As we prepare for the Copa America semi-finals, it’s worth taking a quick look back before we look ahead.
I think it’s fair to suggest that things have not gone quite as expected. After all, how many of you thought that Brazil would be gone by this stage?
My Analysis
Also, how many of you looked at the draw for the group stage and expected to see Mexico and the United States fail to make it out?
The US became the first host nation to fail to make it out of the group stage, so their exit was certainly a major.
All of that said, the final four is set, but which two teams will move on to made it to the championship game?
We have some ideas, so let’s look at 3 possible scenarios and how those matchups might go.
^Canada Makes it In
I am not going to spend much time on this, as I simply don’t see the Canadians getting past Argentina, who they will face in the semi-final.
These teams met in the group stage, and while Canada had their chances, it was Argentina who came away with the 2-0 win.
While it is always tough to beat the same team twice in a single tournament, I just think that Argentina is that much stronger from front to back.
If Canada were able to spring the upset, I still believe they would be onto a beating in the final.
^Argentina vs Uruguay
Okay, so if we are to assume that the world champions take care of Canada again and move on, they would have two potentially difficult opponents in the final.
These two teams have a rich history of head-to-head matchups, but in recent years, it has been Argentina that has had the best of things.
Uruguay won the last World Cup Qualifying match against Argentina, breaking Argentina’s 7-match unbeaten streak dating back to 2013.
These two met twice in the Copa America during that time, with Argentina winning both by a combined score of 4-0.
Uruguay has looked better under coach Marcelo Bielsa, who was in charge of their last in over Argentina.
He has his team humming right now, and I think this would be a fantastic final.
It really is a coin flip deciding which way this one would go. I might be tempted to take Uruguay.
^Argentina vs Colombia
So, we have spoken about Argentina and their success already, making it clear that as defending Copa America winners and World Champions, they are indeed the team to beat.
Colombia might just be the team to do them in, though, as they would go into the final on an unbeaten that would be over 25 games.
That is an astonishing run at any level, but especially in international soccer, where the opponents tend to always be tough.
Their record against Argentina is dismal, though, as they have just 1 win in their last 12 meetings, which is a run that goes all the way back to 2009.
These teams have not met since 2022, with Colombia losing that one, but they have been hot in the 2 years since that game and are scoring goals for fun.
This, though, might be the matchup that does them in.
