Betting the Top Stakes Races for the Weekend

This weekend, Saratoga highlights female turf runners in the Grade 2 Flower Bowl Stakes and 2 year old fillies in the Grade 1 Spinaway.

Del Mar has their highlight day of the summer meet when top horses on the west coast, including mare Adare Manor, join the starting gate for the Grade 1 Pacific Classic.

Check out more info for the Spinaway, the Flower Bowl, the Pacific Classic and two other fantastic races happening on Saturday, August 31.

Writer’s Top Picks Happening on the Fourth Racing Weekend of August

Grade 2 Flower Bowl Stakes

1 3/8 miles turf – 4 year old fillies and mares
Friday, August 31st, 2024
Saratoga Race Course

Ageless War Like Goddess, a 7 year old mare, leads the field for Saturday’s Grade 1 Flower Bowl Stakes.

War Like Goddess won a grade 3 in her last.

Expect most of the betting dollars to land onto the mare.

Eternal Hope, Cristophe Clement trained La Mehana, Parnac, and Millie Girl will attract action.

McKulick, a Chad Brown runner, may challenge War Like Goddess for favoritism.

Brown’s other runner, Idea Generation, also has a shot.

Grade 1 Spinaway

7 furlongs dirt – 2 year old fillies
Friday, August 31st, 2024
Saratoga Race Course

Brad Cox hopes that Immersive, a Nyquist sired filly who broke the maiden in July, is as good as she looked when scoring the first victory.

Immersive is likely to go off the chalk in what will be an interesting race.

Todd Pletcher won’t start a filly.

So Sherbini and Reliable Source should have their fans.

Sherbini comes from the Mark Casse barn and Steve Asmussen trains Reliable Source.

Salted, another Mark Casse charge, will also run.

Saffie Joseph Jr. puts the saddle on The Queens MG, a solid winner of the Adirondack in the last.

Grade 2 Del Mar Handicap

1 3/8 miles turf – 3 year olds and up
Friday, August 31st, 2024
Del Mar Thoroughbred Club

Phil D’Amato trains three of the four projected top betting choices in the Del Mar Handicap.

D’Amato’s top runner is Gold Phoenix, a turf specialist that has had much success over Del Mar’s grass.

Balnikhov and Rockemperor will also run for D’Amato.

Favoritism should land onto Rick Dutrow trained Master Piece.

Since returning to the races after a 10-year suspension, Dutrow’s horses have excelled on the track.

Richard Mandella has a contender in Linda’s Gift.

There Goes Harvard, Dicey Mo Chara, and Balladeer should also run.

Grade 2 Del Mar Mile

1 mile turf – 3 year olds and up
Friday, August 31st, 2024
Del Mar Thoroughbred Club

There’s a great possibility Bob Baffert saddles the favorite in Du Jour.

The Del Mar turf mile specialist may try to steal the race on the front end.

Peter Miller’s Exulted and Phil D’Amato trained Conclude will challenge Du Jour.

Irideo, Astronomer, and Brand all have a shot.

First Peace and Halfway Line should also run.

Grade 1 Pacific Classic

1 ¼ miles dirt – 3 year olds and up
Friday, August 31st, 2024
Del Mar Thoroughbred Club

Bob Baffert believes Adare Manor is good enough to beat the boys.

The 5 year old mare has won three straight graded races.

Two of the three were grade 1 events.

The Baffert runner can go to the lead or stalk, which give her a tactical edge.

Baffert’s other runner, Reincarnate, also has a chance.

Dr. Venkman and Il Miracolo are the other two horses that players are likely to back.

Mixto, None Above the Law, and Full Serrano are longshots.

Doug O’Neil has a shot with Katonah.

August’s Top Stakes Races: Fourth Weekend | Saturday, August 21st, 2024

Top Stakes Races for the Weekend

Saratoga’s biggest day of racing happens on August 24.

The Mid-Summer Derby, the annual Travers Stakes, headlines a massive Saturday race card that includes three other grade 1 events.

Things break from the gate on Friday when 4 year old fillies and mares run in the Grade 1 Personal Ensign.

Check out more information for five of this weekend’s top graded horse races.

Writer’s Top Picks Happening on the Fourth Racing Weekend of August

Grade 1 Personal Ensign Stakes

1 1/8 miles dirt – 4 year old fillies and up
Friday, August 23rd, 2024
Saratoga Race Course

Five runners have signed up for the Personal Ensign.

All five have a shot. Brad Cox, trained by Brad Cox, should go off the chalk.

But Idiomized didn’t look good in her last.

So don’t be surprised if Chad Brown trained Randomized goes off the favorite.

Xigera, from the Phil Bauer barn, and Soul of An Angel will have their fans.

Brown has a second contender in Grade 2 Shuvee winner Raging Sea.

Grade 1 Ballerina Handicap

7 furlongs dirt – 3 year old fillies and up
Saturday, August 24th, 2024
Saratoga Race Course

Vahva is on a hot streak. The Grade 1 Derby City Distaff winner added the Grade 3 Chicago to her list of victories in her last.

Vahva will go off as one of the favorites.

Clement L. Hirsch winner Scylla should be the chalk.

Bill Mott trains the Tapit sired miss.

Society hails from the Steve Asmussen barn and Chad Brown puts the saddle on Accede.

Munny’s Gold, Shidabhuti, another Chad Brown runner, Chi Town Lady and Positano Sunset will also break from the gate.

Grade 1 Sword Dancer Stakes

1 ½ miles turf – 4 year olds and up
Saturday, August 24th, 2024
Saratoga Race Course

A small but talented field will lineup in the Grade 1 Sword Dancer.

Charles Appleby and Godolphin will race two, Manhattan Stakes winner Measured Time and Bowling Green winner Silver Knott.

Linda Rice tries for the win money with Pioneering Spirit.

Todd Pletcher puts the saddle on Grand Sonata and Cristophe Clement trained veteran Soldier Rising will also run.

Clement’s other runner is hard knocking Far Bridge.

Grade 1 Forego Stakes

7 furlongs dirt – 4 year olds and up
Saturday, August 24th, 2024
Saratoga Race Course

Some of the best sprinters in the nation will line up for the Grade 1 Forego.

Steve Asmussen’s Gun Pilot headlines the field.

Twisted Ride, Baby Yoda, and Mullikin should attract action.

Cagliostro and Run Classic are good enough to pull off the upset.

A couple of longshots, Angkor and Full Screen, are worth a look.

Grade 1 Travers Stakes

1 ¼ miles dirt – 3 year olds
Saturday, August 24th, 2024
Saratoga Race Course

This year’s Travers sets up for Chad Brown trained Sierra Leone.

The perennial bridesmaid, Sierra Leone finished second in the Kentucky Derby, third in the Belmont, and second in the Jim Dandy, gets plenty of pace to chase.

Fierceness and Dornoch, the Florida Derby and Belmont winner, will knock heads early.

Dornoch has won his last two over rival Mindframe by going straight to the lead. Fierceness doesn’t rate well.

So the two should go at it as soon as the gates open.

Batten Down is the dark horse.

Money will land on Thorpedo Anna.

Anna, though, runs like Fierceness and Dornoch.

The accomplished filly could get beat up on the front end.

War Bomber is another that will have fans.

Secret Reserve, Ironstone, Wicked Django, and Kaukokaipuu should also run.

Grade 2 Lake Placid Stakes

1 1/16 miles turf – 3 year old fillies
Saratoga Race Course

Fourteen runners will step onto Saratoga’s grass course for the Grade 2 Lake Placid.

Among the fourteen, Boiling Stakes winner and Chad Brown trained Spaliday projects as the favorite.

Frankie Dettori rides and Frankie on the grass is always a good thing.

Cheire DeVaux equine She Feels Pretty will challenge Spaliday for the favorite’s title.

She Feels Pretty finished second in the Grade 1 Belmont Oaks in the last.

Last out maiden winner Proctor Street and D.

Wayne Lukas trained Lemon Muffin will have their fans.

Godolphin and Charles Appleby plan on running Beautiful Love.

If Beautiful Love goes, horseplayers might get a square price on Spaliday and She Feels Pretty.

Grade 1 Alabama Stakes

1 ¼ miles dirt – 3 year old fillies
Saratoga Race Course

Kentucky Oaks winner Thorpedo Anna will run against the boys in the Travers, which is why this year’s Alabama is a wide open race.

Todd Pletcher trained Candied drew post 7 and should go off the chalk.

Candied finished second to Thorpedo Anna in the Grade 1 Coaching Club American Oaks in the last.

Intricate, second in the CCA Oaks, Iowa Oaks winner Just Basking, and Grade 3 Delaware Oaks champion will attract betting dollars.

So will Indiana Oaks winner Chatalas.

Writer’s Top Picks Happening on the Second Racing Weekend of August

Grade 1 Saratoga Derby Invitational Stakes

1 3/16 miles turf – 3 year olds
Saratoga Race Course

Charles Appleby puts the saddle on Legend of Time, a Sea the Stars progeny that should improve off a decent third int eh Grade 1 Belmont Derby in the last.

Legend of Time, no doubt, will go off close to favoritism.

Cristophe Clement saddles two contenders in Carson’s Run and Deterministic.

Royal Majesty from the Bill Mott barn and Trikari, the Belmont Derby winner, will have their fans.

Although a short field, the Saratoga Derby should be a competitive race.

Grade 1 Fourstardave Handicap

1 mile turf – 3 year olds and up
Saratoga Race Course

Chad Brown trained and Grade 3 Kelso Stakes winner Carl Spackler and Godolphin and Charles Appleby charge Master of the Seas will battle for favoritism.

Todd Pletcher has a possible upsetter in Major Dude.

Major Dude won an allowance race in July as a prep for this.

Money Supply and Ottoman, the Grade 2 Wise Dan winner, have big chances.

Also pay attention to the money that lands on Strong Quality.

The Manhattan Stakes performance wasn’t good but Mark Casse is a master at turning a horse’s form around.

Grade 1 Beverly D. Stakes

1 3/16 miles turf – 3 and 4 year old fillies and mares
Colonial Downs Racetrack

Only six runners have confirmed for the Beverly D.

Among the six, Libban from the Saffie Joseph barn projects to attract the most action.

Neil Drysdale plans on running Nadette, fourth in the Grade 1 Gamely in the last.

Fev Rover and Mission of Joy will also run.

Kevin Attard trained Moira finished second in the Grade 1 Diana in her last.

Moira could be tough in this.

Grade 1 Arlington Million

1 ¼ miles turf – 3 year olds and up
Colonial Downs Racetrack

Claude McGaughey trained Integration won the Million Preview Stakes.

Shug puts the saddle on Integration and expects the Quality Road sired runner to at least hit the board.

Ancient Rome and Sugoi will also attract a lot of action.

The favorite, though, projects as Nation’s Pride, the Godolphin campaigned and Charles Appleby trained runner.

Todd Pletcher sends Talk of the Nation to the starting gate while Graham Motion will roll the dice with Highland Chief.

Grade 2 Yellow Ribbon Handicap

1 1/16 miles turf – 3 and 4 year olds fillies and mares
Del Mar Thoroughbred Club

Eleven have confirmed for the Yellow Ribbon Handicap.

Among the eleven, Anisette, Ruby Nell, and Bellabel should attract the most action.

Ruby Nell, trained by legend Richard Mandella, should improve off the sixth place finish in the Gamely.

Anisette won the Grade 1 Gamely and will be looking to make two straight.

Spirit and Glory, Super Shine, and Five Towns will also get backing.

Make sure to handicap every runner in the 2024 Yellow Ribbon.

The race projects as one that might go to a longshot.

Writer’s Top Picks Happening on the First Racing Weekend of August

Grade 2 Glen Falls Stakes

1 ½ miles on turf – 4 year old fillies and mares
Friday, August 2nd, 2024
Saratoga Race Course

Chad Brown trained McKulick will attract betting dollars.

But the daughter of Frankel hasn’t lived up to expectations in her last few races.

There’s a good chance horseplayers back Charles Appleby trained Eternal Hope to trot to the winner’s circle.

The Godolphin bred runner won the Grade 2 Sands Point in the last.

Alpha Bella from the Todd Pletcher barn, Brad Cox trained Chop Chop, and Cristophe Clement trained Parnac should also run.

Grade 1 Test Stakes

7 furlongs dirt – 3 year old fillies
Friday, August 2nd, 2024
Saratoga Race Course

Brad Cox should put the saddle on the favorite, Emery.

The 3 year old filly finished first in the Grade3 Victory Ride in her last.

If Emery does win, she’ll have to beat Chad Brown trained Ways and Means.

Brown thinks so highly of the Practical Joke sired miss that Chad goes allowance to Grade 1.

My Main Squeeze and Brightwork will attract action.

So will Girven sired longshot Belle’s Blue Bell.

Grade 1 Saratoga Derby

1 3/16 miles turf – 3 year olds
Friday, August 2nd, 2024
Saratoga Race Course

Charles Appleby and Godolphin are back at Saratoga with a strong contender in Belmont Derby third place finisher Legend of Time.

The likely favorite gets the services of top European rider William Buick.

Cugino and Deterministic will attract action. Aidan O’Brien saddles a contender in Diego Velasquez.

Like Appleby, O’Brien puts top European jockey Ryan Moore aboard.

Give Deigo Velasquez a massive chance to get it done.

Grade 1 Whitney Stakes

1 1/8 miles dirt – 4 year olds and up
Friday, August 2nd, 2024
Saratoga Race Course

This year’s Grade 1 Whitney is a wide open event.

Post Time, National Treasure, Disarm, First Mission, Crupi, and Bright Future all have a shot.

Among the favorites, which should be National Treasure, Bright Future, and First Mission, the Bob Baffert trainee, National Treasure, looks tough to beat.

First Mission and Bright Future are both solid equines, though.

So make sure to handicap fully before settling on the winner.

Grade 1 Clement L. Hirsch Stakes

1 1/16 miles dirt – 3 and 4 year old fillies and mares
Friday, August 2nd, 2024
Del Mar Thoroughbred Club

Del Mar’s top weekend race boasts plenty of talent.

No doubt, horseplayers will make the Baffert runner, Adare Manor, the chalk. Adare Manor won the Grade 2 Santa Monica in her last and loves Del Mar.

Bill Mott ships in Scylla, the Grade 1 Fleur de Lis winner.

Scylla has the makings of one of the top fillies in the nation.

She has the talent to upset Adare Manor.

Other contenders include Pretty Mischievous, Desert Dawn, Flying Connection, and Richard Mandell trained Coffee in Bed.

Pretty Mischievous, the Acorn winner, will go off the chalk. The Acorn victory was the second straight after Pretty Mischievous pulled off the Kentucky Oaks upset in May.

Mike McCarthy trained Clearly Unhinged and Dorth Vader from the Michael Yates barn will also attract action. Dorth Vader finished second behind Pretty Mischievous in the Acorn.

D. Wayne Lukas trained Market Sense was great on debut, winning by 3 ¾ lenghts. But in the Sanford, the best the Lukas trained runner could do was finish sixth. Still, because Market Sense is one of the few with experience other than a maiden score, the Street Sense sired runner will attract action.

Todd Pletcher trained Haul should go off the favorite. The last out maiden winner was ultra impressive. Lasso, Rhyme Schemes, Divieto, Edified, and South America, all last out maiden winners, will also run.

Secretariat Stakes | Grade 2

1 mile turf – 3 year olds
Saturday, August 12th, 2023

Arlington Million Day switches from defunct Arlington Park to Colonial Downs. The first of note on the massive turf stakes card is the Grade 2 Secretariat. Major Dude, from the Pletcher barn, and Nagirroc, the Graham Motion trained and Grade 3 Manila third place finisher, will attract action.

So will Silver Knott, the Charles Appleby runner that finished fifth in the Grade 1 Belmont Derby Invitational in the last. If you’re looking for an underdog with a shot, consider backing Cherie DeVaux trained Northern Invader.

Neige Blanche, Closing Remarks, and Tunerloose will attract action. School Dance, Signature Perfect, and Macadamia will also garner betting dollars. Macadamia, a Phil D’Amato trained runner, could go off the chalk.

Top Stakes Races Third Week of August: Friday, August 25th – Saturday, August 26th, 2023

Personal Ensign Stakes | Grade 1

1 1/8 miles dirt – 4 year olds & up
Friday, August 25th, 2023
Saratoga Race Course; Saratoga Springs, New York

Three of the top mares in the nation, Secret Oath, Nest, and Clairiere, headline what should be an amazing rendition of the Personal Ensign. Steve Asmussen trained Clairiere projects as the favorite.

Nest, who beat Clairiere in the Grade 2 Shuvee in the last, will challenge Clairiere for favoritism. Malloy, Idiomatic, and Sixtythreecaliber should also run.

Forego Stakes | Grade 1

7 furlongs dirt – 3 year olds & up
Saturday, August 26th, 2023
Saratoga Race Course; Saratoga Springs, New York

As of the Tuesday before the race, only four runners will go in the Grade 1 Forego. Rivals Elite Power and Gunite, which finished 1-2 in the Alfred G. Vanderbilt in their last, should attract all the action.

Synthesis and Lightning Larry will fight for the show spot. Even if others join, Elite Power and Gunite look too talented to finish out of the exacta.

Sword Dancer Stakes | Grade 1

1 ½ miles turf – 3 year olds & up
Saturday, August 26th, 2023
Saratoga Race Course; Saratoga Springs, New York

Aidan O’Brien trained Bolshoi Ballet and Channel Maker from the Bill Mott barn lead the Sword Dancer field.

Soldier Rising, Verstappen, and Stone Age are probable. Stone Age is an intriguing prospect because the runner goes first time for Chad Brown.

H. Allen Jerkens Memorial Stakes | Grade 1

7 furlongs dirt – 3 year olds
Saturday, August 26th, 2023
Saratoga Race Course; Saratoga Springs, New York

Indiana Derby winner Verifying takes on Woody Stephens winner Arabian Lion, Dwyer winner Fort Bragg, and Amsterdam winner New York Thunder in what should be an exceptional H. Allen Jerkens Memorial.

Todd Pletcher puts the saddle on Wood Memorial winner Lord Miles. One In Vermillion, which finished third in the Grade 3 West Virginia Derby in the last, will also run.

7 furlongs dirt – 3 year old fillies & up
Saturday, August 26th, 2023
Saratoga Race Course; Saratoga Springs, New York

Three equines will attract the most action. Chad Brown trained Good Night Olive will go off the chalk. Star Echo Zulu from the Steve Asmussen barn will challenge Good Night Olive for favoritism. Society, another from the Asmussen barn, should go off third choice.

Matareya and Caramel Swirl will have their fans. Dr. B and Sterling Silver should go off at longshot odds.

Travers Stakes | Grade 1

1 ¼ miles dirt – 3 year olds
Saturday, August 26th, 2023
Saratoga Race Course; Saratoga Springs, New York

Forte, the Jim Dandy winner and Kentucky Derby morning line chalk before having to scratch, will go off the chalk. Mage, the Derby winner, should go off second choice while Arcangelo, the Belmont Stakes winner will be third choice.

National Treasure, Bob Baffert’s Preakness Stakes winning colt, should attract action. Tapit Traice, Scotland, and Disarm will also run.

Although Forte, Mage, and Arcangelo should be the favorites, the race is wide open. Scotland looked fantastic winning the Curlin in the last. Disarm and Tapit Trice are both quality horses and National Treasure will be the fastest out of the gate. Handicap the 2023 Travers Stakes fully before deciding which three-year-old steps into the winner’s circle.

Previous Betting News

Both Saratoga and Del Mar have massive cards on Saturday. The Spa runs two of their most popular races, the Grade 2 Flower Bowl Invitational and the Grade 1 Jockey Club Gold Cup.

Del Mar’s most electrifying card of the meet happens on Saturday when horses run in the Grade 2 Del Mar Mile, the Grade 2 Del Mar Handicap, and the Grade 1 Pacific Classic.

Check out more horse racing lines for those races as well as the Grade 1 Spinaway at Saratoga on Sunday.

1 3/8 mile on turf – 3 year old fillies & up
Saturday, September 2nd, 2023
Saratoga Race Course; Saratoga Springs, New York

Chad Brown trained McKulick will go off the chalk. Cristophe Clement saddles a couple of runners in this one in the hopes of upsetting McKulick.

Both Atomic Blonde and Amazing Grace go for Clement. Sparkling Blue from the Graham Motion barn and Jack Sisterson trained Tamarama are the other two confirmed runners.

Jockey Club Gold Cup | Grade 1

1 ¼ miles dirt – 3 year olds & up
Saturday, September 2nd, 2023
Saratoga Race Course, Saratoga Springs, New York

Right now, the Jockey Club Gold Cup looks like a 2-horse race between Kenny McPeek trained Rattle N Roll and Godolphin owned and Michael Stidham trained Proxy. In the last, Rattle N Roll finished second in the Grade 1 Stephen Foster.

Proxy won the Grade 3 Monmouth Cup in his last. Others planning on entering the starting gate include Clapton, Unbridled Bomber, and Warrior Johnny.

Del Mar Mile | Grade 2

1 mile turf – 3 year olds & up
Saturday, September 2nd, 2023
Del Mar Thoroughbred Club, Del Mar, California

The top two finishers in the Grade 2 Eddie Read duke it out in the Grade 2 Del Mar Mile on Saturday. Gold Phoenix, trained by Phil D’Amato, took home top prize at the Eddie Read. Balnikhov finished second. Both will attract action in this.

Irideo, Cabo Spirit, and Exaulted will have their fans. Bob Baffert trained Du Jour and War At Sea from the Ron Ellis barn will go off at overlay odds.

Del Mar Handicap | Grade 2

1 3/8 miles turf – 3 year olds & up
Saturday, September 2nd, 2023
Del Mar Thoroughbred Club, Del Mar, California

Connections for Balnikhov may decide to run in the Grade 2 Del Mar Handicap. Balnikhov and Gold Phoenix both hail from the D’Amato barn. Phil may want to keep them separate on Saturday.

If Balnikhov goes, he will break from the gate the chalk. Peter Miller trained None Above the Law will go off second choice and either Cathkin Peak, another D’Amato runner, or John Sadler trained Missed the Cut will go off the third choice.

Masteroffoxhounds, Offlee Naughty, Azul Coast, and Salesman should also run.

1 ¼ miles dirt – 3 year olds & up

Up to 11 may go in the Grade 1 Pacific Classic. Richard Mandell trained three-year-old Geaux Rocket Ready, the Grade 1 Haskell Invitational winner, could end up the chalk.

Tripoli, Arabian Knight, Stilleto Boy, Defunded, and Slow Down Andy will garner action. Grade 2 San Diego Handicap winner Senor Buscador, Piroli, Skinner, and Order And Law are possible.

Previous Betting News

This weekend won’t be as big as last. Saturday, though, is Arlington Million Day. Seven graded stakes races happen this weekend, including the Grade 1 Fourstardave Handicap at Saratoga Race Course, and three grade one races, including the Grade 1 Beverly D. Stakes at Arlington. The Grade 3 Longacres Mile is at Emerald Downs on Sunday. Check out top plays and Horse Racing Odds for the Top Stakes Races of the Week from Saturday, August 14th to Sunday, August 15th. Horse Racing Odds & Picks August 9th Edition

Top Stakes Races for the Week

When: Saturday, Aug. 14 – Sunday, Aug. 15

Saratoga Race Course – Saturday, Aug. 14

Grade 2 Saratoga Special – 6 ½ furlongs dirt – $200,000

Todd Pletcher, Tom Amoss, Steve Asmussen, and Bill Mott all have runners in this race. Asmussen trained Gunite, sired by Gun Runner, should attract the most action. If the Pletcher runner, Midnight Worker, goes, watch out. Todd Pletcher seems to win every 2-year-old race at The Spa.

Grade 1 Fourstardave Handicap – 1 mile turf – $500,000

Six runners are probable for the Fourstardave on Saturday. Of the six, Raging Bull, trained by Chad Brown, should attract the most action followed by Set Piece, a Brad Cox runner. Whisper Not, Rinaldi, Daddy Is a Legend, and Got Stormy should also run.

Arlington Racetrack – Saturday, Aug. 14

Grade 3 Pucker Up Stakes – 1 1/8 miles turf – $100,000

New York based trainer Chad Brown puts the saddle on Shantisara in the Grade 3 Pucker Up. Flown, from the Brendan Walsh barn, will also run. The favorite should be Oyster Box, trained by Graham Motion.

Grade 1 Mister D. Stakes – 1 ¼ miles turf – $600,000

Mike Maker’s Zulu Alpha, Brown trained Domestic Spending, and Armory from the Aidan O’Brien barn will fight for favoritism. O’Brien doesn’t often enter in the U.S. unless he feels he can win the race. Consider all three serious contenders.

Grade 1 Bruce D. Stakes – 1 mile turf – $300,000

Nine runners could line up to contend the mile distance in the Bruce D. on Saturday. Of the nine, Therideofalifetime, King of Miami, and Tango Tango Tango figure to vie for favoritism.

Grade 1 Beverly D. Stakes – 1 3/16 miles turf – $400,000

Betting should revolve around Mean Mary, Santa Barbara, and Naval Laughter. But although the three favorites will demand most of the betting action, don’t look past Chad Brown trained Lemista. She failed big time in her last. Brown runners rarely run two bad races in a row.

Emerald Downs – Sunday, Aug. 15

Grade 3 Longacres Mile – 1 mile – $100,000

Neil Drysdale trained Majestic Eagle and Anyportinastorm from the Peter Miller barn should attract big time action. Horseplayers rate Anyportinastorm higher than the 7-year-old horses competition, which will make the City Zip sired runner the chalk. The Longacres Mile should be one of the more competitive graded events this weekend, though. So make sure to handicap all runners before settling on a short-price.

Horse Racing Odds & Picks August 2nd Edition

Top Stakes Races for the Week

When: Friday, August 6 – Sunday, August 8

Saratoga Race Course – Friday, August 6

Grade 2 National of Racing Museum Hall of Fame – 1 mile turf – $200,000

At least eight horses will run in the National of Racing Museum Hall of Fame. Trainer Chad Brown should saddle the favorite, Public Sector. Mark Casse trained Easy Time won a Grade 3 in the colt’s last.

Del Mar Racetrack – Friday, August 6

Grade 2 Sorrento Stakes – 6 furlongs dirt – $200,000

Bob Baffert will enter last out maiden winner Eda. Doug O’Neil should saddle a couple in here, She’s So Shiny and It’s Simple.

Saratoga Race Course – Saturday, August 7

Grade 2 Glen Falls Stakes – 1 ½ miles turf – $250,000

The Glenn Falls projects as one of this weekend’s most competitive graded races. Cristophe Clement trained Call Me Love and a couple of Chad Brown runners, Orglandes and My Sister Nat, could end up vying for favoritism.

Grade 1 Longines Test Stakes – 7 furlongs dirt – $500,000

At least 10 will run in the Grade 1 Test Stakes. Search Results, trained by Chad Brown, figures to go off the chalk. Baffert will have a runner in Illumination while Todd Pletcher should enter Zaajel.

Grade 1 Whitney Stakes – 1 1/8 miles dirt – $1,000,000

Six of the top horses in the country will contest the 1 1/8 miles Whitney. Happy Saver, Swiss Skydiver, Maxfield, Knicks Go, By My Standards, and Silver State can all win. Steve Asmussen’s Silver State has won 5 straight but could go off an overlay because of how deep the Whitney field will be.

Grade 1 Saratoga Derby Invitational – 1 3/16 miles turf – $1,000,000

It’s not often 3-year-old males can run on the turf for a 1 million purse, which explains why connections for 13 horses are pointing to the Saratoga Derby Invitational. Aidan O’Brien trained Bolshoi Ballet won the Belmont Derby in his last and figures to go off the chalk.

Del Mar Racetrack – Saturday, August 7

Grade 2 Yellow Ribbon Handicap – 1 1/16 miles turf – $200,000

Only 4 runners are confirmed for the Yellow Ribbon. The good news? All four, Maxim Rate, Princess Grace, Dogtag, and Ippodamia’s Girl, have a shot.

Grade 2 Best Pal Stakes – 6 furlongs dirt – $200,000

Papacap, Our Empire, Olympic Legend, Charter Oak, and Big City Lights will contest the 6 furlongs in the $200,000 Best Pal Stakes. The closer we get to race day, the more horses should join, including one or two from the Bob Baffert barn.

Saratoga Race Course – Sunday, August 8

Grade 2 Adirondack Stakes – 6 ½ furlongs dirt – $200,000

Although she’s won just her maiden, Tom Amoss trained Microbiome figures to battle for favoritism in the Adirondack Stakes. Microbiome looked sensational in her first race. Boss Lady Kim, Mainstay, J L’s Rockette, Onetheonesandtwos, and Steve Asmussen charge Wicked Halo should also run.

Grade 3 Saratoga Invitational Oaks – 1 3/16 miles turf – $700,000

9 horses will run in the Saratoga Invitational Oaks. Todd Pletcher’s Con Lima, Higher Truth from the Chad Brown barn, and Plum Ali, going for Cristophe Clement, will vie for favoritism.

Del Mar Racetrack – Sunday, August 8

Grade 3 La Jolla Stakes – 1 1/16 miles turf – $150,000

Trainer John Saddler plans on putting the saddle on three runners, including Santa Anita Derby winner Rock Your World. Other contenders include Wyfire from the Peter Miller barn, and No Foolery Here trained by Richard Baltas.

When: Wednesday, Aug. 26 – Sunday, Aug. 30

Wednesday, August 26

Saratoga Racecourse

Mahoney Stakes – 5 ½ Furlongs Turf – $85,000

Turned Aside, Jack and Noah, and Maven should battle each other for favoritism. Of the three, Turned Aside may have the best chance. Those looking for an underdog should consider By Land and Sea or Sky of Hook.

Thursday, August 27

Saratoga Racecourse

Smart N Fancy Stakes – 5 ½ Furlongs Turf – $85,000

Cristophe Clement trained Rose Flower figures to go off the chalk. Clement has had an awesome Saratoga meet. However, Peaceful, Givemotherarose, Victory Kingdom, and Saratoga Treasure are all capable.

Friday, August 28

Saratoga Racecourse

Grade 3 Lake George Stakes – 1 Mile Turf – $100,000

Saffie Joseph Jr. trained Sugar Fix may have a say. No doubt, though, that Chad Brown’s horse, Selflessly, goes off the chalk. Sweet Melania and Micheline are both solid runners.

Del Mar Racecourse

Tranquility Lake Stakes – 1 Mile – $65,000

Put your handicapping shoes on for the Tranquility Lake Stakes on Friday. Bob Baffert trained Message and Peter Miller trained Proud Emma figure to go off the favorites. But, don’t sleep on Smiling Shirlee. She’s fast!

Saturday, August 29

Saratoga Racecourse

Grade 1 Sword Dancer Invitational – 1 ½ Miles Turf – $500,000

Grade 1 United Nations winner Aquaphobia. Sadler’s Joy got disqualified from 1st to 4th in the Grade 2 Bowling Green in his last. The Tom Albertrani trainee figures to go off no worse than second choice in this.

Grade 1 Forego Stakes – 7 Furlongs – $300,000

Chad Brown trained Complexity will go off the chalk. But don’t accept short odds. The Forego projects as one of the deepest Grade 1 races of the year. In addition to Complexity, Win Win Win, Whitmore, Firenze Fire, Everfast, Mind Control, Lexitonian and True Timber are all probable.

Grade 2 Amsterdam Stakes – 6 Furlongs – $150,000

Grade 1 H. Allen Jerkens Memorial second-place finisher Tap It to Win headlines a nice group in the Amsterdam. Take a long look at Yaupon. The Steve Asmussen trainee is undefeated in two starts and takes a massive jump up in class from the allowance ranks to this Grade 2.

Grade 3 Saranac Stakes – 1 Mile Turf – $100,000

Lightly raced Big Dreaming figures to get some looks. Michael Stidham trains and the colt has a win and a second from two races.

Del Mar Racecourse

Grade 2 Pat O’Brien Stakes – 7 Furlongs – $150,000

John Sadler saves Flagstaff for Del Mar. The Speightstown sired runner picks up Victor Espinoza, American Pharoah’s jockey, for the Pat O’Brien run on Saturday.

Monmouth Park

Grade 3 Eatontown Stakes – 1 1/16 Miles Turf – $150,000

Graded turf stakes at Monmouth are often competitive. Hope to get a price on a front-runner or presser. On most days, the turf favors front running ponies.

Sunday, August 30

Saratoga Racecourse

Grade 3 Shuvee Stakes – 1 1/8 Miles – $125,000

Bill Mott will saddle a couple in here, Horologist and Golden Award. Todd Pletcher will saddle three, Nonna Madeline, Bellera, and Another Broad. Neither Bill’s, nor Todd’s horses figure to go off the favorite. The chalk should be Royal Flag, trained by Chad Brown. She was too far off the pace in the Grade 3 Molly Pitcher in her last, a race that Horologist won.

Saratoga Racecourse Picks for Saturday, August 8

Race 7 – 3:42 pm ET – 7 Furlongs Dirt – $300,000 Grade 1 Ballerina Stakes

Trainer Claude McGaughey has a sneaky longshot in the Grade 1 Ballerina Stakes on Saturday. Pink Sands finished fifth by 18 lengths in her last, the Grade 1 Ogden Phipps. That race was at 1 1/16 miles. On Saturday, she cuts back to 7 furlongs. That could make the difference because at 7 furlongs, Sands has 2 wins, a second, and 3 thirds from 7 races.

Come Dancing stretches from 6 ½ to 7 furlongs, which should help the cause. Now back with trainer Carlos Martin, Dancing has a couple of wins from 3 races over the Saratoga dirt. Horses don’t always like running at The Spa. Come Dancing is one that does.

The race sets up for 9/5 morning line chalk Bellafina. She’s never taken her “A” game on the road, though. If this race were at Santa Anita or Del Mar, she’d be tough to ignore. But because it’s in New York, it makes sense to try and beat her for the win.

Win: Pink Sands
Place: Come Dancing
Show: Bellafina

Race 9 – 5:02 pm ET – 1 ½ Miles Inner Turf– $150,000 Grade 3 Waya Stakes

Don’t expect Cristophe Clement trained Olympic Games to hold the 4/1 morning line odds. There’s a good chance the Olympic Glory sired 4-year-old filly goes off as the favorite. Clement is winning races at The Spa at 33%. That’s incredible. Not only that, but 23% winning jockey Irad Oritz Jr. steps aboard.

Giant’s Causeway sired Beau Belle could add value to the exacta. At 10/1 on the morning line she’s worth a look to win this. The reason we don’t pick her first is because she’s a front runner in a race with other speed. We still believe she can hang on for second.

It’s not that we dislike Mrs. Sippy. It’s that we can’t endorse at 6/5 odds. If the odds drift to around 3/1, a big if, we’d consider the Graham Motion trained runner for the win. All we can do right now is go off the morning line, though. At 6/5, Mrs. Sippy is an underlay for the win and a must use in the trifecta.

Win: Olympic Games
Place: Beau Belle
Show: Mrs. Sippy

Race 11 – 6:15 pm ET – 1 1/4 Miles Dirt – $1,000,000 Grade 1 Travers Stakes

We decided to try and beat Tiz the Law in the Grade 1 Travers. The hot horse is the Baffert trained Uncle Chuck. The undefeated Uncle Mo sired runner is good, but all the buzz means he goes off as an underlay. That’s why we’re siding with the Chad Brown trained Country Grammar to pull off the upset. Not only does Brown train, but Irad Oritz rides. Also, Grammar is bred to relish the 1 ¼ mile distance. Nobody knows for sure if either Chuck or the Law wants to run that far.

Uncle Chuck could take the lead in this and not look back. That’s why his morning line odds are at 5/2. Bob Baffert has done this before. He took a horse named Arrogate to the 2016 Travers Stakes. Arrogate won in gate-to-wire fashion. Chuck could do the same thing. But, we’re not willing to accept short odds just in case he does.

Tiz the Law should finish no worse than third. But if we’re dropping the even money chalk from the win and place slots, why not also ignore him in the trifecta? Again, if he likes the 1 ¼ miles distance, he probably wins by 6 lengths. If he doesn’t, he could finish fourth or worse.

Who can pick up the pieces if the Law doesn’t want to run 1 ¼ miles? We’re going with Max Player. Trainer Linda Rice is tearing it up at Saratoga. Not only that, but Max got fanned 7-wide in the Belmont Stakes in his last and still managed to finish third. If you do like Max Player, make sure to use him in all trifecta slots. He can win the Travers if Tiz the Law doesn’t want to run this far.

Win: Country Grammar
Place: Uncle Chuck
Show: Max Player

Del Mar Racing Picks for Saturday, August 8

Race 5 – 7:00 pm ET – 1 Mile Turf – $80,000 Allowance Optional Claiming

Simon Callaghan has a sharp horse ready to take the fifth on Saturday in Mind Out. The Tapit sired 3-year-old filly has just a maiden win to her credit. But she hasn’t finished off the board in 4 starts. This is the perfect spot for the 3/1 morning line top choice to get her second victory.

Bob Baffert trained Merneith tries grass for the first time. The 5/2 morning line chalk should love the lawn. Baffert trained Triple Crown winner American Pharoah sired. Pharoah has shown a knock for producing top turf runners. She finished third in the Santa Anita Oaks back in June. If Bob puts her on the turf, that’s where her future lies.

15/1 on the morning line Roadrunner’s Honor could get into the trifecta. The Doug O’Neil trained runner hasn’t raced on the turf since March. Her form appears to be turning around. She finished third in an optional claiming dirt race going 6 furlongs in her last at Los Al. Give her a chance to fill out the tri. She shouldn’t beat either Merneith or Mind Out, though.

Win: Mind Out
Place: Merneith
Show: Roadrunner’s Honor

Race 6 – 7:30 pm ET – 6 Furlongs Dirt – $150,000 Grade 2 Best Pal Stakes

Wesley Ward trained Roderick could be the best 2-year-old in the nation. The Into Mischief sired runner broke his maiden at first asking. He did it with style, blasting his competition by 8 ½ lengths while going 5 furlongs over Belmont’s main track. Unless he didn’t ship well, Roderick should take this on Saturday.

The hottest sire in the U.S. is Tiz the Law’s dad, Constitution. Law’s father sired Doug O’Neil trained Ambivalent, a 5/1 morning line choice who appears capable of upsetting Roderick if that one falters. Ambivalent finished second in his lone race. O’Neil is much better with horses running in their second races than their first. This one has a chance.

You’ve got to like Peter Miller trained Herd Immunity. After breaking his maiden at first asking, Miller entered the Union Rags sired 2-year-old into the Grade 3 Bashford Manor at Churchill Downs. Herd Immunity finished third as a close to 13/1 shot. Now back in California, the Miller runner could surprise if neither Roderick nor Ambivalent are at their best.

Win: Roderick
Place: Ambivalent
Show: Herd Immunity

Race 9 – 9:00 pm ET – 1 1/16 Miles Turf – $150,000 Grade 2 Yellow Ribbon Handicap

Richard Mandella trained Jolie Olimpica almost went wire-to-wire in the Grade 1 Jenny Wiley at Keeneland on July 11. Jolie couldn’t hold off top grass runner Rushing Fall. This field is much softer than what she faced in the Jenny Wiley. Gate-to-wire is a real possibility.

On paper, 6-year-old mare Beau Recall had no shot against the Grade 1 Just A Game field in her last. All she did was finish second behind Chad Brown trained monster Newspaperofrecord. This is a drop in class because although it’s a Grade 2, no horses like Newspaperofrecord or Uni are signed on for this. With some luck, she can beat the top choice.

Tonahutu ran well enough in her last race to win this. It’s a major step up from $62,500 claimers to a Grade 2, though. She’s the best longshot. So, if you’re not sold on Jolie or Beau, go for it!

Win: Jolie Olimpica
Place: Beau Recall
Show: Tonahutu

Saratoga Racecourse Picks for Saturday, August 1

Race 9 – 5:42 pm ET – 1 1/8 Miles Dirt – $750,000 Grade 1 Whitney

Favorite Tom’s d’Etat could be vulnerable in this spot. The Albert Stall trained runner blew away his competition to win the Grade 1 Stephen Foster in his last, but d’Etat ran a lifetime best. He could bounce.

That means we should look for a horse with a shot to upset the 6/5 chalk. That horse is Code of Honor. The Claude McGaughey runner won the Travers Stakes over this dirt as a three-year-old. He finished third in the Grade 1 Metropolitan in his last. No horse was going to beat Vekoma in that race. If Honor gets the right setup, he could win the Whitney.

Improbable is another 5/2 morning line shot that could take top honors. The Bob Baffert trained runner put everything together in his Gold Cup victory at Santa Anita back on June 6. It took Improbable a long time to figure things out. Now that he has, he can take another Grade 1.

Tom’s d’Etat should finish no worse than third. Stall has campaigned this one beautifully, which is why Tom has 11 wins from 18 races. Much respect to the chalk. If for some reason his odds drift to 8/5, consider him for the top spot.

Win: Code of Honor
Place: Improbable
Show: Tom’s d’Etat

Race 10 – 6:18 pm ET – 7 Furlongs Dirt– $300,000 Grade 1 H. Allen Jerkens

After carving out a 46 flat half and 6 furlongs in 1:09.4, we can understand why Tap It To Win faded to finish fifth in the Grade 1 Belmont Stakes in his last. On Saturday, the Mark Casse trained runner cuts back in distance and gets a nice, cozy, outside draw.

9/5 on the morning line No Parole should be tough to beat. The Violence sired runner trained by Tom Amoss won the Grade 1 Woody Stephens at Belmont by 3 ¾ lengths in his last. If jockey Luis Saez can get him to the lead, Parole may not look back.

Baffert trained Eight Rings failed in a non-graded stakes at Oaklawn Park going 6 furlongs in his last. Maybe, Eight Rings gives up once things get hard. Or, maybe, the horse required a couple of bad races to get it together. Who knows? In any case, because it’s Baffert, Rings is tough to leave out of the trifecta.

Win: Tap It To Win
Place: No Parole
Show: Eight Rings

Race 11 – 6:50 pm ET – 1 3/8 Miles Turf – $250,000 Grade 2 Bowling Green

Trainer Mike Maker is killing it at The Spa. He’s got 6 wins and 3 seconds from 21 races. That’s why we’re comfortable backing Marzo at 8/1 to get the job done on Saturday. Marzo doesn’t even take a step up in class as the 5-year-old Medaglia d’Oro gelding has raced in graded races since last October. We just hope the Maker runner keeps the juicy morning line odds.

Barclay Tagg, Tiz the Law’s trainer, can pull off the big upset with Highland Sky. The 15/1 on the morning line runner should get a nice setup. Also, Sky has a win at this tricky distance.

Todd Pletcher puts the saddle on 12/1 on the morning line Pillar Mountain. The 5-year-old horse could produce a top effort. The last time John Velazquez was on his back, Pillar ran well enough to finish fifth in the Grade 1 Sword Dancer Invitational.

Win: Marzo
Place: Highland Sky
Show: Pillar Mountain
