Who Makes the Main Event? Exploring All-Star Open & Race Odds for the NASCAR Cup Series

It’s a big weekend in North Wilkesboro, with the NASCAR All-Star festivities taking center stage.

The main race goes on Sunday night at 8 PM EST, but there are still a couple of spots in that race up for grabs.

Sunday NASCAR Favorites
1. Ty Gibbs390 points
2. Bubba Wallace316 points
4. Noah Gragson239 points
3. Alex Bowman365 points

My Analysis

How will those spots be filled? We will find out which 2 drivers move into the main All-Star Race when we get the results of the All-Star Open. That race, which is set to go at 5:30 PM EST, is a 100-lap race open to drivers who have not qualified for the main event. The top 2 move on and will have a shot at winning the All-Star Race, although doing so is going to be tough, especially with so many big guns taking part. Let’s take a look at the latest Cup Series odds for the 2024 All-Star Open.

Ty Gibbs Cup Series Pick +242

Gibbs is the clear favorite to win this race and move on, and for good reason. He is having a solid year in the Cup Series, and while he is still looking for his first win of the season, he has been on the podium 3 times. He is sitting in 7th overall in the driver standings and is looking very much like a playoff player this season. Gibbs has yet to win in the Cup Series in his 2 full seasons at this level, but he is not going against the best drivers in this one. While Gibbs is unlikely to be among the favorites if he makes it to the All-Star race proper, he is more than capable of winning this one.

Bubba Wallace Cup Series Pick +500

If the season were to end today, Wallace would be in the playoffs, albeit by the skin of his teeth. He is sitting down in the #16 spot at the moment as he looks to make it to the playoffs for the first time in his Cup Series career. While this race has no impact on the regular season as a whole, a good showing here might well kickstart his run for a playoff spot in the second half of the season. One thing we should mention here is that he ran 5th on this track in the Truck Series in 2023.

Noah Gragson Cup Series Pick +730

Gragson is sitting below the playoff line right now, sitting at 19th overall. He has had some decent performances, though, and has cracked the top 10 in 5 races this season. He has actually landed in the top 10 in 3 of his last 4 races, so he is in a very decent run of form right now and is going against drivers who are more at the level he is at the moment. I think Gragson has a real chance for a positive showing on Sunday.

Alex Bowman Cup Series Pick +750

If you are looking for a driver who has the hot hand right now, you probably shouldn’t look any further than Bowman. He has been in the top 10 in 9 different races this season, including in each of the last 4. He has also had sone fairly decent success at the Cup Series level. Winning 6 races over the years and making it to the playoffs 5 different times. E is definitely worth keeping an eye on.

2023 All-Star Open / All-Star Race

The NASCAR Cup Series season is long and tiring, with the drivers getting very little time to recharge between each race. While this weekend in North Wilkesboro is not an off week, it’s the next best thing for the drivers. The All-Star Race is an opportunity to have some fun and not have to worry about picking up points or the current driver standings. Make no mistake about it, though, all of these guys are super competitive and will want to get the win on Sunday afternoon. To win, they are going to need to tackle a track that hasn’t been part of NASCAR for over a quarter century. This will be a fun event for the drivers and the fans, but who will win? Let’s take a look at the NASCAR betting analysis and the current favorites.

Kyle Larson

Betting Pick: +560

It has been a bit of an up and down first half of the season for Larson, and while he was not at his best early on, he has been much better of late, winning a couple of races and moving into the top 5 in the driver standings. We all know that Larson is a fierce competitor, as proven by his Cup Series winning season in 2021, which came immediately after being suspended for most of 2020. He had an off year in 2022, but he did still finish 7th overall. This is a format that he really seems to enjoy, as he has won 2 of the last 4. It’s easy to see why he is the favorite again on Sunday.

William Byron

Betting Pick: +700

Last season was the first time that Byron cracked the top 10 overall, finishing 6th and winning a pair of races over the season. There are still a lot of races to come, but Byron is very much on pace to better his finish from last season. He already has 3 wins this year including a victory at Darlington last weekend. That has him sitting 5th overall at this stage of the season. Last year, he ran 11th in the All-Star Race, so it stands to reason that he might be even better this time around. I’d be looking at him as a potential top 5 finisher.

Denny Hamlin

Betting Pick: +820

It seems strange to say that last season was an off year for Hamlin given that he finished 5th overall. That said, it snapped a run of 3 straight season where he made it to the final 4. He is very much in the mix again this season, though, as he is currently sitting 4th in the driver standings. He only has 1 win on the year, but that one came recently, so he might just be in the form required to win this. He does have a history in this race, winning it in 2015 and finishing 2nd last year.

Chase Elliott

Betting Pick: +820

Ordinarily, seeing Chase Elliott as one of the favorites for any race is not that surprising. After all, this is a driver just a couple of years removed from a championship and one who always seems to be up among the leaders. This year is different, though, as he missed 6 weeks in the early going after suffering an injury off the track. His battle now is to try and get back into the top 16, but this might be a good exercise for him to get back in the groove. He won this race a couple of years back, so let’s not count him out.
