The man had as good of a season as imaginable without a Cup victory. Although Hendrick gets Elliott back from his injury-plagued 2023, William Byron is the top choice at NASCAR’s best constructor to score the win.

The defending champion is good enough to make it two straight titles. Ryan Blaney didn’t just win the Cup; he won the Cup as an underdog.

Often, when a NASCAR driver and crew get it together, they keep it together. We have no problem siding with Blaney if you believe he lifts the hardware in 2024 the way he did in 2023.

Fourth Place: Kyle Larson

The 2024 favorite was also the 2023 chalk. Kyle Larson won just 4 races this past season. However, 2 of his wins came during the NASCAR Cup Playoff.

Larson couldn’t get by Blaney at Phoenix. He did finish second on the standings. Like teammate William Byron, Larson will be motivated to score a NASCAR Cup this season.

But the odds are worse than they are for Blaney or Byron. Also, Larson doesn’t seem to close the deal when it matters most. Kyle is a play against this far out before NASCAR’s first race in February.

NASCAR has come a long way in 75 years. Today, the stock car racing circuit is quite a far cry from its days when bootleggers would improve their cars so that they were able to evade the police and get their products through. 

2023 is NASCAR’s diamond season, and they’re pulling out all the stops for it. Fan-favorite tracks like Daytona International Speedway and Bristol Motor Speedway will host multiple races throughout the calendar. The series also returns to the Chicago market with a Chicago street race that utilizes the scenery of the Chicago lakefront and Buckingham Fountain. 

We’re eight races into the season, and it looks like it’ll be a fantastic race to the playoffs in September. Let’s look back at the races so far this season and some appealing bets for NASCAR bettors the rest of the way.

The Diamond Season: The Cup Series Season So Far

The competition for the points title is thick so far. We’re eight races into the season, with only one repeat winner. The top four drivers in the standings points are all separated by less than 40 points. 

There has also been an even distribution of pole positions wins among drivers this year. Of the five points races so far, two poles have been won by Joey Logano, one by Kyle Larson, and one by Alex Bowman. With such a stacked field of drivers, it’s safe to expect these trends will continue as the rest of the season plays out. 

Compelling Wagering Narratives

With another five months of points races until the playoffs, there are some compelling narratives that NASCAR bettors could take to the window to lock in some good odds on this year’s Cup Winner. 

Kevin Harvick stands out from a narrative perspective. Before the season, Harvick announced that this would be his last Cup Series season. Harvick’s resume is impressive – he’s won two Busch Series (now Xfinity Series) championships, the 2014 Cup Series championship, and is currently the longest-tenured driver in the NASCAR series. He’s at +1400 to win the Cup Series championship in his last season and is off to a strong start with three top-fives and five top-ten finishes so far. 

Another driver to watch is William Byron, who is going off at +800. Byron won two races back-to-back in March in Las Vegas and Phoenix. If he can achieve a little more consistency with top-five and top-ten finishes, Byron could very well be a threat to win the Championship. 

For those interested in a longer-odds favorite, Alex Bowman is going off at +2500. A controversial driver with a bad reputation amongst other Cup competitors, he’s had three top-five finishes and six top-ten finishes this year. He sits in 11th in points right now. With a few more efforts to get into the top-five, Bowman could easily vault his way into contention for the title.

2023 NASCAR Cup Series Championship Before the Start of the Season | Odds To Win

Hard as it may seem to believe, we are now only a week away from seeing NASCAR drivers back on the track. Next weekend will see the Clash at the Coliseum, which is essentially a preseason race. After that, we have a pair of duel races at Daytona before getting to the Daytona 500 on February 19. With all of that in mind, you don’t have a lot of time to get your wagers for the Cup Series Championship posted before the season begins and the odds begin to change, oftentimes in the wrong direction. There are some very familiar names in at the top of the bookies board as we look ahead to the 2023 NASCAR season, so let’s take a look at some of the current NASCAR Championship odds favorites, keeping in mind that these odds can and will change.

Chase Elliott (+550)

In terms of consistency, there really isn’t a better bet than Chase Elliott. He is on a run that has seen him make it all the way to the final four in each of the last 3 seasons. He win his lone championship in 2020, and then followed that up by finishing 4th in each of the last 2 seasons. Elliott has a way of racking up points and staying among the leaders in just about every race, and if he can turn more of those close calls into wins, there is no reason why he can’t add another championship to his resume in 2023.

Kyle Larson (+600)

You could argue that Larson had a disappointing season in 2022, but part of that has to be because he set the bar so high when he won it all the year prior. Larson was an absolute beast in 2022, basically taking the lead early and never looking back. He made it to the Round of 8 last year, but he ended up finishing 7th overall and was never really able to get a good, consistent run of form going throughout the season. The pressure is off a little this time around, so we might see a bounce back year for Larson.

Denny Hamlin (+800)

We talked about consistency when discussing Chase Elliott, and the same rules very much apply for Hamlin. He may be the best driver in the Cup Series never to have won a championship. He has, though, come very close on several occasions and is coming off a 2022 season th at saw him finish 5th overall. All of that suggests he is a bit of a risky bet to win the Cup Series, but given that he always seems to be in the mix, the law of averages suggests that he might be able to get over the top just once.

Ryan Blaney (+1000)

If anyone is due for a breakout season, it might well be Ryan Blaney, and judging by these odds, the bookies seem to agree. Over the past 4 seasons, Blaney has finished in the top 10 overall, with his lack of wins hurting his ability to get to the final four. He went through the entire season in 2022 without taking a checkered flag, but he did close things out with back-to-back podium finishes. Might that be a sign that he is ready to come out hot in 2023.
