American League Central Division rivals meet up on Tuesday to begin a three-game series that has plenty of importance. The Chicago White Sox will be hosting the Cleveland Guardians, and both teams are looking to turn things around.
Cleveland was expected to be a playoff contender this season, but they enter this series at just 19-21. The Guardians have won two straight games, and they will be traveling to Chicago with some momentum.
The White Sox have had a miserable start to the season, as they have gone just 14-28 through their first 32 games. Chicago was expected to be in the mix in the NL Central Division, but this team just can’t find any consistency.
It is the Guardians that are slim moneyline favorites in the series opener, and could be favored in two of the three games.

MLB Chicago at Cleveland Series: Tuesday, May 16 – Thurosday, May 18, 2023
Guardians Struggling to Slug
The Cleveland Guardians come into this series with just 23 home runs hit in the first 40 games. That lack of power is a real problem for Cleveland, and it’s going to be something that has to change as the season moves along.
Josh Naylor is leading the team with six home runs this season to go along with 26 RBIs. Jose Ramirez has a .285 batting average to pace the Guardians, but the team is waiting for him to find his power again.
The pitching has kept the Guardians close to .500 as they come into this series with a team ERA of 3.71. Shane Bieber starts the series opener for Cleveland, and he is one of the better pitchers in the AL.
White Sox Need Some Pitching
The Chicago White Sox currently have a team ERA of 5.50, and they have struggled to get outs all season long. Several pitchers for Chicago have lost velocity since last year, and they have been getting pounded all year.
Dylan Cease is set to pitch in this series for Chicago, and he has all of the tools to shut down an opposing lineup. Chicago has started to swing the bats better of late, but they need some help from the pitching staff.
Luis Robert Jr. leads the way with 11 home runs and a .275 batting average this season. Chicago is finally starting to get healthy as well, but they have to find a way to score runs at home.
A Chance For Chicago
There is no doubt that this is a big chance for the Chicago White Sox, but they have to find some pitching. Chicago does have some thunder in their lineup, but they can’t compete when the starting pitching continues to get hit hard.
Cleveland is a better overall team than Chicago is, but their lack of power makes it hard to win games. The Guardians should find some offense in this series, but it’s still not going to be good enough.
Look for the White Sox to play well in this series, and they will find a way to take two out of three games at home.
