Writer’s Picks for the Olympic Soccer Teams to Win

2024 Paris Olympics Women’s Soccer Updated Odds

  • USA +165
  • Spain +230
  • France +260
  • Germany +850
  • Japan +1200
  • Brazil +1600
  • Colombia +1800
  • Australia +2100

The USA is looking as strong as can be.

At the time of this writing, the American’s were on their way to another easy win during the group stage, this time in a 1-0 match against Australia.

The U.S. belted Zambia in their first match.

The second match, though, is the reason to back the Americans.

Sophia Smith scored 2 goals in the United States’ awesome 4-1 victory over Germany.

Beating Zambia is one thing.

Scoring 4 against the Germans is another.

Spain and France should duke it out for second place.

The French beat Colombia but then lost to drone loving Canada in their second group match.

Spain won both of their group matches, 1-0 against Nigeria and 2-0 versus Brazil.

The Spanish have a legit chance of upsetting the U.S., which is why Spain is second on our list and the host nation is third.

  • Gold: USA
  • Silver: Spain
  • Bronze: France

2024 Paris Olympics Men’s Soccer Opening Odds

  • France +230
  • Spain +260
  • Argentina +275
  • Morocco +1100
  • USA +1600
  • Paraguay +2000
  • Egypt +2000
  • Japan +2500

Although Spain lost their final group stage match to the Egyptians, we shouldn’t read too much into it.

El Rojo didn’t have to beat Egypt to move to the second round.

So the loss doesn’t mean much in the long run.

Spain continues to play terrific soccer and will step it up.

But it’s difficult to put Spain ahead of the host nation because France appears to be on a mission.

In 3 matches, France has rolled, dusting the U.S. 3-0, beating Guinea 1-0, and blasting New Zealand 3-0.

France knows they’re the favorites and unlike the men’s handball team is playing with a chip on their collective shoulder.

France gets it done while Spain finishes second.

For the bronze, we’re siding with Japan.

The Japanese won all three of their matches, including beating Paraguay 5-0 in an astonishing beat down over a decent South American squad.

The Japanese are playing like a well oiled machine.

They won’t upset Spain or France but can knockout other contenders like Argentina, Morocco, and the U.S.

  • Gold: France
  • Silver: Spain
  • Bronze: Japan

Olympic Games Paris 2024: Games of the XXXIII Olympiad
Paris, France

2024 Olympic Soccer Calendar

The men and women’s soccer tournaments at the 2024 France Olympics will be similar to the structure of previous events.

For the women, all of the teams are allowed to have full lineups of professional players of any age and it will start July 25 and have the final on Aug. 10.

The men’s tournament is a different story, as this is considered an under 23 tournament.

All qualifying nations are allowed to have three players over the age limit.

The men’s tournament will start on July 24 and play the final on Aug. 9.

Writer’s Picks for the Olympic Soccer Teams to Win

USA Favored to Win Women’s Tournament

Despite the Americans’ struggles over the past few years to keep up with the rest of the soccer world, they have plenty of talent in their lineup.

Notably, the United States is turning the page from its last dominant generation.

The USWNT left Alex Morgan off its roster and will look to push forward with a young roster and new manager Emma Hayes.

The United States is +175 to win the tournament.

The defending World Cup champions, Spain, have the second best odds to win at +200.

Spain has won six of its seven matches in 2024, including a 2-0 win over France.

France (+450), Japan (+750), Australia (+900), Germany (+1000) and Brazil (+1000) round out the top group of contenders.

France is Favorite in Men’s Tournament

There is a very clear top three in the men’s tournament.

Three teams that have been the best on the world stage recently — France (+230), Spain (+260) and Argentina (+275) — are the top three favorites to win the event.

Spain’s senior national team is coming off a big win at Euros.

France has a number of exciting players in the lineup.

Michael Olise, who is heading to Bayern Munich from Crystal Palace, will join with former Crystal Palace teammate Jean-Philippe Mateta.

France will also have an experienced captain in Alexandre Lacazette, who formerly played at Arsenal.

France has qualified for the Olympics 14 times and had its best finish in 1900, when it grabbed the silver medal.

Spain is seeking its first Olympic title since 1992.

La Roja will have a few new faces in the lineup.

Mateo Joseph and Dean Huijsen both switched national teams from England and the Netherlands, respectively.

What to Expect in the Next Olympic Football Events

The United State women’s team has been excellent over the past 15 years, but more recent squads have seen diminishing returns as the program transitions between generations.

The Americans have dominated this tournament historically, winning four of the first five competitions.

However, the United States’ last win came in 2012.

Spain should win the women’s tournament to keep building their program.

On the men’s side, this seems like a good spot to back France.

The French team will be playing at home and has a lineup that is capable of breaking through.

Olympic Soccer: Specials and Medals

One of the most watched Olympic sports isn’t traditional track and field or gymnastics. It’s soccer.

Since the Olympics began to allow three older than 23 professional soccer players to participate on national teams, Olympic Soccer has become one of the most discussed and wagered upon sports at the every four years event.

This year, the Olympic Soccer field, although deep, presents three favorites: France, Spain and Argentina.

Kylian Mbappe for France, Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams for Spain, and Lautaro Martinez for Argentina should start.

Which one of the favorites will get it done in what will be a fantastic Olympic soccer tournament?

Check out soccer odds, analysis, and picks for this year’s gold medal tournament.

Olympic Soccer Group Odds and Picks

Group A

France -330

USA +400

Guinea +900

New Zealand +3000

If you’re France and the United States, who wis likely to replace Gregg Berhalter as head coach and manager before the Olympics, is the second choice at +400, you know you’ve got a great chance to win your group.

Even if Mbappe’s mask hurts his chances of performing at a high level for his squad, France can use one of their three players over 23 exception to add another French star.

France should roll the Americans in what will be a blowout group win.

Also, this year’s Olympics take place in Paris.

So the French national team will be playing in front of their fans.

Group A Pick: France

Group B

Argentina -185

Morocco +175

Ukraine +550

Iraq +4000

Argentina can only add three over 23 players to their roster.

The current roster at the Copa America boasts a single player at 23 or younger, 19 year old Valentin Carboni, which poses a serious issue for the Albiceleste.

What three players will Argentina employ in Paris?

If they choose Messi, that takes out a Nicolas Gonzalez or Juan Alvarez or Lautaro Martinez or Alexis Mac Allister.

Morocco is young. Ilias Akhomach, a Villarreal forward, is 20.

Ismael Sabari, who plays for PSV Eindhoven, is 23.

Oussama El Azzouzi, who plays for Bologna, is also 23.

Youssef En-Nesyri, the Sevilla forward, is 27 and will get one of Morocco’s exceptions.

The Moroccan side is poised to upset the Albiceleste and win Group B.

More of their star players will step onto pitches in France than star players for Argentina.

Back Morocco to get it done.

Group B Pick: Morocco

Group C

Spain -340

Egypt +450

Uzbekistan +650

Dominican Republic +6500

Spain has Group C, the entire tournament to be fair, over a barrel.

Lamine Yamal, Barcelona’s 16 year old rising superstar, is proving he can hang in international tournaments during the 2024 Euro Cup.

Nico Williams is 21, which means both of El Rojo’s starting wingers can step onto the grass at the 2024 Olympics without Spain having to use their three exceptions.

Also, Pedri is 21 and Fermin Lopez is 21.

The Spanish are likely to use one of their exceptions on starting goalie Unai Simon, which gives Spain a massive, huge advantage over everyone else in this group.

Egypt is a solid club. But like the United States versus France, the Egyptians don’t have enough young players to contend for the group title.

El Rojo rolls.

Group C Pick: Spain

Group D

Paraguay +175

Japan +250

Mali +300

Israel +400

Paraguay was terrible in the Copa, losing all 3 of their group matches.

Not only that, but the Paraguyans don’t appear to have many 23 or younger players to fill the roster.

The odds to win Group D makes Paraguay difficult to back.

Japan is a better play to win Group D than Paraguay.

23 year old Keito Nakamura starts for Stade de Reims in Ligue 1.

Nakamura will have some fans in the stands and should help Japan handle Paraguay and Israel.

If you’re looking for slightly more value, consider backing Mali.

The +300 choice to win the group sends 22 year old Atalanta forward El Bilal Toure to the pitch.

21 year old Nene Dorgeles plays for RB Salzburg in the Austrian League.

21 year old Mamady Diambou is also a Salzburg player. Mali is the pick.

Group D Pick: Mali

2024 Olympic Soccer Medal Predictions

France is going to be all out to win the gold, but the French teams doesn’t have as many young stars as both the Spanish and the Moroccans.

France will do enough to beat Mali for the bronze.

The winner between El Rojo and Morocco will be Spain.

Nico Williams and Lamine Yamal make for the best pair of wingers in international soccer.

Both are capable of playing a center striker position, make their own shot, pass to a teammate and fall back and play defense.

Williams and Yamal are taking it to the top European international squads at the EURO Championships.

The pair should easily handle a watered down international competition. Spain wins gold.

Gold: Spain

Silver: Morocco

Bronze: France

Women’s Olympic Soccer Winning Favorites

Previous Betting News

The 2016 Olympic Games in Rio, Brazil will undoubtedly get a big, colorful opening on Friday night, but you don’t have to wait until then to get a little bit of Olympic fever. The action on the men’s and women’s side of the Olympic soccer tournament get underway before the opening ceremonies start. We have already discussed the potential winner of the men’s tournament, so now let’s shift our focus to the women, whose opening set of games will get underway on Wednesday, August 3rd. There is a chance that history might be made at these games, and it will be up to the US ladies to decide whether or not that happens. Let’s take a closer look at the gold medal favorites, as well as their current betting odds.

Women’s Olympic Soccer Winning Favorites

USA (-120)

The American women, who just happen to be the current World Champions, come into this tournament as the form betting favorites. It’s no real surprise given the amount of talent that they have available to them. Carli Lloyd, Ale Morgan, and Hope Solo are just 3 of the many household names that will be taking the field for the US, and they have a squad that is deeper than any other team at this tournament. The US women have a chance to make history by becoming the first female team to win an Olympic gold after winning the World Cup.

Germany (+250)

If any team is going to prevent history being made, it is Germany. The Germans lost to the US in the semi-finals of the World Cup, and will be out looking for revenge. They have lost a number of key players through retirement since that tournament, but have looked very strong in their build-up for this one. They have won their last three outings by a combined score of 19-0, which tells you that they are ready to go for gold.

Brazil (+500)

The Brazilians will have the advantage of playing on home turf, and will also have one of the best players in the world with Marta leading the line. This is a team that has never won a major tournament, but they have made it to the final on 3 separate occasions. They have a legitimate shot at getting onto the podium if Marta can play how we have come to expect her to.

France (+525)

This will only be the second Olympic appearance for the French women at the Olympic Games, but don’t let that fool you, this is a very talented team. If this team needs any more inspiration than just winning gold, it will be to win a tournament for Louisa Necib. She has been the face of women’s soccer in France for many years now, and she just recently announced that the Olympics would be her final international appearance.

If you are looking for a couple of potential dark horses to get on the podium at this tournament, then I would suggest taking a look at Canada (+1000) and Australia (+1200). Both are unlikely to win, but do have the ability to make some noise.

2016 Olympic Men’s Soccer Expert Predictions

Previous Betting News

Given that soccer is the most popular sport in the world, you would think that the Olympic Games would be considered one of the best places to showcase it. That has not proven to be the case, though, but the Olympic Committee is doing all it can to change that. The tournament is now limited to players under the age of 23, but each team also gets to invite three over aged players into the squad, which means that we get a chance to see some legitimate talent on display. The Olympic soccer event in Rio may well be the one that gets people genuinely excited about the games, as there are a number of teams who could make their mark at the tournament. Let’s take a look at the likely betting odds favorites to take the gold.

A Closer Look At The 2016 Olympic Men’s Soccer Expert Predictions

Make no mistake about it, Brazil are in this to win it. The last time they hosted a major tournament was at the 2014 World Cup, where they ended up going down 7-1 in the semi-final to Germany. They want to wash that bad taste out of their mouths, and they are bringing a hugely talented squad with them. Brazil served notice that they would be going for gold when they sent a weak squad to the Copa America earlier this summer. The most notable absence was Neymar, who was held out of the team so that he would be ready for the Olympics. Brazil are the team to beat here.

The biggest rivals to Brazil are generally the teams that you would expect to see at any major soccer tournament. Argentina are heading o Rio with a very talented squad that includes Angel Correa up front. The Atletico Madrid man netted 4 times at the South American youth cup last year, and may well be the one who challenges Neymar for the scoring title at the Olympics. You also have to look at Germany, as they are always a legitimate challenger at every single tournament they take part in. It would come as a major surprise if they didn’t get near the medal podium this time around. You also cannot forget about the defending champions Mexico, as they have also used their over age picks to send a trio of very good players. The pick of the bunch may be Oribe Peralta. This is the man who scored the winning goal that secured the gold medal for Mexico 4 years ago.

Those are the teams that are most likely to dominate the betting lines at the Olympic soccer tournament, but let’s not forget that teams from Asia and Africa have traditionally performed well at this event. If I had to pick a dark horse from that group, it would probably be South Korea. I don’t think they can win it, but if Son Heung-min can find his shooting boots, which he has proven he can, the Koreans might just get to the medal podium.

It may come across as something of a safe prediction, but I really don’t see Brazil letting down their home fans on two consecutive tournaments.

Rio 2016 Women’s Soccer Expert Betting Pick

Previous Betting News

The United States women’s soccer team is the defending gold medalist in the Olympics and the Americans are heavy olympic soccer betting favorites for the third match of the 2016 Rio Games on Tuesday against Colombia. Team USA is priced at -900 on soccer odds with Colombia at +1000 and the over/under 2.5 goals.

Analyzing the Rio 2016 Women’s Soccer Betting Predictions

No team has ever followed a Women’s World Cup title with an Olympic gold in the following year. The U.S. women are looking to accomplish that. Four Olympic players (Crystal Dunn, Lindsey Horan, Allie Long and Mallory Pugh) are the only players who were not on the 2015 Women’s World Cup-winning side. Pugh is the youngest player on the team at 18 years, 3 months and 5 days old, while Hope Solo is the oldest at 35 years and 4 days old.

Standing in the Americans’ way will be several teams that could pull off an upset. Brazil, an Olympic silver medalist in ’04 and ’08, will lean on the home crowds and the offensive creativity of Marta and Christiane. Brazil did beat the U.S. in Brasilia in a December 2014 friendly and earned a 1-1 draw last year in Seattle.

The Americans played Colombia in the Women’s World Cup Round of 16 and won 2-0. The teams also met back in April and the USA won 3-0 in a friendly. Christen Press began the scoring after she lifted a bouncing ball over Colombia goalkeeper Catalina Perez in the 26th minute off a cross from Lindsey Horan. It was the 33rd international goal for Press in 66 games. Julie Johnston notched her sixth career goal when she lunged to volley Tobin Heath’s free kick over the goalkeeper keeper and into the right corner just before halftime. Heath found Johnston again on a set piece in the 79th minute, hitting a low cross from the right and Johnston dove to flick a header just inside the left post. Goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher recorded her fourth career win and shutout in her second appearance of the year. The match was the second between the teams in four days with the USA winning 7-0 in East Hartford, Conn., on April 6.

The Americans opened the Olympics with a 2-0 Group G win over New Zealand on goals from captain Carli Lloyd and forward Alex Morgan. Lloyd staked the USA to an early lead in the ninth minute before Morgan struck just 34 seconds into the second half. On the defensive side, Kelley O’Hara, Johnston, Becky Sauerbrunn and Meghan Klingenberg put in a commanding performance to help earn the USA’s 14th shutout of 2016.

The USA then beat France 1-0 on Saturday. Lloyd scored in the 63rd minute. Lloyd’s goal was the 90th of her career and eighth Olympic goal for the USA, pushing her to second all-time behind Abby Wambach’s 10 Olympic tallies. Whitney Engen made her Olympic debut in place of the injured Johnston, who was held out to protect a sore groin. U.S. keeper Solo earned her 200th career cap in the game. She is the only goalkeeper to ever reach that appearance mark in international play.

The USA is 16-0- 1 in 2016. The team has scored 55 goals and tallied 15 shutouts while allowing just four goals. The USA has now kept a clean sheet in its first two Olympic matches for the third time in team history. It also did so at the 2000 and 2012 Olympic Games.

Tuesday’s match vs. Colombia begins at 6 p.m. ET from Manaus. The game really doesn’t mean anything for Team USA as it already has clinched Group G and a spot in the knockout round. American coach Jill Ellis will have the luxury of resting some players with her team facing its third game in nine days. The Americans also beat Colombia 3-0 in the 2012 Olympics.

The Olympic Women’s Football Tournament features 12 teams, with the top two finishers in each group advancing to the quarterfinals along with the two best third-place teams.

My Expert Pick

Colombia actually is good betting value here as I do expect Team USA to rest some key players. But the USA will repeat as Olympic champion.
