Churchill Downs runs the Grade 3 Chicago Stakes, Belmont Park showcases 3 year old fillies in the Grade 2 Mother Goose, and at Thistledown, 3 year olds run in the Grade 3 Ohio Derby. Horse Racing Odds & Picks for June 25th
Monmouth Park – Saturday, June 25
- Goldwood Stakes – 5 ½ furlongs turf – fillies & mares 3 & up
The second running of the Goldwood Stakes at Monmouth Park will showcase some of North America’s most talented filly and mare sprinters. Last year, Caravel won.
The Brad Cox trained 5-year-old mare remains active. If Caravel’s connections believe they can pick up a paycheck for limited work, expect Cox to enter Caravel. If that happens, everyone else is likely to be running for second place.
Churchill Downs – Saturday, June 25
- Grade 3 Chicago Stakes – 7 furlongs dirt – fillies & mares 3 & up
Cox will saddle Lady Rocket to run in the Chicago Stakes. Two races back, Lady Rocket finished fourth in the Grade 1 Madison. In her last, the Cox trainee finished third in the Grade 2 Ruffian.
Lady Rocket’s top competition figures to come from Grade 3 Winning Colors winner Sconsin. The Greg Foley trained runner has won her last two. Bell’s the One beat Lady Rocket when finishing second in the Grade 1 Madison two races ago.
In her last, Bell finished fourth in the Grade 1 Derby City Distaff. She’ll attract action. So will Bayerness, who like Sconsin has also won two straight.
Belmont Park – Saturday, June 25
- Wild Applause Stakes – 1 mile turf – 3 year old fillies
The non-graded Wild Applause Stakes is often one of the most competitive events during Belmont Park’s late spring and early summer meet.
In 2020, Blowout finished ahead of Nova Sol and Seek and Destroy. Last year, Runaway Rumor beat Minaun and Nevisian Surprise. There are few races exclusive to 3 year old filly grass runners. Expect a full field and don’t settle on a short price.
- Grade 2 Mother Goose Stakes – 1 1/16 miles dirt – 3 year old fillies
Connections for eight fillies plan on running in the Grade 2 Mother Goose. Among the eight, two figure to attract the most action, Juju’s Map trained by Brad Cox and Todd Pletcher trained Shahama.
If you don’t like the likely chalks, there are plenty of other ways to go in this race. Republique is undefeated in two races, Nostalgic won the Grade 3 Gazelle, Gerrymander comes from the Chad Brown barn, Pletcher trains Favor, and Radio Days finished third in the Grade 2 Black-eyed Susans.
Thistledown – Saturday, June 25
- Grade 3 Ohio Derby – 1 1/8 miles dirt – 3 year olds
Three well-regarded 3 year olds have committed to the Ohio Derby. Saffie Joseph Jr. puts the saddle on the likely chalk, White Abbario.
The Grade 1 Florida Derby winner had no shot in the Kentucky Derby. The 1 1/8 miles is right up Abbario’s alley. Also, the field is much lighter.
Kuchar is a talented front runner from the Rodolphe Brissett barn. Brissett thought about running Kuchar in the Belmont Stakes. The Uncle Mo sired colt has a much better shot at winning the Ohio Derby than he would have had at winning the Belmont.
Brad Cox trained Tawny Port ran great in the Kentucky Derby, finishing seventh. Tawny has come around for sure. If the Cox runner offers overlay odds, consider.
