Why Bet on New York?

The Yankees enter on a nine-game winning streak – their game Sunday at home vs. Minnesota was rained out. New York is a season-high 20 games over .500 and their 30-11 (.732) record since 7/6 is the best record in the Majors in that span. New York has won nine straight series and 14 of 15.  It nine-series winning streak is their longest since a nine-series streak from 5/3-6/2/19.

Yankees starting pitchers own a 2.85 ERA in their past 42 starts and have allowed 3R-or-fewer in 37 of those. Hitting-wise, Luke Voit is red hot. He has 11RBI in his last five games, 13RBI in his last seven games and 17RBI in his last 12 games. Voit owns a seven-game hitting streak, batting .500/.536/.936 (13-for-26) with 7R, 3 doubles, 3HR, 13RBI, 1BB and 1HP in that span. He is hitting .341/.426/.512 (14-for-41) with 4 doubles, 1HR, 22RBI, 5BB and 1HP with RISP this season.

Yankees batters are hitting .358/.446/.509 (19-for-53) with 5 doubles, 1HR, 26RBI, 7BB and 2HP with RISP over their last six games. Yankees runners have recorded 31 steals since the All-Star break the most in the majors. They have stolen 31 bases in their past 33 games after just 20 in the first 91.

It’s scheduled to be lefty Jordan Montgomery (4-5, 3.77) on the mound Monday. Montgomery allowed three earned runs over 4 2/3 innings last Tuesday in a no-decision versus the Red Sox in his first start off the COVID list. Montgomery issued two walks and gave up five hits, including a solo home run to Christian Vazquez in the top of the fifth. But he did strike out six and the Yankees ultimately pulled out a 5-3 victory, with the official pitcher win going to reliever Albert Abreu. Montgomery has allowed three runs or less in nine straight starts, posting a 3.14 ERA and 52:18 K:BB through his last 48.2 innings.

Tuesday, it should be lefty Andrew Heaney (8-8, 5.51). Heaney held the Red Sox to one run and two hits in seven innings to pick up a victory last Wednesday. Heaney gave up a homer to Xander Bogaerts, his ninth in four starts for the Yankees, but that was the only damage.

Why Bet on Atlanta?

The Braves are also on a nine-game winning streak and have taken control of the NL East Division. They finished a sweep in Baltimore on Sunday, 3-1. All three Atlanta runs were driven in by players the Braves acquired in trade-deadline deals this year. Jorge Soler and Adam Duvall are helping Atlanta withstand the absence of injured outfielder Ronald Acuña Jr.

Atlanta took advantage of some weaker opponents on this road trip, when it faced Washington and Miami in addition to the Orioles. Now the Braves get the Yankees, Giants and Dodgers in their next eight games. Maybe it’s a bad thing this series is at home considering the Braves have won a franchise-record 13 in a row on the road. That’s also the longest in the majors this season. The last Braves team to go undefeated on a trip to three different cities was the 1992 club, which went 10-0 on a July trip to Chicago, Houston and St. Louis.

The Braves were 7.5 games out of first place and a season-worst five games under .500 at 30-35 after play on June 16. Since the next day, they are 38-21, good for the fifth-best record in baseball. The Braves have led in 18 straight games, the longest stretch of games holding a lead since a 20-game run, August 5-23, 2018. The Atlanta era franchise record is a 29-game stretch, August 20-September 21, 1993.

It’s scheduled to be Huascar Ynoa (4-2, 2.70) on the mound Monday. Ynoa’s return to the Braves’ rotation was a successful one, as he held the Marlins off the scoreboard for 5 1/3 innings in his team’s 2-0 win last Tuesday. Ynoa’s velocity was down just a tick, but he looked like the guy who was off to a great start before fracturing his hand when he punched a dugout bench in May.  Ynoa didn’t allow an extra-base hit while generating nine swinging strikes on 80 total pitches.

Charlie Morton (12-4, 3.47) is scheduled for Tuesday.  Morton struck out nine while allowing two runs in six innings last Wednesday in a win over the Marlins. Morton has turned in quality starts in four straight outings and seven of his last eight.
