There is certainly something fun about watching an athlete dominate a sport and break all kinds of records, but there comes a time when we all want to see that person knocked off their lofty perch.
Love him or hate him, you cannot deny how good Max Verstappen has been in Formula 1 over the past few years.

My 2024 Italian Grand Prix Analysis
His dominance may well have reached its peak last season, when he won the championship in an absolute canter, as there are now signs that a new contender might be emerging.
We are not sure that it will be enough to change the direction of the championship race this season, but it is going to make the remainder of the season very interesting indeed.
This weekend, we will be in Monza for the running of the Italian Grand Prix, so let’s take a look at the drivers expected to be in the hunt.
^Lando Norris
As mentioned above, we have a driver emerging that could be a threat to the dominance that Verstappen has delivered in recent years.
Lando Norris is coming to life this season and is coming off his second win of the year after taking the checkered flag in the Netherlands.
You have to go back a few years to find Norris’ best finish on this track, which was a 4th place run in 2020, but I think it’s fair to suggest that we can expect better this weekend.
I’m a little nervous about playing him to win, but a top 3 finish would definitely be the way to go.
^Max Verstappen
While this is certainly a rough patch of form for Verstappen, the reality is that he still has a rather comfortable lead at the top of the driver standings.
His current winless streak is currently sitting at 5 races, which is a rather shocking number when you consider that he tends to win more than he loses.
He does have a couple of podium finishes included in that stretch, while his lead at the top is still sitting at 70 points.
There is still a lot of racing to come, though, so perhaps that lead will shrink if Verstappen cannot find a way to get back to winning.
Verstappen has won this race in each of the last 2 seasons, so he could snap that funk in Monza.
^Other Drivers to Consider
Okay, so if we are to assume that the current top 2 drivers will be on the podium this weekend, that leaves space for one more, so who else could join those guys.
Oscar Piastri is having a stellar second season in F1 and has been on the podium in 2 of the last 3 races, so definitely worth a look.
Charles Leclerc has just 1 win this season, with that one come into his native Monaco, but he also has several podium finishes, including landing in the top 3 in each of the last 2 races.
Can he maintain that streak this weekend?
With a pair of wins in his last 4 races, Lewis Hamilton has turned the clock back just a little.
He did not have a great showing in the last race in the Netherlands, but could he get back on the podium this weekend?

Italian Grand Prix 2023
It is only a matter of time before Max Verstappen clinches his 3rd straight Formula 1 Championship, and while this season is essentially a foregone conclusion, the question is about how long his dominance will continue. Teams are already starting to make moves in planning for the future, with Mercedes inking new deals with Lewis Hamilton and George Russell. They are proof that dominance can indeed come to an end, with Mercedes unable to deliver a car that can compete with Red Bull Racing, who have swept every race to this point in the season. Only time will tell how things will play out in the coming years, so all we can do is focus on the next race up, which is the Italian Grand Prix. That is a level of dominance that is unmatched, so you have to believe that it would need to be an error, which seems unlikely, or a crash that stops him winning again this weekend. Verstappen won in Italy last year and looks set to repeat.
Sergio Perez
F1 Betting Pick: +880
As we mentioned earlier, it has been a clean sweep for Red Bull Racing this season, with Perez winning the 2 races that Verstappen failed to win. This team is head and shoulders above the rest at the moment, but can they carry on winning and prevent any other team or driver from breaking up their run? Besides his wins, Perez has been on the podium 5 other times, so he is certainly in the conversation for another podium finish, although he did finish outside the top 5 in his last 2 runs in Italy, so might that open the door for another driver?
Other Drivers to Consider
If we are to assume that Verstappen is about to put up another win, then who else will be on the podium when all is said and done? Former champions Fernando Alonso (+1925) has rolled the clock back a little this season, and while he has not won a race in 2023, he has been a consistent podium finisher, landing in the top 3 in 7 different races, so he seems like a decent podium bet. Lewis Hamilton (+1950) is fresh off of signing a new contract to stay with Mercedes for the next few years, so can he celebrate that with a strong showing this weekend? He has had 3 straight races outside the top 3, plus he has not been great in Italy over the past couple of seasons, but he still might be worth risking a top 3 wager on.
