Betting On the NASCAR Toyota/Save Mart 350: A Look at the Favorites in Sonoma Raceway

We are now basically at the midway point of the NASCAR season, which means it’s time to get serious about the race for playoff spots.

Will it be one of those guys taking the checkered flag, or will we see something of ab upset?

My Cup Series Analysis

The next couple of months are going to be critical for every driver, even for those who are currently sitting at the top, as those drivers will definitely have a bit of an advantage through the opening couple of rounds if they can stay where they are now. This weekend, the action shifts to Sonoma for the next race on the Cup Series calendar, which is the Toyota/Save Mart 350. There are some familiar names among the favorites to win this one. Let’s take a look at the top NASCAR odds.

Martin Truex Jr. NASCAR Odds +560

As good as Truex Jr. has been during his time with the Cup Series, this still feels like a bit of a risky bet at the moment. He is still looking for his first win of the season and has failed to crack the top 10 over the last 3 races. One thing that he has done this year is lead a lot of laps, which is why he is still sitting in 4th overall in the driver standings. There is a sense, though, that he could use a big run this weekend, and this might well be the track where he gets it, as he won this race in Sonoma last season. Still, I’d be more about playing him in the top 10 than to win.

Kyle Larson NASCAR Odds +750

Larson is currently sitting in 2nd overall, but he might actually be at the top has he not withdrawn from a Cup Series race a couple of weeks ago in favor of racing in the Indianapolis 500. Still, he is always a threat to win as he goes looking for his 3rd victory of the season. His return to the Cup Series last weekend saw him finish in 8th at Gateway, and I think we might expect better from him this coming Sunday. He finished in the top 10 in this race last year, but Larson also won at Sonoma in his championship winning season.

Christopher Bell NASCAR Odds +770

There are a lot of things to like about what Bell has done this season, which include a pair of wins and 6 stage wins. Despite those successes, he is still down in the #8 spot in the overall driver standings, which should give you some idea of just how tight things are in the battle for the Cup Series Championship this season. Bell can make a move in the right direction with a win in Sonoma, a track where he finished 8th last season. I think we might see better this weekend, which could mean a top 5 finish.

William Byron NASCAR Odds +780

Byron got off to a fantastic start this season, picking up 3 wins through the opening 8 races, and while he has not won since, he is still picking up points and staying in the top 5 in the driver standings. If he is to make a serious run at the championship this season, Byron is going to need to get back to winning ways, but I’m not so sure that happens this weekend in Sonoma. There is little in his previous runs on this track to suggest he will win on Sunday.

2023 Toyota/Save Mart 350

We aways expect some drama over the course of an average NASCAR Cup Series season, but it does seem as though the 2023 season is delivering more than its fair share. The regular season is rolling along at a fair clip, with the playoffs now not that far in the distance. The battle for those coveted 16 spots is beginning to heat up, with one driver in particular in need of a strong finish to get one of those spots. We are talking about Chase Elliot, but we will delve a little deeper into his situation in just a moment. This Sunday, the drivers will be in Sonoma for the Toyota Save Mart 350, with valuable points on the line. Let’s take a look at some of the drivers the bookies like this weekend.

Tyler Reddick

NASCAR Betting Pick: +480

After 15 races this season, Reddick finds himself sitting in 10th overall, which may make you wonder why he is in as the favorite here. The simple explanation is that his lone win this season came on a road course at the Circuit of the Americas, and the Sonoma race has a similar road course layout. Still not convinced. Then how about the fact that 2 of his 3 wins in the 2022 season also came on road courses. This is a format that he really seems to enjoy, so I would at least be looking at him for a top 5 finish in Sonoma.

Kyle Larson

NASCAR Betting Pick: +520

Larson is another driver who has shown an ability to deliver the goods when racing on a road course, which includes picking up a win at Sonoma in his Cup Series Championship winning year in 2021. Larson always seems to be a solid bet when racing on a road course, but there is also a reason for concern if you are considering wagering on him this weekend. His form has been a little up and down all season long, but in fairness, he does also have a couple of wins to his name, so it’s not all bad. A 4th place finish last weekend might be a sign that he is about to have a good run of form.

Chase Elliott

NASCAR Betting Pick: +530

To say that it has been a trying season for 2020 champion Chase Elliott is perhaps putting things rather mildly. He had barely returned from a 6-week layoff due to injury before receiving a 1-race suspension for his part in a crash. If there is a silver lining, it’s that NASCAR has given him a playoff waiver that will allow him to compete despite missing races. That said, he still needs to drive his way into the postseason. Elliott is also great on road courses, so perhaps he can get the win that will put him right in the playoff picture.

William Byron

NASCAR Betting Pick: +920

Last season proved to be something of a breakout year for Byron, who ended up 6th overall when all was said and done. This season promises to be better yet, as he has already surpassed his 2022 win total (2) by taking 3 checkered flags in 2023. That great form has him sitting 2nd overall in the driver standings and $ in the projected playoff standings. A road course is a little different, but given the form that Byron is in right now, it’s tough to totally rule him out.
