Why France Will Beat Spain in the Olympic Gold Medal Game

France laid down the gauntlet early by dominating the United States 3-0 in a match.

From then on, the French continued to prove they’re the team to beat.

For sure, France has been aided by the home crowd, but home pitch advantage isn’t the main reason France has dominated.

Crystal Palace forward Jean-Phillippe Mateta has scored 4 goals during the tournament.

Mateta has scored at least a goal in France’s last 3 matches.

The 27-year-old, each nation can add 3 players over the age of 23, is destroying defenses.

With Mateta leading the attack, and a defense that has yielded a single goal in 5 matches, France looks close to unbeatable.

France at the 2024 Olympics

  • W – 3-1 vs Egypt
  • W – 1-0 vs Argentina
  • W – 0-3 vs New Zealand
  • W – 1-0 vs Guinea
  • W – 3-0 vs United States

Why Spain Will Beat France in the Olympic Gold Medal Game

The Spanish haven’t dominated the way France has, but El Rojo will start the most talented player in the match.

Spain didn’t have to use the age exemption to add Fermin Lopez to the team.

Lopez, a Barcelona midfielder, is just 21 years old.

Lopez has scored 3 goals in Spain’s last 2 matches.

Since the knockout stage, Lopez has flat out taken over.

He took 5 shots against Japan and scoring 2 goals in the 3-0 victory over Japan.

Then in the semifinal win against Morocco, Lopez got the equalizer after Morocco had taken the lead off a penalty kick.

Lopez plays midfield.

So the direction of the team will depend on Lopez’s cues.

With Lopez dictating Spain’s pace, El Rojo has an excellent shot of getting the upset win.

Spain at the 2024 Olympics

  • W – 1-2 vs Morocco
  • W – 0-3 vs Japan
  • W – 1-3 vs Dominican Republic
  • L – 1-2 vs Egypt
  • W – 1-2 vs Uzbekistan

Final Betting Analysis: El Rojo Upsets the Home Team

France should win this match, but the French have taken on bad teams save for Argentina, which pushed France in a 1-0 French victory.

France is leaning on Mateta’s play.

But although the Crystal Palace player is terrific, he’s not a world class player the way Fermin Lopez is.

The 21 year old has put Spain on his back during the knockout phase and it’s shown.

Lopez is going to control most aspects of the match from his midfield position, which means Spain will have possession and take the more meaningful shots.

Back Spain to upset the French in what should be a terrific gold medal match.

Olympic Soccer Gold Medal Pick: Spain

Sweden vs Germany Women’s Soccer Gold Medal Odds

Previous Betting News

The ‘Bunch of Cowards’ are in the Gold Medal match…and at the expense of two of the top Rio 2016 Olympics women’s soccer favorites. Just after using their ruthlessly efficient defense to beat Team USA on penalties during the quarterfinals of the Rio 2016 Women’s Soccer event, Sweden was at it again in the semifinal, using the same tactic to upset Olympics hosts Brazil via penalties and earning one of the two coveted spots in the Gold Medal match. In the other semifinal game, Germany avenged their 2-1 loss to Canada in the group stages with a clinical 2-0 victory over the same Canadians, setting up a dare-not-miss duel against the Swedish team. Let’s take a sweeping look at this matchup and don’t forget to check our free online sports betting picks at the end of the article.

Here’s a Closer Look At The Sweden vs Germany Women’s Soccer Gold Medal Odds

Where: Maracanã Stadium – Rio De Janeiro, Brazil
When: Friday, August 19, 4:30 p.m. ET
TV: NBCSN
Betting Lines: TBA on our Soccer Betting Odds

Why Bet on Sweden

With back-to-back victories of 4-3 via penalties against USA and Brazil, it goes without saying Sweden’s defense has perfected the art of absorbing pressure, and doing so with professional ease. I mean, this a team that, for example, got outshot 15-2 in the first half against the Brazilians, with the host nation controlling 71 percent of the possession during that frame, yet still ended the half 0-0. Not to mention, both games against USA and Brazil went the full length of 90 munities plus 30 extra time, yet none of these two opponents managed to score a goal against World No. 6-ranked Sweden. Using the same formula to game-manage the Germans should therefore not be a big deal. As a point of concern, though, Sweden’s offense has been average at best, mostly relying on opportunistic goals and penalties, so major improvements will be required from the likes of Lotta Schelin and Stina Blackstenius if Sweden is to have a winning performance over the balanced Germans.

Why Bet on Germany

Ranked No. 2 in the world standings, the Germans come with a lot of pedigree in this game as obvious favorites. In the Olympics, the Germans are also more accomplished than Sweden, with the Germans having won the Bronze Medal in 2000, 2004, 2008. Meanwhile, Sweden’s best finish in the Olympics is when the team came fourth in 2004. All that, however, doesn’t matter much now, as Sweden is at least guaranteed silver, and will be fully motivated to win it all after their stifling defense already got the better of some of the biggest names in the game. Good news, though, for German fans is that their offense has been playing quite formidably, even with the likes of Alexandra Popp, Anja Mittag and Dzsenifer Marozsan not shining as many expected. In the 2-0 win over Canada for instance, Melanie Behringer (who scored the winner in the quarterfinals) came through again for Germany by converting from the penalty spot in the first half, before Sara Däbritz added a spectacular stunner in the second half to insure the team’s win. Meanwhile, despite the fact that the Canadians outshot the Germans in the semis, goalkeeper Almuth Schult and her defense stood their ground to finish the game with a clean sheet. With such a combination of an efficient offense and solid defense, Germany should stand a better chance at emerging victorious in this game.

Sweden vs. Germany Gold Match Pick and Prediction and Picks

Germany is the better team on paper and I doubt if Sweden will be getting a third time lucky in the Gold Match. But after seeing what they did to the Americans and Brazilians, I am really wary of picking against Sweden. My best pick here would therefore be a low-scoring affair with UNDER 2.5 goals. But if I’m hard-press to give my recommended pick, I’d advise that you lean on the seemingly unstoppable Swedes.

Final Score Prediction: Sweden 1, Germany 0.

2020 Tokyo Olympics Betting – Soccer Women’s & Men’s Tournament Gold Medal Games

Olympic Soccer Women’s Gold Medal Game

Canada Vs Sweden

When: Thursday, August 5 at 10:00 pm ET

Canada versus Sweden should be a dynamite match. Let’s start with the Canadians, who pulled off a shocker when they beat the U.S. in the semifinals.

But although many were surprised at how easily Canada beat the United States, the Canadians have played great throughout the tournament. The Canadians show 3 victories and 2 draws in their 5 matches at the Olympics.

The wins, 2-1 against Chile, via penalty kicks versus Brazil, and 1-0 against USA, impress big time. But so do the draws against Japan and Great Britain. Canada has a shot win.

Sweden deserves to be favored, though. The Swedes have won all 5 of their Olympic matches: 3-0 versus the U.S., 4-2 against Australia, 2-0 in a match against New Zealand, 3-1 against Japan, and 1-0 versus Australia again, this time in the semifinals.

The best soccer team in the Olympic Women’s Tournament shouldn’t lose out on the gold medal. Getting by Canada won’t be easy, but the Swedes should continue their magical run to the top spot on the podium.

Soccer Pick: Sweden

Olympic Soccer Men’s Gold Medal Game

Spain Vs Brazil

When: Saturday, August 7 at 7:30 am ET

Both semifinals in the Olympic Men’s Tournament played true to form. Brazil required a penalty shootout to get past Mexico. But the Brazilians, one of the tournament favorites, did get the victory.

The Brazilians now tackle the Spanish, who beat host Japan 1-0. Spain is loaded with European Soccer club players. Brazil has the awesome Richarlison.

Which team will get ahead? It’s tough to go against Spain. The Spanish dominated the Ivory Coast 5-2 to win their quarterfinals match. Leipzig forward Danny Olmo scored a couple of goals. Mikal Oyarzabal, a Real Sociedad player, scored another goal.

But although Spain played great to get past the Ivory Coast, they struggled against Japan. The Spanish knocked out the host nation via a single goal.

Brazil had a tough match against Mexico. However, Richarlison and his mates faced a team that decided to play defense first. The gambit worked for El Tri, who almost pulled off the upset win via penalties.

Spain will play like a club team, which means Brazil could thrive. Richarlison will be the best player on the pitch. The Everton forward will either dominate or set up his teammates for awesome looks. Either way, Brazil is worth backing to repeat their 2016 Rio Olympic gold medal win.

Soccer Pick: Brazil
