Beyond Gaming vs Unicorns of Love
- When: Tuesday, October 5 – 15:00 GMT
Beyond Gaming enter the 2021 LoL World Championship Play-In stage with high expectations as the LoL Pacific Championship Series (PCS) runners-up. Even though PCS is considered weaker than any of the four major regions, PSG Talon’s success at the 2021 Mid-Season invitational proved that PCS teams should not be underestimated.
If PSG Talon’s deep run at the 2021 MSI is any indication, Beyond Gaming should be respected, knowing that they have beaten PSG Talon in the upper bracket finals of the 2021 PCS Summer Playoffs. Beyond Gaming eventually lost the title to PSG Talon, albeit with a close five-map series (2-3).
Unicorns of Love have been LoL Continental League’s (LCL) representatives at the LoL Worlds for years now. Although their run through the 2020 LoL Worlds wasn’t awe-inspiring, the CIS LoL teams can be challenging to deal with due to their aggressive style of play and “all or nothing” mentality.
Despite Unicorns of Love’s impressive 12-2 run through the LCL 2021 Summer regular season, they have lost their opening round of the playoffs against CrowCrow (1-3), dropped two maps against One Breath gaming in the lower bracket finals, and needed five maps to edge past CrowCrow (3-2) in the finals.
Whether Unicorns of Love have become weaker or has the LCL become stronger is up to debate. But based on what we’ve seen from UoL on the Rift, they’re not what they used to be.
These best-of-one (Bo1) series are incredibly unpredictable, but there is no denying that Beyond Gaming are a fundamentally stronger team.
Prediction: Beyond Gaming to win
Cloud9 vs DetonatioN FocusMe
- When: Tuesday, October 5 – 17:00 GMT
Everyone will favor Cloud9 for this bout since they, unlike DetonatioN FocusMe, hail from a major region. However, we don’t believe Cloud9 are as good as the odds suggest.
Even though Cloud9 field a stacked roster, consistency hasn’t been their strong suit this season, which could be a problem when faced with an unknown opponent in a Bo1 setting. What’s more, it’s not like Japanese LoL teams are particularly weak.
Obviously, you wouldn’t expect a Japanese LoL League (LJL) team to win the World Championship, but realistically, you wouldn’t expect an LoL Championship Series (LCS) team to do so either.
Unless you’ve been closely following the Japanese league, it’s hard to say how good DetonatioN FocusMe are; however; it’s easy to see that they have been – besides Rascal Jester – by far the strongest team in the region. They finished the regular season with 11-3 and won the title by dropping only two maps from 11 played.
DFM also demolished Rascal Jester (3-0) in the finals, so they’re clearly the top team from their region.
In a perfect world, Cloud9 win, but this will be their first meeting with DFM, and it doesn’t help that the game is a Bo1. The expectations put on Cloud9 are high since they can’t afford to lose, which can only work against them, and I don’t believe they have the mental fortitude to deal with the pressure.
Cloud9 should win, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they choke.
Prediction: Detonation FocusMe to win
