EURO Cup Games For Thursday: The only guarantee that each of the 24 teams in the European Championship has been that they will get to play 3 group games.

How those games play out determines whether or not a team will move onto the final 16 and the knockout portion of the tournament.

My Analysis

We have now completed the first round of group games, with the second batch starting on Wednesday. Some teams will clinch their spot in the Round of 16 after these games, while others will either have their fate sealed or live to fight another day. With all of that in mind, let’s take a look at the 3 games on the Thursday schedule, with predictions for each.

Slovenia +390 vs Serbia -128

Given how the first round of group games went, one of these teams could be in real trouble by the time this game is over. Slovenia managed to salvage a point against Denmark after going behind, and know that a win in this one would almost certainly be enough to see them into the Round of 16.

Serbia needs something from this game after losing 1-0 to England in their opener, although they can perhaps count themselves a little unlucky to have come away with nothing from that game, as they did have some chances to take a point.

We have not seen many draws through the opening round of games at this tournament, but I think that is exactly where we are headed with this one.

Denmark +440 vs England -146

Most fan bases are happy to get a win in the opening game of a tournament, but the English are held to a higher standard. They came away with a 1-0 win over Serbia but looked cagey and too defensive at times, making for some nervous moments late in the game. This is a talented squad that should be playing better.

The Danes are now in a tough spot after giving up a late goal to Slovenia, which meant taking 1 point instead of 3. If they get nothing from this game, they will be heading into their final group game needing a win to stay alive.

As good as the England squad is, there is still a sense that they are hampered by their defensive tactics. I think we get another tight game here, but I am taking England for the narrow win.

Spain +112 vs Italy +260

This is easily the best game of the day and one where both teams might well be happy to share the spoils. Spain looked fantastic in their opener, cruising to a 3-0 win over Croatia in a matchup that most of us thought would be a good deal closer. They have set themselves a very high bar.

Italy had to show some real composure in their opening game after going a goal down to Albania in just 23 seconds, which was the fastest goal in tournament history. They wore the Albanians down and eventually came away with a 2-1 win.

While a draw would suit both teams, I’m not so sure if this is how it all plays out. I think it will be Spain that comes away with the win.
