Top Stakes Races for the Week
- When: Friday, June 3 – Saturday, June 4
Penn National – Friday, June 3
- Grade 2 Penn Mile – 1 mile turf – 3 year olds
Todd Pletcher trained Annapolis, the Grade 3 Pilgrim winner, should garner the most action. Annapolis will face at least seven other runners: Wow Whata Summer, Uncaptured Spirit, Ohtwoohthreefive, Noneedtoworry, Witty, Red Danger, and Fort Washington.
Churchill Downs – Saturday, Jun 4
- Grade 3 Regret – 1 1/8 miles turf – 3 year old fillies
Five of North America’s top trainers will saddle horses for the Grade 3 Regret. Ian Wilkes, who is having a terrific Churchill Downs meet, sends Walkathon to the race. Walkathon has won two straight. Claude McGaughey puts the saddle on Skims, which finished third in the Appalachian in her last. Keith Desormeaux saddles Candy Raid while Chad Brown plans on running McKulick. Todd Pletcher will enter Beside Herself.
- Grade 3 Arlington – 1 1/16 miles turf – 4 year olds and up
Brian Lynch will saddle a couple for the Arlington. Admission Office and Gray’s Fable will both attract action. Bill Mott trained Floriform and Like the King from the Mark Casse barn should also run.
Of the two Lynch runners, Gray’s Fable should boast the most action. The 7-year-old gelding is in decent form, having finished fourth in the Grade 3 Appleton in April and winning the Opening Verse stakes in May. Floriform won an allowance in his last. So even if only one or two others join the field, the Arlington should be a competitive race.
Belmont – Saturday, Jun 4
- Grade 2 Pennine Ridge – 1 1/8 miles turf – 3 year olds
In the Grade 2 Pennine Ridge on Saturday, it’s going to be tough to beat a Chad Brown horse. Chad will saddle at least three runners.
Napoleonic War is 3-of-4 and heads into the Pennine Ridge after an allowance victory. The War Front sired colt should go off second choice behind undefeated Unanimous Consent. Credit Event is Brown’s longshot runner.
Sired by Not This Time, Credit Event finished tenth in it’s last. Others that should enter the starting gate include Cristophe Clement trained Elizar and Grade 3 Pilgrim third-place finisher Limited Liability.
Santa Anita – Saturday, Jun 4
- Grade 3 Desert Stormer – 6 furlongs dirt – 3 year old & 4 year old fillies
Connections for seven equines have confirmed they will enter the Grade 3 Desert Stormer. Mark Glatt will saddle two, Ironic Twist and Grade 1 Del Mar Debutante finisher Dance To The Music.
Steve Miyadi goes with Becca Taylor. Becca won her first six races. She finished second behind Eddie’s New Dream in the Irish O’Brien in her last. Paul D’Amato trained Elm Drive, Lady Mystify from the Peter Eurton barn, and Samurai Charm will also run.
Pay attention to Dynasty Of Her Own. Jonathan Wong is an underrated trainer and the daughter of Shanghai Bobby finished third in the Grade 2 Las Flores behind Edgeway and Private Mission in March.
