There are just 5 races remaining in the 2022 WRC season, with a champion very close to being crowned. That could potentially happen this weekend, as the drovers head to Belgium looking to run down the overall leader, who at this point looks to have a lead that cannot be caught. Still, stranger things have happened in sports, so this weekend is especially important for the drivers who are sitting off the pace and trying to run the leader down. Outside of the battle for the World Championship, there is something else to keep an eye on, which is the WRC debut of Jos Verstappen, father of F1 champion Max Verstappen, who is taking on this rally at the age of 50. We don’t expect him to win, but there are a few other drivers who could take this rally, so let’s take a closer look at them and you can get ready to bet against their WRC Odds.
2022 Ypres Rally Belgium Analysis and Preview | WRC Betting Picks
Kalle Rovanpera
It is not yet official, but it does only seem like a matter of time before Rovanpera wraps up the World Championship this season. This is a victory that has been coming for a while, as Rovanpera has gotten progressively better with each passing season, with his 4th place overall finish last year his best. He has been totally dominant in 2022, already winning 5 races and taking 2nd in the previous race in Finland to get to 198 points on the season, 94 points ahead of the closest rival. He finished 3rd in this rally last season, and a similar performance might just be enough for him to wrap things up.
Ott Tanak
It was beginning to look as though Rovanpera was going to be impossible to beat the rest of the way, but Tanak made things a little more interesting by pipping the leader in the previous rally in Finland. Whether he can build on that win and take the title race all the way to the finish remains to be seen, but you do have to say that is seems unlikely given the ground he has to make up over the final 5 races. If he is to stay alive and in with a shot, he will need to do better than his 6th place finish in Belgium last year.
Thierry Neuville
Once you get past the top 2 in the driver standings, you are looking at guys who are probably going to have to settle for some of the lesser places. Neuville is just 1 point behind Tanak, but given that he has yet to win a race this season, it seems highly unlikely that he will be able to take a run at the top spot. If you were looking at betting on him to win a race, this might well be the one. Neuville is a Belgian native and he won this rally in 2021.
Elfyn Evans
Evans is another driver who is going to need to settle for finishing outside the top spot this season, as he is also still looking for his first win of the year. Right now, it’s all about finishing strong and landing as high as possible on the driver standings. Evans finished 4th in this rally in 2021, so expect him to be among the leaders this weekend.
