2023 French Open: Singles Second-Round: May 31, 2023

Auger-Aliassime and Evans Out in the Men’s Draw | Major Upset in Early Action

Admittedly, Felix Auger-Aliassime would have been one of my sleeper picks for the 2023 French Open.

Although he hasn’t been able to follow up a breakout 2022 campaign with much success in 2023, Roland Garros presented an opportunity for him to reclaim his game at a venue where he has proven himself as an elite player – Auger-Aliassime became just the second player in history to take Rafael Nadal to five sets in last year’s French Open.

However, Italian Fabio Fogini beat the 22-year-old Canadian in straight sets 6-4, 6-4, 6-3. Auger-Aliassime had just three aces and eight double faults. He only saved one of nine breakpoints. He later said he was dealing with stomach issues during the match.

Thanasi Kokkinakis, Nick Kyrgios’ doubles partner, scored an upset victory over 20-seed Dan Evans. Kokkinakis won the match 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 on the strength of 10 aces and 5-of-13 breakpoints.

Reigning Olympic Champion Out in the Women’s Draw | Major Upset in Early Action

Belinda Bencic, an eight-time winner on the WTA Tour and reigning Olympic champion, is the most notable name out of the women’s draw in the first round. Elina Avanesyan beat Bencic 6-3, 2-6, 6-4. Bencic made seven double faults and won just 59 percent of points on first serve.

Bencic’s early loss isn’t all that surprising, however. She hadn’t played since April 9 in the final of the Charleston Open and had been dealing with a hip injury that caused her to miss WTA 1000 events in Madrid and Rome.

Ugo Humbert vs. Lorenzo Sonego

French Open Odds: Ugo Humbert (-101) vs. Lorenzo Sonego (-136)

Ugo Humbert beat fellow French player Adrian Mannarino in straight sets 6-3, 6-3, 6-1 in the first round on Sunday, while Lorenzo Sonego is coming off of an upset win over American Ben Shelton 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3.

Humbert won the first meeting between the two players in 2021, and Sonego evened the score at the Monte-Carlos Masters earlier this season. Umbert was much more dominant in his first-round victory, however, and should be more rested with the benefit of the crowd support.

Varvara Gracheva vs. Sloane Stephens | Second Round

French Open Odds: Varvara Gracheva (+121) vs. Sloane Stephens (-168)

The second-round match between Varvara Gracheva and Sloane Stephens presents a good opportunity for some value betting. Gracheva at +121 is a solid bet as she has a 2-1 record against Stephens and beat the 30-year-old American in straight sets at the ATX Open in Austin, Texas, earlier this year.

Gracheva is 28-16 this season and has youth on her side at just 22 years old. Stephens, meanwhile, is a shell of the player who won the US Open in 2017.

Alexander Zverev vs Sebastian Baez

The third seed, Alexander Zverev, will face off against the current world no.36 Sebastian Baez in the second round of the 2022 French Open in what promises to be a very one-sided affair. And there are many reasons to believe that will be the case.

Zverev kicked off his quest for the French Open title with a commanding win against Sebastian Ofner, who he beat 6-2, 6-4, 6-4 on Sunday. Admittedly, the second set was a bit more competitive, but it never seemed like Zverev wasn’t in full control of the match.

On the other side, we have Sebastian Baez, who is making his debut at the French Open, and he has yet to disappoint. In the first round, the young tennis player was paired with the experienced Dusan Lajovic and came out on top with a superb display of skill.

After taking the first set 6-3, Sebastian Baez slipped in the second (3-6) before rounding up the game with 6-4 and 6-3. Even more impressive was his comeback in the third set, when Baez fell behind 1-3 but turned things around.

Zverev met with Baez just once before, won the match easily, and heads into this match 1-0 up in the H2H. And even though Sebastian Baez has shown an incredible fight in R1, there is little to suggest he will manage to upset Zverev.

Until we see Zverev start to struggle, he is a sure bet against lower-rated opponents, and unless he shoots himself in the foot, Zverev should come out ahead in straight sets.

Prediction: Alexander Zverev to win in straight sets

Cameron Norrie vs Jason Kubler

World no.10 Cameron Norrie will clash with the unseeded Jason Kubler on Wednesday in the second round of the 2022 French Open. Norrie enters the match as the clear favorite and is, in the eyes of many, the dark horse to go all the way and lift the trophy.

Whether he will actually do it is anyone’s guess, but Norris is undeniably a class above Kubler, who really hasn’t had a chance to prove his worth at the top level yet. Admittedly, he played well in R1, where he defeated Kudla, but he only barely made it past the American player with 7-6, 7-6, 7-6.

On the other side, Norrie eased past Guinard, who had shown some resistance but wasn’t a match for the Brit, who came out ahead with 7-6, 6-2, 6-2. With that win, Norrie continued his solid form, which he has seemingly found at the Delray Beach Open, which he won by beating Reilly Opelka.

He followed that up with a strong showing in Mexico, where he lost against Nadal in the finals. Admittedly, Norrie didn’t impress in Monte Carlo, Madrid, and Rome, where he didn’t make it past R32, but he made QF in Barcelona and won the title in Lyon.

Norrie is an overwhelming favorite for this match, and there is no reason to doubt his chances of coming out on top. He has been showing excellent form and should fancy his chances to defeat Kubler, which he should, but we would argue that Kubler has enough talent in him to show some resistance.

Kubler is a very aggressive player, which could catch Norrie off guard and see him drop a set. But we wouldn’t count on Kubler to achieve much more than that.

Prediction: Cameron Norrie to win 3-1

2022 French Open Picks for Day 3 | ATP Betting

Aljaz Bedene vs Pablo Cuevas

Aljaz Bedene and Pablo Cuevas will clash on Wednesday in what promises to be a fairly one-sided affair. Cuevas, ranked no. 149 in the world, has made it to the second round with a phenomenal performance against Brooksby, who he beat in straight sets (3-0), while Bedene took down O’Collen 3-1 to book a ticket for the second round.

Even though Cuevas has looked better in his opening match of the French Open, Bedene has a solid chance to take down the world no.149 on Wednesday. The two tennis players met twice before, in 2018 and 2019, with both games ending in favor of Cuevas (3-0, 2-0).

Moreover, both matches happened on clay, so it’s fair to favor the Peruvian tennis player for this match. Still, Bedene has been showing improvements of late and has achieved solid results on clay in 2022. 

Admittedly, he has yet to win a tournament title, and he like won’t make it all the way in France, but the Slovenian tennis player has the tools to deal with Cuevas. This seems like a 50/50 match, so we have to side with Bedene at outsider odds. 

Prediction: Aljaz Bedene to win

Grigor Dimitrov vs Borna Coric

World no. 21 Grigor Dimitrov will lock horns with the current world no.279 Borna Coric in the 1/32-finals of the 2022 French Open for the first time since June 2020. The two have met three times over their careers, and currently, Dimitrov leads in the head-to-head with 2-1.

He won his first clash with Coric in 2015 with 2-0 and added another victory in January 2020 (2-1). However, Coric won the last meeting in June 2020 when he won in straight sets (2-0).

Admittedly, the result from two years ago doesn’t mean much, and it doesn’t indicate that Coric can win again. There is a good reason why he is priced as a +300 underdog, and we don’t see a problem with that.

Moreover, Dimitrov is 3-2 over his last five clay-court matches, and since both defeats came against Tsitsipas (0-2, 1-2), we wouldn’t criticize him too much for that.

It’s also important to note that Dimitrov won against Schwartzman (2-0) in Madrid and has picked up two easy wins against Nakashima (2-0) and Giron (3-0), who he beat in the first round of the French Open.

On the other side, Coric is 1-4 across his last five outings. That run includes defeats against Sinners (1-2), Cobolli (1-2), Lajovic (1-2), and Djere (1-2). His only win came against Taberner (3-1) in the first round of the French Open.

Coric’s chances to win are very slim, but he has shown some glimpses of greatness before, and considering Dimitrov has dropped sets against weaker opponents before, it’s fair to expect Coric to win at least one on Wednesday.

We don’t expect Coric to upset Dimitrov, but he should be able to keep it close and put up a strong fight.

Prediction: Borna Coric to win a set

Maria Sakkari Takes Down 4th Seeded Sofia Kenin!

Another day, another upset. Well, you could argue that Maria Sakkari’s win over Sofia Kenin isn’t that big of an upset considering how well the 25-year-old has been playing. Regardless, it is a memorable moment of the 2021 French Open.

Sakkari beat fourth-seeded Kenin 2-0 with 6-1, 6-3 to secure her spot in the French Open quarter-finals, thus guaranteed herself her career-best placement in a Grand Slam tournament. In her last four trips to the French Open, Sakkari has never managed to get past R3 (2018, 2020), while she has never made it through R4 in any of her 20 Grand Slam appearances.

Kenin, on the other side, can’t be too happy with her 1/8 finals exit from the 2021 French Open, considering she reached the finals in 2020 after she has won the 2020 Australian Open. In 2021, however, Kenin hasn’t been playing as well, failing to make it through R2 in Australia earlier in the year.

Sakkari will now face world no.9 Iga Swiatek on Wednesday, June 8, for a spot in the semi-finals. It will mark her first meeting with the 20-year-old Pole and one she will be eager to win and get herself one step closer to her first Grand Slam title.

Zidanšek is Through to The Semi-Finals

Tamara Zidanšek’s unbeaten run at the French Open continues into the semi-finals, after a narrow yet convincing 2-1 victory against world no.35 Paula Badosa Gibert. Zidanšek beat the heavy favorite in just south of 2.5 hours, with 7-5, 4-6, 8-6, to secure her career-first Grand Slam semi-finals appearance.

The Slovenian tennis player entered the 2021 French Open as one of the biggest underdogs, but she quickly earned a lot of attention from the tennis world. Even reaching this stage of the competition was a massive success for the 23-year-old; however, she is now just two steps away from becoming the first female Slovenian to win the French Open since Mima Jaušovec in 1977.

Whether Zidanšek can reach the impossible is anyone’s guess, but it’s hard to doubt her ability after what is one of the most exciting underdog stories at the French Open.

Novak Djoković Needed Five Sets against Lorenzo Musetti

Novak Djoković faced elimination from the 2021 French Open in the 1/8 finals when he clashed with the world no.76 Lorenzo Musetti. The two went at it for five sets before the Italian forfeited the match and handed the Serbian tennis star a free pass into the next stage.

Musetti started that match strongly and claimed a commanding 2-0 lead with 7-6, 7-6. It wasn’t until the reigning Australian Open champion was trailing by two sets that he started to show some resistance and picked up two easy sets with 6-1, 6-0 to tie the match at 2-2.

Djoković did not show any signs of stopping in the final set and quickly gained a 4-0 lead, at which point Musetti decided to forfeit the game.

Despite the disappointing loss, the 19-year-old Italian can be proud of what he has shown in France. The youngster has reached 1/8 finals at one of the biggest tennis tournaments on the calendar, which is a massive improvement compared to two failed qualifying runs at the Australian Open.

For Djoković, it was another day at the office, as he now advances to the French Open quarter-finals for the 14th time in his career. He failed to reach this stage of the competition on French clay only twice in his career, including his debut in 2005 and later in 2009.

That was also Djoković’s last Grand Slam tournament, where he failed to reach the final eight.

Gilles Simon beat Sergiy Stakhovsky 6-3, 6-3, 6-4 in Round 1. Before the French Open, Simon had made it to the second round at the Internazionali BNL dItalia in Men’s Doubles. Outside of his double play, Gilles hasn’t played all that well. He lost in the first round at the Internazionali BNL dItalia. He lost in Round 1 at the Mutua Madrid Open.

Caruso fought hard to beat Jaume Munar in his first match at Roland-Garros. Before the French Open, Caruso got bounced in the first round at the Millenium Estoril Open. The Millenium Estoril isn’t on the same level as the Internazionali BNL dItalia or /news/tennis/mutua-madrid-open-picks-atp-odds/. That means Simon has played in and has had some success, albeit with a doubles partner, in tougher tournaments. That gives the favorite the edge in this matchup.

Fognini deserves to be favored over Delbonis. In his last tournament played, the Internazionali BNL dItalia, Fognini beat Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 6-3, 6-4 and Radu Albot 7-8 (8-6), 6-3 before losing 4-6, 3-6 to Stefanos Tsitsipas in the Internazionali BNL dItalia.

Although Fognini should be favored, he could run into trouble against Federico Delbonis. Delbonis beat Grigor Dimitrov, Marton Fucsovics, and Albert-Ramos Vinolas in his last tournament played, the Banque Eric Sturdza Geneva Open. Delbonis lost to Alexander Zverev, the tournament’s 1-seed, in the semifinals.

Federico looked good beating Guillermo Garcia-Lopez in Round 1 at Roland-Garros. He’s got a shot to get the upset win over Fabio Fognini.

Many tennis handicappers, me included, thought Venus Williams would challenge Elina Svitolina in Round 1. Svitolina easily disposed of Venus in two sets, 6-3, 6-3. Although Svitolina looked great beating Williams, she actually faces a slightly tougher task beating Kateryna Kozlova in the second round.

Kozlova sent Bernarda Para home 6-2, 7-6 (6-5) in the first round. Para is 20-13 in singles play this year. Not only that, but in the Mutua Madrid Open she beat a couple of name tennis players. In Round 1, she beat Shuai Zhang 6-3, 6-2. In Round 2, she beat Karolina Pliskova 7-5, 2-6, 6-4. Kozlova is playing well enough to pull off the upset. At the odds, she’s worth backing.

Mladenovic offers underdog odds. She should probably be favored. In the first round at Roland-Garros, Mladenovic took down Fiona Ferro. Although she played well to beat Ferro, that’s not the real reason to like her against Martic.

The real reason to consider Maldenovic is because in the Internazionali BNL dItalia, she made it all the way to the quarterfinals. She beat Caroline Garcia, Belinda Bencic, and Ashleigh Barty. Maria Sakkari knocked Mladenovic out in the quarters, but the run was impressive. She should handle Martic on Thursday.
