NBA News & Rumors: Atlanta Hawks Head Coach Fired

Written by on March 2, 2021

As the calendar rolls over into the month of March, there is a lot going on in the NBA. The trade deadline is now just a couple of weeks away and the All-Star Game is almost upon us. With the trade deadline so close, most of the news and rumors swirling around the NBA is about players potentially making a move to a new team. The contenders will be looking to add a piece or two that will take them over the top, while the teams who are totally out of it might well be dumping salary as they head towards a rebuild. Let’s take a quick look at what’s making news in the NBA this week so you can keep betting against their NBA odds.

2021 NBA Betting News & Rumors March 2nd Edition

An unpleasant piece of business took place on Monday, with the Atlanta Hawks firing head coach Lloyd Pierce. The front office didn’t go into too much detail on why they decided to fire Pierce, simply saying that the team had not lived up to expectations. The Hawks wasted no time in making Nate McMillan their interim head coach. Whether he gets the job on a full-time basis remains to be seen, as the Hawks brass would not commit to making the hiring a permanent one at this time. We also don’t know how long McMillan will be in the position before a final decision is made.

Unfortunately, we are beginning to see COVID have an impact on the schedule, with the Toronto Raptors the latest to be impacted by the virus. The raptors have their game against Chicago this past weekend postponed because they were unable to field 8 players. They continue to have issues and have now seen their Tuesday game against the Detroit Pistons potentially moved to Wednesday. If they are able to go on Wednesday, then the Raptors and the Pistons will close out their first half with back-to-back games.

Over the past few weeks, we have been talking about potential moves in free agency. One name that was mentioned was Victor Oladipo of the Houston Rockets. The general consensus was that Oladipo was all about taking a run at free agency, but the Rockets allegedly tried to talk him into staying by offering him a 2-year $45.2 million extension. It seems that Oladipo is looking for a long-term deal, as well as a nice chunk of change, so the Rockets now have a decision to make before the March 25 trade deadline. Do they want to commit to Oladipo in the long term?

All is not well in Minnesota, as you can clearly see by the Timberwolves record. A coaching change has done little to help, with the T-Wolves losing all 4 games that new head coach Chris Finch has taken charge of. There is a lot of frustration in Minnesota, with Ricky Rubio perhaps the most vocal of the bunch. While not directly blaming Finch, Rubio us not happy with the direction that the team is headed. Rubio is trying to remain positive, hoping that the week off for the All-Star Game will help, but how much longer before things get really ugly in Minnesota.
