Women's Olympic Basketball: Breaking Down Matchday 2 Odds and Favorites

Women’s Olympic Basketball: Breaking Down Matchday 2 Odds and Favorites

As I settle in to write this piece, I am keeping an eye on the remainder of Matchday 1 in the women’s Olympic basketball tournament.

As it currently stands in the Monday games, Nigeria has won against Australia, while Germany rolled to a win over Belgium.

My Analysis

There are two more games still to come, with Canada and France set to meet up, while the tournament favorites, the United States, will open their campaign against Japan.

While we wait for those games, let’s also look ahead to July 31 and August 1 and the next 4 games on the women’s calendar.

We are going to break down those games and hopefully pick some winners.

Puerto Rico vs Spain

Wednesday 5 AM EST | It is worth noting that the odds for these games will not be released until we get fully done with Matchday 1, but we can still try to pick winners.

Spain found themselves in a battle in their opener before eventually beating China by a single point.

Puerto Rico had a rough go of things against Serbia in their opening game of the Olympic tournament, falling 58-55 to Serbia in a game that was perhaps a little closer than expected.

I like Spain to get the win in this one.

China vs Serbia

Wednesday 7:30 AM EST | As mentioned earlier, China came into the Olympics on a losing streak, which they have seen continue after a loss in their opening game.

When a team goes on that type of run, it can be very tough to break out of.

Serbia will be well aware of this and come into this game knowing that they have a shot at moving on with the win after edging out Puerto Rico in their opening game of the tournament.

I have a hard time betting on China given their current form, which has me leaning toward Spain.

Japan vs Germany

Thursday 5 AM EST | Germany came into this tournament on a very decent run of form, with their lone loss in their last 5 games coming at the hands of the United States, which was not totally unexpected.

They won their opening game against Belgium and will be looking to move on with the win here.

Japan will open their Olympic campaign against the US, so expect them to come into this game still looking for their first win.

I like the Germans to come away with the win in this one.

Australia vs Canada

Thursday 7 AM EST | As I write this piece, Canada is currently in action against France in what is proving to be a tight affair.

That is sure to be the toughest game for both teams in the group stage of the Olympics, but that is not to suggest that Australia will be a cakewalk for Canada.

That said, the Aussies are sure to still be reeling after losing their opening game to Nigeria.

They need a win in this one, but I am not so sure if they will get it, as I like Canada to come away with the victory.
