SK Gaming vs Astralis
SK Gaming enter this match with a 4-7 record, which sits them in second-to-last place in the LEC 2022 Summer standings. Although things could be much better for SK, they could also be significantly worse.
The current split is possibly one of the most competitive we’ve seen in years, seeing how a three-way tie for sixth place between Fnatic, Astralis, and Misfits Gaming, and a two-way tie for fourth between G2 and Vitality.
Interestingly, SK are just one win short of breaking into the top-six and two wins from catching up to G2 Esports and Vitality.
Although their situation is not as bad as it seems, SK desperately need to win this match if they’re serious about reaching the playoffs. The betting odds suggest that isn’t likely to happen, but we would argue that SK have a realistic chance of beating Astralis.
That’s not necessarily because SK are good, but mainly because we don’t believe Astralis are that much stronger. Admittedly, Astralis won against Excel during Week 4, but they’re 2-4 across their last six outings, with their only other win coming against Team BDS. On the other side, SK also defeated Team BDS and Excel over the last three weeks, but they’ve also beaten G2 on June 15.
Talent-wise, SK Gaming and Astralis are evenly matched, and there is nothing from their recent showings that would suggest one team is better than the other. With that in mind, we will side with SK Gaming at plus money.
Prediction: SK Gaming to win
Team Vitality vs Excel Esports
Team Vitality have yet to find their footing, and based on what we’ve seen from this “superteam,” it’s unlikely for Vitality to compete for the LEC crown. Last week, they lost against MAD Lions and defeated Misfits Gaming, which is nothing to write home about, and they were just as convincing a week prior when they lost against Rogue and defeated the shaky Fnatic.
Excel Esports enter this match following a 2-0 week, with wins against Misfits Gaming and Astralis. But they dropped both of their Week 4 games when Excel lost against Astralis and SK Gaming. As seen, consistency isn’t Excel’s strong suit, albeit they have looked good in their wins.
This is a match between two similarly matched teams, and we can’t call out a definitive winner. Vitality have the potential to be great, but we’ve yet to see that side of them. Meanwhile, Excel have produced far better games this split, but they also had their fair share of slip-ups.
As hard as it is to bet against Excel after seeing how good they can be when they are “feeling it,” we will give Vitality the benefit of the doubt and take their side in this contest. They might struggle with synergy and can be a bit disappointing, but Vitality have been improving, and that’s enough for us.
Prediction: Team Vitality to win
