ATP The Favorites

This is a tournament that really only has three contenders: Alcaraz, Djokovic, and Nadal. It’s hard to argue anyone else has a realistic chance when Stan Wawrinka is the only other player outside of Nadal or Djokovic to win the tournament since 2010. Alcaraz, meanwhile, is about to reclaim the world No. 1 ranking and has been just as dominant as Nadal on clay.

Alcaraz is playing his Round of 32 match today in the Italian Open and is coming off of tournament victories in the Madrid Open and Barcelona Open. It feels like the French Open could be a shifting of the guard, with Alcaraz making a statement for the new generation of players on the ATP Tour.

ATP Longshot Pick

It’s hard to see a real longshot having a chance in Paris, but Alexander Zverev isn’t a terrible betting option. The talented German lost to Alcaraz in the Round of 16 at the Madrid Open but could have some added motivation as he returns to the site where he suffered an injury that kept him out for several months. Zverev was forced to withdraw from last year’s semifinal match against Nadal.

WTA The Favorites

Again, it’s hard to imagine a world in which the betting favorite – Swiatek – doesn’t win this tournament, but tennis can be unpredictable at times. Swiatek, a three-time Grand Slam champion is 25-5 this season with two tournament victories. She’s 11-1 on clay this season.

Aryna Sabalenka gave Swiatek her lone loss on clay in the finals of the Madrid Open. It’s a huge confidence boost for the Belarusian player, but she followed that up with a disappointing first round loss in the Italian Open.

WTA Longshot Pick

There’s a lot to like with Americans Coco Gauff (+1525) and Jessica Pegula (+1800). Gauff has seemingly been on the cusp of Grand Slam greatness for a few years now and is still only 19 years old. Her record on clay leaves a lot to be desired, however. Pegula, Gauff’s doubles partner, was a quarter-finalist at the Madrid Open and semi-finalist in the Charleston Open the week prior – she’ll be in contention in Paris.

Say Her Name

19-year-old Iga Swiatek made her name known on the WTA Tour by winning the 2020 French Open, but since then, she’s proven herself to be a legitimate star and top contender no matter the venue. Swiatek never lost a set last year and beat the pants off world No. 15 seed Marketa Vondrousova, the aforementioned Halep and fourth-seeded Sofia Kenin in the finals.

Simona Halep is 11-4 on the year and reached the quarterfinals in Australia. Halep is 31-10 at Roland Garros (76%) and has reached at least the fourth round in five straight French Open appearances.

World No. 1 Ashleigh Barty has gone a stellar 25-4 this season. The Australian reached the finals in Madrid before losing to Aryna Sabalenka, but beat Sabalenka in the finals of the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Germany a week earlier. Barty claimed a title in Miami and another in Melbourne prior to the Australian Open this year.

Analysis: Sorry Serena, and move over Naomi. Out of this group of players, I love the value that rising world No. 4 Aryna Sabalenka is offering as a +800 pick. The 23-year-old Belarus native is 24-6 on the year with two titles in Abu Dhabi in January and Madrid just over a week ago. Sabalenka has played Barty in three consecutive tournaments and two straight finals on clay, including her win in Madrid.

Analysis: I’m done believing Karolina Pliskova can win a grand slam and my patience is wearing thin with Elina Svitolina. Victoria Azarenka and Petra Kvitova are both better on a faster surface where they can use their power. 2020 Aussie Open champ and World No. 5 Sofia Kenin reached the finals here a year ago.

Long Shot Hopefuls

Analysis: Elise Mertens just doesn’t have the firepower necessary to win seven straight matches. Coco Gauff is a future star, but her time has not quite yet arrived. 2017 French Open winner Jelena Ostapenko has been mediocre at best since claiming her only slam four years ago. World No. 19 Maria Sakkari looks dangerous to me. The 25-year-old is 15-8 on the year and reached the semifinals in Miami and Abu Dhabi.

The Favorites

Analysis: Nadal is 13-3 this season with one title in Barcelona last month. Shortly after, Nadal was beaten by Alexander Zverev in the quarterfinals in Madrid. Prior to Barcelona, Nadal lost to Andrey Rublev in the quarterfinals at Monte Carlo. Just before the start pf the clay court season Nadal was knocked out of the Australian Open in five sets by Stefanos Tsitsipas.

Still, Nadal is 100-2 at Roland Garros and simply won’t be easily beaten, if at all.

Novak Djokovic is 12-2 this season and won the 2021 Australian Open in January. Djokovic was beaten in Monte Carlo by Englishman Daniel Evans and lost in Belgrade against Russian Aslan Karatsev. The Serbian is 74-15 at Roland Garros all-time. Djokovic lost against Nadal in straight sets in last year’s French Open finals.

Dominic Thiem came up short against Nadal in the French Open finals in consecutive years (2018, 2019) and lost in last year’s quarterfinals. Thiem enters Roland Garros with an uninspiring 8-5 mark, but did manage to reach the semifinals in Madrid. Blossoming Greek star Stefanos Tsitsipas is 27-7 on the year with one title at Monte Carlo. Right after that, the 22-year-old reached the finals Nadal in Barcelona before falling in three sets. Tsitsipas also reached the semifinals in Australia and Rotterdam.

Too Legit To Quit

Analysis: German Alexander Zverev is 16-7 this season. The world No. 7, Zverev won his second career Masters 100 in Madrid by taking down Nadal in straight sets in the quarterfinals. The still-blossoming 24-year-old has won three consecutive matches against Nadal.

Rising Russian Andrey Rublev is 27-7 this season with one title in Rotterdam. The 23-year-old also reached the finals in Monte Carlo and the semis in Miami and Dubai. Russian, Daniil Medvedev is 18-4 this year with one title in Marseille. The often petulant big man has four first round exits in four career French Open appearances. The legendary Roger Federer will make his first appearance at Roland Garros since reaching the semis in 2019. Federer claimed the 2009 French Open after Robin Soderling stunned Nadal in the semis that year. Fed also has four appearances in the finals.

Late-blooming Russian Aslan Karatsev is 19-6 on the year with one title in Dubai. In what has been a massive breakout campaign, the 27-year-old has recorded wins this year over highly ranked counterparts like Djokovic, Rublev, Jannik Sinner and Diego Schwartzman among others.

A Puncher’s Chance

Analysis: The 25-year-old Italian Matteo Berrettini is 16-4 on the year and beat Karatsev in the finals with a title at Belgrade where he beat Karatsev in the final. Roberto Bautista-Agut and Pablo Carreno Busta could pull off more than one upset against an elite player.
