Heading into the men’s Olympic basketball tournament, the consensus was that the United States would roll to the gold medal without breaking too much of a sweat.
While most believe that the US is still going to win the gold, they have had moments, most notably in the warm-up games, where they did not look like a champion.
My Analysis
Still, it’s what you do in the tournament that matters, and they have done enough to get to the knockout phase alongside 7 other teams, all of whom are dreaming of standing on the medal podium.
4 teams will see that dream end on Tuesday, but who will win and who will crash out. Let’s take a look.
^Germany -333 vs Greece +269
Tuesday, Aug 6 at 5:00 AM EST | The Germans rolled through the group stage, winning all 3 games, to easily take the top spot and get themselves a quarterfinal matchup against a team that had a much tougher go of things.
Greece nabbed one of the best 3rd place finisher spots in the quarterfinals, with the consensus being that it is basically delaying the inevitable.
They have stayed alive thanks to Giannis, who has been immense in this tournament, but he needs help if Greece is to win as an 8-point underdog.
I don’t see a way they win, but they might just cover.

Serbia -294 vs Australia +242
Tuesday, Aug 6 at 8:30 AM EST | Despite being in the same group as the United States, Serbia kept it close, finishing just 1 point behind the tournament favorites.
They looked solid in the group stage and are very much in the conversation for a medal. Serbia comes into this one as a 7-point favorite against the Aussies.
Australia finished just ahead of Greece in the group stage to land one of the automatic spots in the quarterfinal, but this is probably as good as they can hope for.
I like Serbia to win and cover the spread in this one.
^France +269 vs Canada -333
Tuesday, Aug 6 at 12:00 PM EST | When the draw was made for the group stage of the tournament, Group A was quickly dubbed as the group of death.
Canada seemed to shrug that notion off, though, tearing through this part of the tournament with 3 straight wins.
With that in mind, it should not be a surprise that they are 7 ½ point favorites here.
They don’t have an easy path to the final four, though, as it is never easy to play the host nation at any stage of the tournament.
France finished 2nd in their group, but only scoring 2 more points than they surrendered.
I think they are in real trouble against a very strong Canada team.
^Brazil vs United States
Tuesday, Aug 6 at 3:30 PM EST | You never want to immediately write a team off before a game is played, but Brazil must feel like David set to go against Goliath.
Despite suggestions that the US might not be ready to compete at this tournament, they have put up when it mattered, cruising to victory in all 3 of their group stage games.
Brazil managed just 1 win and had to settle for one of the 3rd place slots in the knockout stage.
They come in as a 27-point underdog, and wile the US will win, are they going to really go all out to cover the spread?
