Spain (-161) vs Switzerland (+398)

  • When: Friday, July 2

Let’s start with Spain. Few teams, if ever, can score 5 goals in a match in a tournament of this caliber. Spain has done it in back-to-back matches. In their final group stage game versus Slovakia, the Spanish trounced their opponents 5-0.

Then in Spain’s Round of 16 match, the Spanish beat Croatia 5-3. The victory against Croatia is particularly impressive because the Spanish had to deal with Real Madrid star Luka Modric and Chelsea midfielder Mateo Kovasic.

But as impressive as the victory was, Inter Milano forward Ivan Perisic didn’t step onto the pitch. Without Perisic, Croatia didn’t appear to play at their highest possible level.

Also, Spain scored 2-of-5 goals late and in extra time, which means Croatia scored 3 goals against the Spanish. Finally, Spain could bounce big time. It’s difficult to score 2 goals versus top international competition, much less 5 in back-to-back matches.

No doubt, Switzerland is an underdog in this match. But there are some things to like about the team that knocked off favored France. Switzerland plays a style that should frustrate Spain.

The Swiss take their time and don’t mind playing to draws or even penalty kicks. The Swiss beat France via penalties. Switzerland requires some luck, Spain must regress from their current form, but the odds don’t justify a play on the Spanish. The odds do justify a play on the Swiss.

Soccer Pick: Switzerland

Italy (+126) vs Belgium (+216)

  • When: Friday, July 2

If you don’t read too much into Spain scoring 5 goals in two straight matches, or England’s 2-0 win against Germany, Italy by far has impressed the most. The Italians handled an Austrian side with 21 European club league players 2-1 in their Round of 16 match.

The game was the first where Italy allowed a goal. No doubt, the Italians will play hard. Italy would be the pick in this even if the Belgium’s were at one-hundred percent, which they most likely won’t be.

Although no official word has landed, Roberto Martinez, Belgium’s head coach, hinted that neither Manchester City midfielder Kevin De Bruyne nor Belgian captain Eden Hazard would play on Friday.

Many consider De Bruyne the best player in the world. Hazard played awesome in Belgium’s 1-0 victory over Ronaldo and Portugal. Again, we’d side with the Italians with or without Belgium’s injuries.

But the fact that De Bruyne and Hazard won’t play, or at least won’t be one-hundred percent, means Italy, at the current odds, is an overlay.

Soccer Pick: Italy
