Boise State Broncos

It has been a solid year for the Mountain West Conference, with the Broncos getting somewhat lost in the shuffle. They are sitting at 16-8 right now, but they saw their hopes take a hit with back-to-back losses in the past week. They are 5-6 in Quadrant 1 games, which is not awful for a team on the bubble, as it means that they have played some big games. They have home games against New Mexico and Fresno State coming down the stretch. Win those and a bracket spot looks good.

One big win does not a season make, but you cannot ignore the fact that the Cornhuskers have a win over Purdue this season, as well as 2 more wins in Quad 1 games. They have not been great on the road, which is an issue, going 1-7 away from home this season. They will return to action this weekend at home to the Penn State Nittany Lions, a game that they really cannot afford to lose.

They might need to win out or win the WCC Tournament to fully secure their spot.

You look back on the Bearcats schedule and you see a couple of massive road wins against BYU and Texas Tech, both of whom are tournament bound. Their next opportunity to impress comes next week against the Iowa State Cyclones at home. With four days until Selection Sunday, conference tournaments are in full swing in college basketball. There is still a healthy mix of mid-major and major conference events on the docket, and there are a number of early-round games in the aforementioned major conference tournaments with significant NCAA Tournament scenarios.

While some teams are playing for seeding, others are literally playing for their tournament life. Win, and they’re likely in; lose, and they’re relegated to the NIT or, even worse, no postseason and a screeching halt to the end of the season.

One of the biggest mysteries is sports gambling is determining intent and motivation of the part of the athlete or, ion this case a team. With these win-and-in games, we’re about to dive into, it almost has to be a foregone conclusion that the team(s) who “need” the game are going to play with an extreme sense of urgency and leave it all out there.

Without further ado, let’s check out college basketball betting prediction and analysis for the 2023 NCAA Basketball Tournament games.

Bubble Teams In Must Win Situations

Showdown in Chitown

One of the indelible images of the ill-fated 2020 season was the Michigan-Rutgers first-round Big 10 Tournament game. After both teams headed to the arena and even took warmups, it was determined that due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the game and subsequent season would be canceled. No such worries this time as the Wolverines (17-14) and Scarlet Knights (18-13) play a do-or-die battle.

The 8th-seeded Michigan Wolverines could be a dangerous team come mid-March, however, Juwan Howard’s bunch has yet to punch their ticket and likely need to beat Rutgers and then put up a strong fight against top-seeded Purdue. The maize and blue enter losers of two straight, road losses at Illinois and Indiana.

Rutgers is a team on a free fall, having lost 7 of its last 9 and seen its tournament dreams nearly fade away. Injuries and offensive woes have plagued the black and red lately, and momentum definitely has not been on their side.

The teams last met on February 23, with Michigan dealing the Scarlet Knights a 58-45 loss in New Jersey. We expect the Wolverines to be a slight favorite here (KenPom has this as a 68-67 Big Blue victory), and unlike the next game we will look at, both teams must win to have any shot of having their name called on Sunday. We would side with the Wolverines, given Rutgers’ struggles of late. Take Michigan and lay the points.

Bulldogs Look to Dance

In the mind of bracketologists, Mississippi State (20-11) is squarely in the tournament……as an 11 seed and in the play-in games in Dayton. Therefore, a win should solidify their chances while a loss all but ends their March Madness dreams before they even begin. Florida (16-15) has had a disappointing year and likely needs to win or make the SEC final to get a bid.

The Mississippi State Bulldogs are in the conversation for their first trip to March Madness since 2019 and fourth since 2007 on the strength of two impressive Quad 1 non-league wins early (Marquette and TCU) and a league road win at Arkansas.

The Bulldogs’ style certainly is not easy on the eyes; they’re 292nd in average possession length according to KenPom and average just 66.4 points per game. However, this team does defend as they are 7th in America according to KenPom in overall defensive efficiency.

The Gators come in having won their last two but have lost six of their last nine and, therefore in this predicament. The teams met once this year, with Florida squeaking out a 61-59 victory.

KenPom has this one as a 64-63 Bulldog win. This is a case of one team really needing to win to cement their spot, and despite their current two-game losing skein, we really like Mississippi State to prevail here as a strong play. We also like the under in this contest which likely will hover in the high 120’s/low 130’s. The slower the better for Miss. State and in this must-win situation they’ll slow it down.

VA Tech can succeed in stamping their ticket to the NCAA Men’s College Basketball Tournament by winning the ACC Tournament. But if they don’t win the ACC Tournament, a couple of quality victories with at least one of the wins against Duke will lead to a bid. 

Will it happen? Nope.

To Make the NCAA Tournament: No 

Oklahoma Sooners

Like VA Tech n the ACC, Big 12 team Oklahoma can win their conference tournament and grab and automatic bid. But let’s not kid ourselves.

What are the chances of Oklahoma beating a combination of Baylor, Kansas, Texas Tech, TCU, and Texas, and winning the deepest tournament in college basketball? Zero to negative. 

Heck, the Sooners probably won’t make it to the second-round of their conf tournament because on Thursday they play against Baylor. A win over the Bears puts air in their bubble. But even then, it may not be enough.

To Make the NCAA Tournament: No

Xavier Musketeers

On March 5, Xavier broke a 5-game losing streak with an impressive 97-75 win over Georgetown. The Hoyas, though, finished the season with a 6-24 record.

Xavier must do something impressive in the Big East Tournament like upsetting Providence, Villanova, and Connecticut, to secure a spot in the Big Dance. Xavier lost to UConn in overtime, lost to Villanova by 4, and lost to Providence by 3 during the season. So, yes, the Musketeers can make waves in this week’s Big East tourney.

To Make the NCAA Tournament: Yes

Michigan Wolverines

Before the season started, the Wolverines were a a top pick to win the National Championship. But after one of the most disappointing seasons in Michigan history, the Wolverines find themselves on the bubble. 

Michigan must impress in the Big Ten Tournament to secure their dancing spot. The prediction here is that not only will Michigan impress but they will make it to the tournament’s championship game. 

The Wolverines blasted ranked Ohio State in their final regular season game. Expect this Michigan squad to get on a roll in their conference tournament and enter the NCAA Tournament a wise guy choice to make the Final Four.

To Make the NCAA Tournament: Yes

Florida Gators

Upsetting Auburn on Feb. 19 helps the cause, but Florida must have a great tournament to secure a spot in the Big Dance.

The win over Auburn just isn’t enough. Florida fell to Kentucky twice, split with Auburn, and lost to Alabama, Tennessee, and to Ole Miss. The loss to Ole Miss is the game that may have put the nail in the coffin. So unless Florida wins the SEC Tournament, they shouldn’t garner a bid. 

To Make the NCAA Tournament: No

SMU Mustangs

Only one AAC team outside of the Houston Cougars will make the NCAA Tournament. Memphis should be that team.

The Tigers beat the Cougars twice. SMU beat Houston once, but that was the Mustangs’ lone impressive victory. SMU can win the American Athletic Conference Tournament.

However, it’s asking a lot for SMU to beat both a scorching Memphis squad and Kelvin Sampson’s Houston team. The prediction is that SMU’s bubble bursts early in an upset loss to a team like Wichita State.

To Make the NCAA Tournament: No

At 19-12, Indiana is borderline. The Hoosiers battle Nebraska on Wednesday, March 11. A win sends them into a match against Penn State. Losing to Nebraska could send Indiana to the bench for the NCAA Tournament. Losing to Penn State won’t. Hoosiers make it.

UCLA’s overall 19-12 record doesn’t impress. What does impress is how the Bruins went 12-6 in conference play. UCLA lost the Pac-12 Regular Season title to Oregon by a single game. The Bruins can ball. Unless Stanford or California upsets them in Round 2 at the Pac-12 Tournament, the Bruins shine their dancing shoes.

With the end of the 2018-19 college hoops regular season almost here and the start of conference championship play just around the corner, it’s now or never for a handful of March Madness hopeful teams that are currently sitting on the proverbial bubble.

Thanks to the expert betting analysis and predictions that you’re about to get, you’re going to have a good idea of just which teams could get into this year’s March Madness tournament and which ones could get left out in the cold come tourney time.

2019 March Madness Betting Predictions for Bubble Teams

Texas (16-14)

The Longhorns just got smacked around by Texas Tech the last time out and they’ll need to beat TCU in their finale on Saturday or make a strong run in the conference championship to have a real shot to get into the NCAA Tournament. Right now, I don’t see it happening, even though I really like Shaka Smart.

TCU (18-12)

TCU has lost three straight against West Virginia, Texas Tech and K-State heading into Saturday’s regular season finale against Texas. I like the Horned frogs to get into the Big Dance by somehow managing to reach the 20-win mark before Selection Sunday.

Florida (17-13)

Consecutive losses against Georgia and LSU have Florida on the bubble heading into their regular season finale against Kentucky on Saturday. The Gators have also suffered a pair of losses against Tennessee, not to mention they lost to the Wildcats by 11 in their earlier regular season meeting. Unless the Gators make a strong showing in the SEC tournament, I think they’ll get left on the outside looking in.

Alabama (17-13)

The Crimson Tide are also in deep danger of not making the tournament seeing as how they’ve dropped two straight and five of their last eight games heading into their regular season closer against an Arkansas team they lost to the last time they met. Basically, Alabama just doesn’t have enough wins over quality opponents this season for me – or anyone – to justify them getting into March Madness.

Seton Hall (17-12)

The Pirates had dropped three straight – until beating Big East-leading Marquette 73-64 on Wednesday night. Wins over Kentucky and Georgetown should be enough to get Seton Hall into the tourney as a No. 14 or 15 seed I suspect.

Syracuse (19-11)

The Orange have gone a modest 5-5 over their last 10 games and they have drama surrounding the vehicular accident that Jim Boeheim was involved in. While Syracuse has suffered a trio of recent losses against Virginia, North Carolina and Duke, the Orange have also recorded quality wins against Louisville, Duke, Clemson and Notre Dame among others. I like Syracuse to get into March Madness – and pull off at least one upset.

Now’s the time for bubble teams to either step it up or go and hide in the shadows. Certain bubble teams will almost assuredly make it to the NCAA Tournament, meaning they probably were never bubble teams to begin with.

Arizona State Sun Devils

Currently, at 16-7, the ASU Sun Devils beat the best team in their conference on Feb. 9. The victory over Washington was nice, but ASU must do much better than that to secure a spot in the NCAA Tournament.

The problem? The Pac 12 is considered the worst of the Big 5 Conferences this season. Arizona, UCLA, and USC are a mess. Oregon is also a mess. Only Washington should make the tournament

Will ASU make it? No, unless they win the Pac 12 Tournament and garner the automatic bid. The Pac 12 probably isn’t as bad as everyone says it is. That won’t help the Sun Devils because it’s all about impressions and the Pac hasn’t made any this season.

Syracuse Orange

The Orange did beat the Duke Blue Devils, the likely overall 1 seed in this year’s NCAA Tournament, but outside of beating Duke, Syracuse hasn’t been overly impressive. They’ve got a ridiculous stretch of games where they battle NC State, Louisville, Duke again, and North Carolina.

Will Syracuse make it? Yes. The Orange only must win 2-of-4 to garner the bid. Even if one of the victories is against NC State, the other win will be versus Duke, UNC, or Louisville. Those are three for sure tournament participants. Also, the Selection Committee absolutely loves Syracuse because they always show up in the tournament, often as a major Cinderella squad.

Oklahoma Sooners

The Sooners are a true bubble team. They’re at 15-9, but have a shot to make it because they battle five possible tournament teams in their last six games. If the Sooners beat Iowa State, Kansas, and Kansas State, the three for sure tourney teams left on their schedule, they’re in.

Will Oklahoma make it? No. The Sooners face tough battles against TCU and Texas, two teams they could lose too, before having to face the Cyclones, Jayhawks, and Wildcats. The Sooners are more likely to implode then they are to upset any one of the three NCAA Tournament for sure participants they play.

Ole Miss Rebels

Ole Miss has a decent resume, but it’s more because of who they’ve lost to than who they’ve beaten. LSU, Iowa State, Mississippi State, and Cincinnati are tournament locks. Their other three losses were to fellow bubble teams Butler, Alabama, and Florida Gators.

Will Ole Miss make it? Yes. The Rebels beat Auburn, Baylor, and Mississippi State this season. Unless they fold in their final regular season games and just don’t show up at all in the SEC Tournament, they should garner an at-large bid.

Ohio State Buckeyes

The Buckeyes were a Top 10 team after running out to a 12-1 straight up record. Losing 6-of-7 is why they’re currently on the bubble. However, they’ve appeared to have turned things around with three straight victories, including beating Indiana 55-52 on the road on Feb. 10. If the Buckeyes can traverse a ridiculous end of season schedule where they must battle Maryland, Purdue, and Michigan State on the road, and take on Wisconsin at home, they’ll make the tournament.

Will Ohio State make it? Yes. The Buckeyes made enough adjustments to end the losing streak. Those adjustments should carry over into victories over Wisconsin and either Purdue, Maryland, or Michigan State. If Ohio State wins 2 of those 4 crazy tough games, they’ll definitely make the NCAA Tournament.

The 2018 NCAA March Madness Selection Show will be televised on TBS on Sunday, March 11, at 6 PM ET. TBS will also televise this year’s NCAA Final Four National Semifinals on Saturday, March 31, along with the National Championship on Monday, April 2.

For the eighth consecutive year, CBS Sports and Turner Sports will provide live coverage of all 67 games from the 2018 NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship across four national television networks – TBS, CBS, TNT and truTV – and via NCAA March Madness Live.

CBS will broadcast the NCAA Final Four National Semifinals, National Championship and Selection Show in 2019, with the events alternating between Turner and CBS each year throughout the partnership.

Prior to the selection show, Turner Sports and CBS Sports will present NCAA March Madness Bracket Preview on Sunday, Feb. 11, at 12:30 PM ET on CBS, with the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Selection Committee offering an in-season look at the NCAA Tournament brackets. NCAA Men’s Committee Chair and Creighton Athletic Director Bruce D. Rasmussen will be in-studio for the reveal of the top 16 seeds, including the four teams in each region, as they stand as of Feb. 11.

They’re On The Bubble

In Like Flynn

Florida State

Florida State Seminoles (20-10) lost two of three to close out the regular season, but split with nationally-ranked Clemson and split with Louisville, not to mention they beat North Carolina and Virginia Tech. The Noles are in as a No. 9 seed in the Midwest for me.

Syracuse

Longtime head coach Jim Boeheim believe his team should be in the field – and I agree, but just barely. Syracuse (19-12) closed out the regular season with a win over Clemson, plus they beat Miami Louisville – and the one that gets them in – Virginia Tech. I’m thinking a First Four appearance could be in the works for the Orange.

Baylor

Baylor (18-13) won five in a row in February and they were a sure-fire lock to get in the NCAA Tournament. Then, the wheels kind of fell off and the Bears lost three of four to close out the regular season. Still, I like Baylor to get in as a No 13 seed in the South Region, seeing as how they beat Kansas, Texas Tech, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State this season.

Oklahoma

So what Oklahoma (18-12) lost seven of their final nine games to close out the regular season. The also beat Texas Tech, TCU, Oregon, Wichita State and Kansas. Plus, they’ve got the electrifying Trae Young (27.5 ppg, 8.9 apg) – and really, who doesn’t want to see him play? For me, the Sooners are in the field as a No. 11 seed out west.

Penn State

The Nittany Lions played Purdue tough twice this season – and they beat nationally-ranked Ohio State twice. For me, that alone says Penn State are in like Flynn and a No. 14 seed in the West Region.

Marquette

Marquette got into the field as a No. 14 seed in the Midwest region based on their pair of wins over Creighton, their split with a St. John’s team that beat Duke and Villanova, their five-point loss against the Wildcats and their four-point loss against Xavier.

No Way Jose

Louisville

Louisville (19-12) beat Virginia Tech and Florida State this season, but the Cardinals also closed out the regular season by losing three of four and seven of 10. I say they’re out of the field and in the NIT, although I gotta’ give David Padgett some serious love for the mostly tremendous job he did after taking over for Rick Pitino amidst some serious – and potentially jail-including drama.

Alabama

Damn, talk about a tale of two halves! Just over a month ago, Alabama (17-14) was sitting pretty at 14-7. Now…the Crimson Tide have dropped five straight heading into the SEC tournament. Alabama got blown out of the water against Auburn and Florida Gators and are in 10th place in the SEC. Sorry, but 10 SEC teams is probably at least three too many!

Bubble Teams

Rhode Island (21-9 SU, 15-14 ATS)

Rhode Island may be in third place in the A-10, but the Rams have won five straight games, including a 69-59 win over a second place VCU squad that has already punched its March Madness ticket. Rhode Island has limited three of its last five opponents to 59 points or less. The Rams could use couple of wins in the A-10 tournament, but I believe they’ll end up as a 12 seed in the west region.

Houston (21-9 SU, 12-14 ATS)

The Cougars are in third place in the AAC behind tournament-bound SMU and Cincinnati, but they’ve won eight of their last 10 games as they furiously try to reach the NCAA tournament. Houston will likely need a quality win or two in the AAC conference tournament to reach the NCAA tournament. If Houston gets in, it will be as a 15 or 16 seed, likely in the east region.

Syracuse (18-13 SU, 13-13 ATS)

Syracuse has lost four of its last six games, but likely did enough recently to become one of a possible 10 ACC teams to reach March Madness. Over their last 10 games, the Orange have beaten nationally-ranked Florida State, Virginia and Duke. Unfortunately, Syracuse’s 71-65 loss to unranked Georgia Tech on Feb. 19 and 88-66 loss to Louisville on Feb. 26, have the Orange on the proverbial bubble. If Syracuse does get into the field for the 2017 NCAA tournament, it will likely be as a 12 seed in the west region.

Kansas State (19-12 SU, 13-12-2 ATS)

Kansas State may be an uninspiring 3-5 over their last eight games and an even more discouraging 4-7 over their last 11 games, but the Wildcats, but they’ve also beaten nationally-ranked Baylor and West Virginia, not to mention beating a very good Oklahoma State team and playing Kansas to a virtual standstill in their 90-88 loss to the nation’s top-ranked team on Jan.3. The Wildcats are currently sixth in the Big 12 rankings and that tells me they will likely need a conference win or two to solidify their March Madness section, but I think the Cats could get in as a 14 seed in the East region.

Seton Hall (20-10 SU, 2-16-1 ATS)

Seton Hall may be in fourth place in the Big East behind Villanova, Butler and Creighton, but the Pirates have won four straight and five of their last six games while beating both, Creighton and Butler along the way. Right now, I have the Pirates getting in as a 13 seed in the South region.

Oklahoma State

The Oklahoma State Cowboys (16-9 SU, 12-7-1 ATS) have won six of their last seven and beat nationally-ranked West Virginia along the way. Unfortunately, Oklahoma State has also suffered convincing losses against Iowa State, Kansas, K-State and Baylor among their last 10 games. Upcoming games against K-State and Iowa State will likely determine whether the Cowboys get into the national championship tournament, but I wouldn’t be real confident in the inconsistent ‘Boys.

Georgetown

I know the Hoyas (14-12 SU, 9-15 ATS)have won four of their last six games while beating likely tourney teams in nationally ranked Creighton and unranked Butler, not to mention the fact that they beat Oregon in November, but I wouldn’t bet with someone else’s money on Georgetown. A pair of losses against Providence and Xavier and losses against mediocre Marquette (15-10) and lowly Arkansas State (14-7) tell me the Hoyas are nothing more than a classic ‘Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde’ team that will break your heart and bust your bankroll.

Georgia

The Bulldogs (15-11 SU, 12-10 ATS) may have won two straight at the time of this writing, but they’re pretty much a non-factor for March Madness consideration if you ask me. With upcoming games against Kentucky and Alabama, things don’t look good for the Dogs right now!

Georgia Tech

The Yellow Jackets (15-10 SU, 11-9 ATS) have recorded impressive wins over North Carolina, Florida State and Notre Dame, but they’ve also suffered double digit losses against Wake Forest, Clemson, Virginia, Louisville, Georgia, and Tennessee not to mention their 110-57 debacle of a loss against Duke on January 4. The Yellow Jackets have some huge games coming up against Miami, Syracuse, NC State and Notre Dame before finishing up at home against Pittsburgh.

Miami-Fla.

With stunning wins over North Carolina and Virginia Tech, the Hurricanes (16-8 SU, 7-15 ATS) look like they could be a problem for anyone. However, don’t believe the hype when it comes to the ‘Canes. Miami has lost four of their last eight and six of their last 11 games overall while getting routed by Florida State, Duke, Wake Forest and Syracuse.
