Olympic Handball Calendar: Top Dates to watch out for, Top 3 and a Pick for the Winner

In a little over a week from now, we will see a few events at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, France get underway.

One of the sports that we will get a look at in the opening days is handball, which is a fast-paced sport that looks like a cross between soccer and water polo played on a hard court.

My Analysis

When it comes to wagering on this sport, there are some things that you can draw on besides the current odds.

Handball has a World Championship tournament every year, so we know who is coming in as the champs on both the men’s and women’s side of things.

With all of that in mind, let’s look ahead at the Olympic handball tournament.

Dates and Format

There will be 12 nations competing in both tournaments, with those teams split up into groups of 6.

The top 4 teams in each group will advance to the knockout stage, and you can easily go to the official Olympic Games website to get a look at the bracket, which could help you make your wagers.

The first set of group games begins on July 25 and will continue on through the early part of August.

The knockout games begin on August 6 on the women’s side and the 7th on the men’s side. The medal games are on the 10th and 11th of August.

Key Dates

  • Saturday, August 10, 10:00: Women’s Bronze Medal Match
  • Saturday, August 10, 15:00: Women’s Gold Medal Match
  • Sunday, August 11, 9:00: Men’s Bronze Medal Match

Men’s Olympic Handball Odds

Over the last years or so, there have been several handball tournaments that helped decide who made it to the Olympic Games in France.

Denmark ended 2023 as the World Champions, with France and Spain landing the other medal spots.

The favorites to win the gold here are France, who will of course have the advantage of playing at home.

They are listed at +156, while Denmark (+166), Sweden (+590), and Spain (+960) are also in among the favorites to at least land a medal.

One thing to consider here is that Sweden come into this one having won the European Championship, which was played in the early part of this year.

I think that makes them a real threat, and I might well be tempted to take a shot at them winning the gold medal.

I’m not sure any other nation can break that top 4 and land a medal.

  • France +156
  • Denmark +166
  • Sweden +590
  • Spain +960
  • Croatia +1425
  • Egypt +1675
  • Norway +1950
  • Germany +3000
  • Hungary +7000
  • Slovenia +9500
  • Argentina +28000
  • Japan +28000

Women’s Olympic Handball Odds

The women’s tournament looks to be a little clearer, as we have a definite favorite heading into the Olympics.

That would be France (-101), who are the current world champions.

It was Norway, Denmark, and Sweden who filled out the other 3 spots in that tournament, with a couple of those teams considered definite medal prospects this summer.

Norway is in at odds of +166 to win gold, while Denmark is at +600.

Sweden is further down the board and currently sitting at +1550. It is the Netherlands who are 4th on the bookies board at odds of +1025.

It really does look as though the final might well come down to France and one of the other nations.

I would not sleep on Sweden here, and while I don’t think they will win it all, they look like a good medal pick.

  • France -101
  • Norway +166
  • Denmark +600
  • Netherlands +1025
  • Sweden +1550
  • Germany +2300
  • Spain +12000
  • Hungary +14000
  • Brazil +15000
  • Slovenia +40000
  • Korea Republic +80000
  • Angola +80000
