats against FURIA and Outsiders only confirm that Spirit might not be ready to face a squad like Heroic.
Heroic are known to underperform in LAN playoffs, as they’ve fallen apart in the tournament’s finals stages numerous times before. But this time, Heroic field a different roster, which gives us hope that they can make it past Spirit with relative ease.
Quality-wise, Heroic are far above Spirit, and we expect that to show on Friday. There’s a chance Spirit take one map, but this is Heroic’s game to lose.
Prediction: Heroic -1.5 maps
Natus Vincere vs FURIA Esports
The current IEM Rio Major tournament favorite, Natus Vincere, nearly missed the playoffs. After a strong start to the tournament, beating Team Vitality, Natus Vincere lost back-to-back series against Cloud9 and Team Liquid, which put them in a do-or-die situation.
But despite their slip-up, NaVi found traction in the final two rounds, where they bested Bad News Eagles and BIG to lock in a spot in the playoffs. NaVi looked much better in their last two outings, but that doesn’t take away from the fact that they have lost against Liquid and Cloud9, which is concerning.
Admittedly, Natus Vincere tend to ramp up as the tournament progresses, so we shouldn’t underestimate them ahead of this match. But we also shouldn’t ignore FURIA.
The home crowd’s favorites have yet to disappoint in this tournament. FURIA Esports started their IEM Rio Major campaign in the Challengers Stage, which they finished with a 3-1 record, and then they completed the Legends Stage without dropping a game.
That translates to six consecutive wins against 00Nation, OG, GamerLegion, ENCE, Team Spirit, and BIG. Although FURIA didn’t need to face any tough opponents over that stretch, they are playing great CS and should be able to put up a fight against NaVi.
Even though we have high expectations for FURIA, it will take a lot to defeat Natus Vincere. Still, FURIA should be able to force a close series and likely steal at least one map.
Prediction: Over 2.5 maps
