2020 Tokyo Olympics Men’s Baseball Tournament: Third-Place and Finals Matches To Bet On

South Korea vs Dominican Republic – Olympics Baseball Men’s Third-Place Match

  • When: Saturday, August 7

South Korea lost to both Japan (2-5) and the USA (2-7) in the Olympics’ semi-finals bouts; however, that doesn’t take away from the solid form this team has been showing at this tournament.

South Korea enter this match with a 3-3 record on the tournament, which includes losses against the USA (2-4, 2-7) and Japan (2-5), and wins against Israel (6-5, 11-1) and Dominican Republic (4-3). The latter managed the same 3-3 record in their last six, with wins against Israel (7-6), Mexico (1-0), and Venezuela (8-5), and losses against Japan (3-4), South Korea (3-4), and USA (1-3).

The Asian nation enter this tournament priced as the favorites, which makes a lot of sense. The South Korean national baseball team is filled with some of the biggest stars from the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO), including Hyun-soo Kim and Seung-hwan Oh.

Last time out, the Dominican Republic and South Korea produced a tight affair, and we can expect something similar here. South Korea have a slight edge, as reflected in the baseball betting odds; however, you should not underestimate the Dominican Republic either.

They played well against Japan and the USA earlier last week, and if they can show the same fire here, the Dominican Republic should be able to keep this one close.

Prediction: Dominican Republic +1.5 Runs

USA vs Japan – Olympics Baseball Men’s Gold Medal Match

  • When: Saturday, August 7

Japan and the United States will square off on Saturday for the Olympics gold medal in what promises to be an exciting affair between two of the best baseball teams in the world.

Japan entered the Tokyo Olympics as the highest-rated WBSC men’s baseball team in the world, and they didn’t disappoint. Although former New York Yankees starter Masahiro Tanaka is Japan’s most well-known player on the roster, he is by no means the only standout player.

Japan comprises several elite-level players who compete in Japan’s Nippon Professional Baseball, which is one of the biggest baseball leagues outside of the USA’s MLB. Out of that group of players, it’s hard to look past Munetaka Murakami and last year’s NPB Finals MVP Ryoya Kurihara.

The United States entered the tournament as the third-favorites to win gold, behind Japan and South Korea; however, the Americans soon took over the second-favorite spot, following their opening game of the tournament.

Like Japan, the USA fields excellent players; however, considering most compete in the world’s most popular league, you have to be careful not to overvalue them. It’s easy to get biased and favor one group of players simply because you are more familiar with them.

Regardless, the USA has a nice mix of rising stars and proven veterans, which is exactly what they’ll need to defeat Japan on their home soil and claim the gold medal for themselves. With names such as Simeon Woods Richardson, odd Frazier, Scott Kazmir, and David Robertson on the team, it’s hard to doubt the USA’s chances to shine.

Japan might have a slight edge here, but the USA seem a bit undervalued at odds as high as +165. Alternatively, you can side with the USA on the handicap market.

Prediction: USA to win
