In less than eight weeks, college football heads to the gridiron for what promises to be another amazing season. It’s impossible to handicap future contests without having some idea of the spread, which is why in this College Football Betting Guide, we’re going to discuss the five things that you need to know to have a successful NCAAF betting season.
All You Need to Know This College Football Season to Make Smart Bets
2022-23 NCAAF College Football Season
- When: August 27, 2022 – Dec. 10, 2022
Cincinnati can again go undefeated
The Cincinnati Bearcats went undefeated last season. Yes, the Bearcats lost a talent on both sides of the ball. But Cincinnati has enough returning starters on defense to be one of the top units in college football.
On offense, Luke Fickell should have no trouble replacing Desmond Ridder at quarterback with sophomore Evan Prater. If Prater doesn’t work out, transfer Ben Bryant will.
The bottom line is that coaches like Fickell grab momentum and keep going. As long as Fickell is the head coach of Cincinnati, the Bearcats will field competitive teams.
As far as the schedule is concerned, a first game matchup versus SEC Arkansas poses the most danger. If the Bearcats beat the Razorbacks, another undefeated regular season is a real possibility.
Miami, Oregon, USC and Oklahoma have new head coaches
Mario Cristobal ditched Oregon to take the head coaching job at Miami. Oregon hired 2021 Georgia defensive coordinator Dan Lanning.
USC hired 2021 Oklahoma head coach Lincoln Riley. The Sooners replaced Riley with Clemson defensive coordinator Brett Venables.
Don’t worry if the coaching carousel is making your head spin. We’re here to help you sort all of it.
The first ting to remember is that Riley convinced a few top Oklahoma players, including quarterback Caleb Miller, to join him in SoCal. USC can go undefeated and grab a CFP spot.
The second thing to consider is how long it will take Mario Cristobal to turn Miami into an ACC Champion. Former HC Manny Diaz left Cristobal a strong hand. So if Miami offers overlay odds, pounce.
Oregon and Oklahoma could have trouble covering spreads and winning close games. Oklahoma more so than Oregon because Baylor, Texas, Oklahoma State, and Texas Tech should field good football teams.
Notre Dame won’t miss a beat with Marcus Freeman as their head coach
Notre Dame lost head coach Brian Kelly to LSU. But although Kelly is a great coach, the Irish won’t miss him.
South Bend promoted Marcus Freeman from defensive coordinator to head coach. Freeman has fielded some excellent defenses in the past few seasons.
Expect Notre Dame, if anything, to play harder for Freeman than they did for Kelly. The Fighting Irish’s new head coach is a great communicator who knows how to get the best from his players.
Florida could supplant Georgia in the SEC East and Texas A&M could become the SEC West’s best team
Jimbo Fisher landed the nation’s top recruiting class which is why some believe Texas A&M could beat Auburn, LSU, and, yes, Alabama and win the SEC West. That Aggies should be that good this season.
Nobody believes Florida can beat Georgia and win the SEC East. But before turning your backs on the Gators, realize that Billy Napier coaches Florida. Napier is an excellent coach and the Gators have some talent.
Keep Florida and Texas A&M on your radar. Neither should get the press that Bama and Georgia gets, which means in many weeks, the Gators and Aggies will kick off at overlay spreads.
Three of the top five favorites to win the National Championship are SEC teams
Alabama is the overall favorite at +193. Georgia is second choice at +340 and Texas A&M is fifth choice at +2400.
Sandwiched in between Georgia and Texas A&M are Ohio State at +390 and Clemson at +1200. Among the top five choices, it pains us to write this, but Alabama looks like the best pick.
Georgia lost 8-of-11 starters from their National Championship winning defense. Clemson lost defensive coordinator Brett Venables and the offensive line is suspect.
Ohio State is a good team. But the defense won’t hang with Alabama’s offense. Texas A&M has talent, but it’s all young talent.
The best team to consider backing to win the National Championship is Alabama. Now, if you believe the Aggies beat Bama and win the SEC West, consider going with one of the other teams, including Texas A&M. But if you think Alabama goes undefeated, the chalk is the team to back to win the title.
