2022 Top Stakes to Bet On: G1 Pacific Classic, and 5 Other Races Highlights Weekend

On Saturday, Del Mar runs three significant graded races, including the most important race of their summer meet, the Grade 1 Pacific Classic. Saratoga runs a couple of key graded events as well, the Grade 2 Flower Bowl and the Grade 1 Jockey Club Gold Cup. Horse Racing Odds, Picks, and Betting Analysis | August 29th Edition

Saratoga | Saturday, Sep. 3

  • Grade 2 Flower Bowl Invitational – 1 3/8 miles turf – 4 year old fillies & mares

Six runners have already confirmed for the Flower Bowl. Bill Mott trained War Like Goddess should go off the favorite. Chad Brown puts the saddle on Virginia Joy. 

Other runners include Hendy Woods from the Mark Casse barn, Shug McGaughey trained Flanigan’s Cove, Temple City Terror, and Coastana. 

  • Grade 1 Jockey Club Gold Cup – 1 ¼ miles dirt – 3 year olds & up

Expect a full field to line up for the Jockey Club Gold Cup. Todd Pletcher plans on saddling four: Untreated, Keepmeinmind, American  Revolution, and Dynamic One.

Danny Gargan will send out Tax. Shug has a runner with First Captain. Other entrants include Victor Barboza Jr. trained Brooklyn Strong, Bill Mott runner Olympiad, Informative, and Chess Chief.  

Del Mar | Saturday, Sep. 3

  • Grade 2 Del Mar Derby – 1 1/8 miles turf – 3 year old colts

The Del Mar Derby will attract at least seven runners. Slow Down Andy, from the Doug O’Neil barn, should attract plenty of action.

Ron Ellis puts the saddle on War At Sea and Peter Miller will send out Perfect Flight. Il Bellator, Barsabas, Unconquerable Keen, and Dandy Warhol should also run.   

  • Grade 2 Del Mar Handicap – 1 3/8 miles turf – 3 year olds and up

Connections for six runners plan on entering the Del Mar Handicap starting gate. Trainer Mike McCarthy hopes to saddle a couple of equines, Avenue and likely chalk Masterpiece.

Trainer Phil D’Amato puts the saddle on Masteroffoxhounds. John Sadlers plans on running Heywoods Beach and Neil Drysdale will enter San Juan Capistrano winner Breakpoint. Leonard Powell trained Dicey Mo Chara will also run.   

  • Grade 1 Pacific Classic – 1 ¼ miles dirt – 3 year olds and up

At least six horses will run in the Grade 1 Pacific Classic. The headliner, no doubt, is John Sadler trained Flightline. The undefeated son of Tapit won the Grade 1 Malibu and the Grade 1 Metropolitan in his last couple.

Dubai World Cup winner Country Grammar and San Diego Handicap winner Royal Ship will attract action. Richard Mandella, Royal Ship’s trainer, also sends out Extra Hope. Rivals Stilleto Boy, the Santa Anita Handicap winner, and Express Train will also run. 

Saratoga | Sunday, Sep. 4

  • Grade 1 Spinaway – 7 furlongs dirt – 2 year old fillies

Todd Pletcher trained last out maiden winner Kaling leads a field of at least seven fillies in the Grade 1 Spinaway. Kaling should go off the favorite.

Aunt Shirley, Naughty Gal, Sabra Stuff, Leave No Trace, and Just Cindy will also run. Mark Casse plans on entering 2-time winner Wonder Wheel. The Casse runner looks like Kaling’s top competition.
