Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri: Top Contenders for Azerbaijan Grand Prix Victory

Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri: Top Contenders for Azerbaijan Grand Prix Victory

Through the opening 10 races of the 2024 F1 season, it looked as though things were going to go just as they had in the previous couple of years.

Max Verstappen was racking up wins again, and the thought of another driver suddenly turning that all around seemed ridiculous.

Today’s F1 Top Favorites
1. Lando Norris | 241 points
2. Oscar Piastri | 197 points

My 2024 Azerbaijan Grand Prix Analysis

That idea suddenly doesn’t seem as bizarre, with Verstappen and Red Bull Racing struggling over the past few months.

The lead at the top is still big, but we now have to wonder whether they can turn things around and get a competitive car out on the track, or if the champ is going to be clinging to that lead for dear life for the remainder of the season.

We will get an idea of how it all might go when the next race on the F1 calendar, the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, goes off this Sunday.

Let’s take a look at the current odds for this race.

Lando Norris +124

There are 8 races remaining in the F1 season, and Norris has to find a way to close down a gap of 62 points at the top of the driver standings.

The fastest way to do that is to win races, and while Norris has picked up a couple of checkered flags this season, he needs to win more consistently if he is to remove Verstappen from the throne.

He does also have a bunch of podium finishes this season, and as long as he can continue to finish ahead of Verstappen, the more he will cut into that lead.

His best finish in this race is 5th, but I think we can expect Norris to finish in the top 3 this weekend.

Oscar Piastri +480

If you are looking for consistency without many wins, then Piastri is the man to look at this weekend.

He picked up his first career win in F1 in Hungary earlier this season, but more often than not, he is forced to settle for the lesser prizes, which does still mean that he is on the podium on a regular basis.

If you are considering Piastri for a top 3 finish, now might well be the time to strike when you consider that he has been on the podium 4 times in the last 6 races.

He finished outside the top 10 in Azerbaijan last season, but when you consider that it was his first year in F1, I think we can expect much better this time around.

Other Drivers to Consider

It was a big weekend for Charles Leclerc (+500) in Italy in the previous race, as he picked up his 2nd win of the season.

Leclerc is now sitting in 3rd overall in the driver standings, but he is far enough off the pace as to not really be a factor in the World Championship hunt, at least at the moment.

He finished on the podium in this race last season, so why not again this time around? Finally, it is more than a little odd to see Max Verstappen (+690) not in as the favorite for a race, but the issues with his car right now make it hard to wager on him to win.

If you think he can snap out of this funk, you probably won’t find better odds than are available right now.

2023 Azerbaijan Grand Prix

Three rounds of the new Formula 1 season are in the books, and it already looks as though we are about to see a rather similar story unfold. Two-time defending champion Max Verstappen is out to a fast start, winning 2 of the opening 3 races and landing on the podium in the other. Right now, it looks as though his Red Bull Racing teammate, Sergio Perez, might well be the only driver ready to tackle the champ and give him a run for his money, but as we all know, this is a long season, and one that simply isn’t won after just 3 races. Still, it would be nice to see a good battle for the World Championship emerge, but will things get tighter after this weekends race in Azerbaijan? Let’s take a look at the Formula 1 betting analysis and our current favorites.

Formula 1 Picks and Analysis: Azerbaijan Grand Prix 2023 | F1 Odds

When: Sunday, April 30 at 6:55 am ET
Where: Bakú, Azerbaijan
TV / Streaming: ESPN

Max Verstappen

Like we said at the top of this piece, it already looks as though Verstappen is unwilling to loosen his dominant grip on F1, as he has already won 2 races this season and landed on the podium in the other. If he is to win again this weekend, he is going to need to do it coming from behind, as he did not land that pole position in Azerbaijan. That went to Charles Leclerc in what was a bit of a surprise. He does have history on his side, though, as he comes into this race knowing that he won it last year. The odds of him repeating seem pretty good.

Sergio Perez

After more than a decade of dominance from Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes, it looks like Red Bull Racing are ready to take over. Having Max Verstappen certainly helps their cause, but bringing Sergio Perez into the fold has also proven to be a stroke of genius. In fact, with Perez winning the one race that Verstappen missed out on this season Red Bull has a clean sweep through the opening 3 races. They look to be just that much better than the other constructors this season, so are we looking at a 2-horse race? He ran 2nd to Verstappen in Azerbaijan last season.

Fernando Alonso

While getting on the podium is great, unless you are consistently standing on the #1 spot, chances are you are not going to win a world championship. Alonso has been on the podium in every race this season, finishing 3rd in all 3. It is ridiculously consistent, even in the early going, but it also means that he is still 24 points back of Verstappen at the top. Given that the champ rarely leaves points on the track, making that up without winning is going to be tough. He has failed to crack the top 5 in his last 3 races in Azerbaijan, but that might change this weekend.

Lewis Hamilton

It wasn’t a win, but getting onto the podium for the first time this season is a step in the right direction. Hamilton finished 5th in each of the first 2 races of the season before grabbing 2nd in Australia in the last race, all of which has him sitting down in 4th in the driver standings. At this point, you do have to wonder how much he and Mercedes have left in the tank, but I think it might still be worth taking a chance on Hamilton to land on the podium again this weekend.
