Olympic Golf Gold Medal Winning Favorites

There is always a lot of excitement in the days leading up to the Olympic Games, but the Rio games may have more buzz than usual. That is because golf is back after a 112-year absence from the Games. While the top 4 players in the world have all opted to sit this one out, there is still a very strong field of 60 who will be taking part. The golfing event in Rio will be similar to a regular PGA event in that it will be contested over 4 rounds, with stroke play deciding the winner. The big difference here is that there will be no cut after the second round, which means that all 60 players will be in it from start to finish. A total of 40 different nations will be represented in the tournament, and while each nation was allowed 4 entries, it is only the US who will be bringing a full contingent. Does that give them an edge in the online sports betting odds? We will have to wait and see. Let’s take a look at a few players who might be worth a wager in Olympic Games golf.

Here’s a Closer Look At The Olympic Golf Gold Medal Winning Favorites

The Potential Favorite

The highest ranked golfer among the competing field is Henrik Stenson of Sweden, who currently sits number 5. He has had a magnificent year so far, which was highlighted by a win at Royal Troon in the British Open. He is coming off a 7th place tie at the PGA Championship, and really has to be considered the favorite here. Of the competing players, Stenson also has the best scoring average on the tour, which is just one more reason why he has to be considered the man to beat in Rio.

The Smart Pick

The weather in Rio at this time of year tends to be hot and muggy, which may present a challenge for some players. This is why I would look at a player who is perhaps more accustomed than most to dealing with the elements. I like Sergio Garcia from Spain in these conditions. Garcia is in the top 10 in the PGA rankings, and will be looking to make amends after missing the cut at the PGA Championship. It has been a good year for Sergio, and he routinely finds himself among the leaders in every tournament he plays. With the top 4 staying home, he has a legitimate shot at taking gold.

The Olympic Golf Longshot Pick

I actually have a couple of players that I like at longer odds in this tournament, but I am definitely leaning one way more than the other. Justin Rose of Great Britain is quietly putting together a very good year, and should be among the leading pack. My official longshot pick, though, is going to be Matt Kuchar of the US. The reason why Kuchar stands out for me is because of his top 10 ranking in average scoring. With no cut in place for this event, 3 solid rounds might well be enough to get the win. If Kuchar remains steady throughout, he is going to challenge for gold.
