G2 Esports vs Movistar Riders
G2 Esports and Movistar Riders will clash in the first round of IEM Cologne in what promises to be an exciting affair. Movistar enter this match following a solid run through the Play-Ins, where they eliminated MiBR (16-13) and swept Team Vitality (2-0) with 16-13 and 16-4.
G2 Esports, on the other side, received a direct invite to the main stage and have not played a single official match since BLAST Premier: Spring Finals 2022 in June. So even though G2 are clearly stronger than Movistar Riders, they are also a bit ring rusty, which could be a problem for the Berlin residents.
G2 and Movistar Riders last met in May, when G2 defeated the Spanish squad 16-5 at IEM Dallas. However, they lost their previous meeting in October 2021 (1-2) during IEM Fall 2021 Europe. Obviously, the most recent result holds more weight, but that doesn’t change the fact that Movistar Riders can defeat G2.
The Spanish squad are on a six-game winning streak, which includes wins against Spirit and Vitality, so clearly, they’re no slouches. Movistar Riders are live underdogs and can cause some damage to G2. We wouldn’t be surprised if they win, but we can be certain that Movistar Riders have at least one map in them.
Prediction: Movistar Riders +1.5 maps
Team Vitality vs ENCE
Team Vitality got off to a strong start to IEM Cologne, demolishing TYLOO 16-9, but they stumbled at the next obstacle when they lost against Movistar Riders. Luckily, due to the double-elimination format, Vitality were able to qualify for the main stage with a not-so-convincing win against Sprout (2-1).
Due to their poor showings, it’s hard to imagine Vitality will make it far in this tournament. But at the same time, it’s not like ENCE are in a much better spot. ENCE are 2-3 across their last five outings and were last seen playing at the end of June when they crashed out of Roobet Cup. In the tournament, ENCE defeated only Eternal Fire and MOUZ (2-1) but were no match for FaZe (0-2).
But the most important result across their last 10 is a 0-2 defeat against Vitality at BLAST Premier: Spring Finals 2022 mid-June. It’s been almost a month since, so we wouldn’t overreact to that result, but it makes you wonder whether ENCE deserves to be the favorites for this match – especially since they’re 1-1 in the H2H on the year.
Perhaps they do, considering how poorly Vitality have been playing, but no matter how you look at this match, it’s hard to call out a winner. ENCE look better only because Vitality hasn’t looked too sharp so far, but that’s not enough to bet on them. We expect a scrappy and closely-fought series, so we’re on over 2.5 maps!
Prediction: Over 2.5 maps
