Oklahoma Basketball Analysis

The Sooners (10-0) stayed unbeaten with an 80-65 win over rival Oklahoma State on Saturday. The Cowboys couldn’t do much in the first half and trailed 43-26 at the break. Oklahoma State shot 25.9% from the field in the first half and didn’t make a basket for more than eight minutes. Oklahoma extended a 17-point halftime lead to 53-31 on a layup by Jeremiah Fears at the 16:44 mark of the second period. Oklahoma State didn’t get any closer than 15 points after that. The Sooners scored 42 points in the paint, compared to 26 for Oklahoma State.

Sam Godwin

Godwin had a career-high 20 points with 14 rebounds, along with three steals and two blocks, to lead Oklahoma. He was the first Sooner since Blake Griffin on Jan. 5, 2009 (vs. Maryland-Eastern Shore with 20 points, 16 rebounds, 4 blocks, 3 steals) to reach those totals. Griffin and Godwin are the only two since 1996-97.

Scored Points

The freshman Fears added 17 points and Kobe Elvis had 15 points for the Sooners, who made 30 of 61 shots (49%) from the field. Godwin was involved early and often, scoring the first six points of the game for Oklahoma. With Oklahoma State frequently doubling the Sooners’ guards in the pick and roll, Godwin saw plenty of opportunities on the short roll and at the rim.

Porter Moser

“It helped us so much,” OU coach Moser said. “He finished early. He got those first ones to go in. Getting in the pocket and finishing. He made good decisions in there. Got us out of the gates.” Under Moser, Oklahoma is 34-3 when shooting 50% or greater from the field, including 3-0 in, 2024-25.

The Offensive

Despite their perfect start to the season, Oklahoma’s strength of schedule currently ranks 314th nationally. The Sooners’ offensive rating of 115.9 places them 34th in the country, while their defensive rating of 98.7 is ranked 49th. Their faster pace of play has also been noticeable, as they rank 198th, now averaging 67.9 possessions per game.

The Stats

OU is in the top 60 in nine NCAA DI categories, ranking 13th in steals per game (10.2), 20th in free throw percentage (78.9), 29th in turnover margin (4.2), 31st in scoring margin (15.6), 31st in three point percentage defense (28.6), 37th in turnovers forced per game (15.5), 46th in effective field goal percentage (56.1%), 52nd in 3-pointers per game (9.6) and 60th in free throws made per game (16.5).

Jeremiah Fears

Fears is 26th in steals per game (2.4), 34th in steals (24), 45th in free throws (50), 94th in free throw attempts (59), 82nd in assists per game (4.7), 95th in assists (47) and 99th in free throw percentage (86.2). Jalon Moore is 89th in points per game (17.5) and 53rd in free throws made (49). Elvis is 89th in assist/turnover ratio (2.44). Duke Miles is 77th in steals per game (2.0) and 95th in steals (20).

On 11 occasions, Oklahoma has started 10-0 or greater, including 10–0 starts in 2023-24 and 2024-25. It’s the first time in school history that OU has started 10-0 in back-to-back years. Oklahoma was selected 15th out of 16 teams by the media in the 2024-25 SEC Preseason Poll, but that clearly looks like a mistake.

Michigan Basketball Analysis

No. 24 Michigan (8-2) comes off an 89-87 neutral-site loss to Arkansas on Dec. 10 in New York City to snap a seven-game winning streak, even though the Razorbacks went without a basket for the final 3:01 and nearly blew an 18-point lead. Michigan pulled to 88-87 on a basket by Danny Wolf with 88 seconds left, but did not score again. The Wolverines shot 57.6% but were extremely streaky. Besides hitting 11 in a row to get the big lead in the first half, they also made seven straight to chip away at the 18-point deficit.

Vladislav Goldin

Seven-footers Goldin and Wolf led the Wolverines in scoring with 17 and 14 points, respectively. Each added nine rebounds, with Wolf also totaling nine assists. Roddy Gayle Jr. and Will Tschetter each had 13 points on the night. Nimari Burnett chipped in 10 points. Tschetter recorded his fourth double-figure game this season and has now posted back-to-back games of 13-plus points and three three-pointers.

The Streak

U-M turned the ball over 17 times and allowed 12 offensive rebounds to snap that seven-game winning streak, the team’s longest since 2020-21, and an 11-game winning streak at Madison Square Garden. Turnovers and rebounding have been a focal point in film sessions of the past week. With an eight-day gap between games, the Wolverines finished the semester, projects and finals, while also getting valuable practice time.

Dusty May

“We’re big at, ‘Let’s fix this thing.’ And all the other details, let’s show them in small groups — the point guards together, maybe two of the point guards together to watch each other’s clips,” Coach May said of the rebounding and turnovers. “There were a handful of plays where we didn’t play with enough physicality, and we missed block outs. Even when we made the contact, it wasn’t aggressive enough. So then the turnovers, the same thing. You just see so many different ways. There were some that should be simple to fix, and then there are others that are just the cost of doing business. If you slip, if you step on the line with your heel occasionally, we live with those things.”

Over his last four games, Goldin has four straight 15-plus games, and back-to-back 20-plus point games, including a career-best 25 at No. 11 Wisconsin. He has averaged 19.8 points, 7.5 rebounds and 2.0 blocks. He is shooting 69.0 percent (29-for-42) with 14 dunks.

Danny Wolf

Wolf has nearly matched Goldin. In his last four games, Danny has averaged 16.8 points, 11.0 rebounds and 4.5 assists. He is shooting 62.8 percent (27-for-43). He tied his season best of 14 rebounds, twice, and had a career-best nine assists vs. Arkansas and a career-best five blocks at No. 11 Wisconsin. Goldin (19) and Wolf (16) combine for 35 of U-M’s 49 blocks (71 percent), and Wolf (99) and Goldin (58) combine for 157 of U-M’s 379 rebounds (41 percent). Goldin and Wolf are the seventh and eighth Wolverines, respectively, to surpass 7-feet in Michigan history.

In both of Michigan’s losses, the Wolverines have lost by a bucket in a month apart. U-M fell 72-70 vs. Wake Forest (Deacon-Wolverine Challenge; Nov. 10) and then the loss to Arkansas on Dec. 10.
