Paris 2024 Water Polo Betting Preview: Gold Medal Contenders – Odds & Picks

If you tend to stick to the same sports to wager on, the Olympic Games are a great way to break out and try something new.

For soccer fans, we would suggest taking a look at water polo, which looks like a cross between soccer and handball in the water.

My Analysis

It’s one of the better sports to watch, with tons of action and scoring.

At the Olympic Games, we have the men’s and women’s water polo events to wager on, and while you may want to watch a little to get a handle on things, now might well be the time to get in on the favorites to win the gold medal in both events.

We are going to try and break things down to help you make your water polo picks, so let’s get to it.

Men’s Olympic Water Polo Betting Lines

The men’s tournament is made up of 12 teams, split into two groups of 6.

There are no toes in this sport, so the winner gets 2 points, with nothing going to the loser in the preliminary round games.

We have 4 teams from each group moving on to the quarterfinals, so losing a game is not necessarily the end of the world.

There is still going to be a good battle in the group rounds, as there are only really a couple of teams who don’t look to have any chance of moving on.

One thing to consider when looking at the tournament as a whole is how these teams performed at the World Championships earlier this year.

At that event, it was Croatia winning it all, with Italy and Spain taking the lesser medals.

It is worth noting, though, that Spain beat Croatia in that tournament, which may help explain why they are the favorites to win gold at odds of +204.

Besides the teams already mentioned, you also need to take a look at Hungary (+230) who are sitting just behind Spain on the bookies board.

While it may be tough to do the double, I am going with Croatia to win at odds of +560.

Olympic Games Waterpolo Men’s Winner

  • Spain +204
  • Hungary +230
  • Italy +300
  • Croatia +560
  • Greece +720
  • Serbia +1125
  • USA +3800
  • France +6600
  • Montenegro +6600
  • Australia +46000
  • Romania +50000
  • Japan +50000

Women’s Olympic Water Polo Betting Lines

There are fewer teams on the women’s side, with 10 nations taking part.

There are 2 groups of 5 teams, with the preliminary round and knockout stage playing out the same way as it does on the men’s side.

I think that the preliminary round is actually pretty easy to handicap, as it looks to me as though China and France will be the teams going out at this stage of the proceedings.

While the men’s side has a few teams to consider, the women’s event looks to be a little more obvious.

Team USA has won gold in each of the last 3 Olympic Games, as well as being 8-time world champions, so they are the clear and obvious favorite to win it all again this time around.

The US is at -240 to win gold, so if you think they can win it again, now would be the time to get that wager on.

The battle for silver and bronze, assuming we don’t get an upset result along the way, looks to be very good.

The other key players here are Netherlands (+500), Spain (+580), and Hungary (+900).

Olympic Games Waterpolo Women’s Winner

  • USA -240
  • Netherlands +500
  • Spain +580
  • Hungary +900
  • Australia +1525
  • Greece +1700
  • Italy +1925
  • Canada +15000
  • France +26000
  • China +30000
