3. Justin Allgaier | 2058 points
4. Sam Mayer | 2052 points

My NASCAR Xfinity Series Drive for the Cure 250 Analysis

Sammy Smith won last weekend and has punched his ticket into the next round, so he is safe. The same cannot be said for the other drivers, especially the 4 who are currently on the bubble.

It may come as a surprise to learn that Justin Allgaier is in that group, given that he has been consistently good over the years, albeit without ever winning a championship.

He needs a big run this weekend, but you can also say that about every driver still alive, so let’s take a look at the current favorites for the Drive for the Cure 250.

Shane Van Gisbergen -127

Any time you have a NASCAR race taking place on a road course, there are several drivers that suddenly become the favorites to win.

That is very much the case with Shane Van Gisbergen, as he seems to save his best for the road races.

He has won 3 times in the Xfinity Series this season, with each of those victories coming on road courses.

With that in mind, it is no real surprise that he is in as the clear favorite for this one.

It may be coming at the perfect time, too, as Van Gisbergen is currently on the bubble. I think he moves on with a top 3 finish.

AJ Allmendinger +280

While Van Gisbergen is quite rightly the overwhelming favorite to win this weekend, I like looking for a driver that might get the win at better odds.

In my mind, Allmendinger fits the bill perfectly. Sure, we have yet to see Allmendinger pick up a checkered flag this season, this is a race where he has a very solid history.

He did not race in this one last season, but prior to that, he won this race in 4 straight seasons.

That record, combined with these odds, makes him a great winning pick for me.

Justin Allgaier +1050

When you look at the drop-off in odds here, it is clear that the bookies seem to think that this is a 2-horse race.

That is no guarantee that things will play out as expected, especially when we are in the final race before the cut, and you have drivers that are desperate for points.

As we mentioned at the top of this piece, Allgaier is very much in desperation mode, as he is currently sitting below the cut line.

He did not have a great run in this race last season, but I think he can do enough to get into the top 5.

^

Sam Mayer +1025

We are seeing a common theme among the favorites for this race in that we have several drivers sitting on the bubble.

Mayer is another one that would miss out on the Round of 8 if the cut was made today.

The good news is that he has one more shot to get the points required to move on, and the bookies seem to believe that he can be in the mix.

He won this race last season, so he might well be worth looking at for a top 3 finish.

One of the biggest races of the Xfinity Series season is set to go on Saturday afternoon with the running of the Drive for the Cure 250. There have already been a couple of spots taken in the next round, so there are now just 6 up for grabs this weekend. That adds to the pressure that already exists in the playoffs and makes things very difficult for the drivers who are not assured of their spot in the final 8. For fans, this is where things really start to get fun, but who will come away with the win in this one? Let’s take a look at the Xfinity betting odds and the current top 4 in the driver standings.

John H. Nemechek

Given how things have gone this season, we probably should not be surprised that Nemechek has already made it into the Round of 8 with a win in Texas last weekend. He has now won in each round of the playoffs and has to be seen as the man to beat as we head down into the final few races of the season. Nemechek has won 6 races in total this season and always seems to be in the mix even when he isn’t winning. Over the past 4 races, he has not been outside of the top 3, so he is in the sort of form that you would expect from a champion. His last race at Roval came in 2019, when he finished 7th. Expect better on Saturday.

Justin Allgaier

Id this finally going to be the season when Allgaier wins that elusive Xfinity Series Championship? He has been so close on so many occasions in the past, and you certainly feel as though he deserves some time in the spotlight. Allgaier won the opening race in the Round of 12, so he too is assured a spot in the final 8. The question now is whether he can win again this weekend. He finished 5th in this race last season, and while the pressure is off this weekend, I think we can expect another top 5 finish on Saturday.

Cole Custer

Sitting in the #3 spot at the moment, Custer looks to be a lock for the Round of 8, but you never want to take anything for granted. While he has not been winning of late, Custer has been consistent, finishing in the top 10 in 6 of the last 7 races. You do feel, though, that if he is to go on and win the championship, he is going to need to take a checkered flag or two in the final batch of races. One thing worth noting is that both of his wins this season came on a road course, which might well make him the favorite this weekend at Roval.

Austin Hill

Last year, Hill had his first full season in the Xfinity Series, making it to the Round of 8 before going out at that point and finishing 6th overall. He is on pace to make it into that round again, but I’m sure he has designs on something better this time around. This track has not been kind to him over the years, though, so I’m not so sure I would even risk taking him for a top 5 finish, never mind an outright win.
