Presented by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), the awards honor both American and international works, highlighting achievements in acting, directing, writing, and producing.
Held every January, the Golden Globes often serve as a precursor to the Academy Awards, with many nominees and winners at the Globes going on to receive nominations for the Oscars. The event is famous not only for its star-studded red carpet and memorable speeches but also for its entertaining, informal atmosphere—offering a relaxed vibe compared to other awards shows.
Categories for the Golden Globes include Best Motion Picture (Drama and Comedy/Musical), Best Director, Best Actor/Actress in a Motion Picture, and awards for television series, actors, and directors as well. In addition, the Golden Globes feature special awards, such as the Cecil B. DeMille Award for lifetime achievement, recognizing outstanding contributions to the entertainment industry.

Summary of the 79th Golden Globes Awards
79th Golden Globes
- When: Jan. 9. 2022
- Where: The Beverly Hilton, Beverly Hills, CA
As expect, Succession won for best television drama and for best actor
The HBO Max show about powerful media mogul Logan Roy and his bickering kids did what many expected it to do. It won for best television drama, beating out Lupin, The Morning Show, Pose, and Squid Game.
Heading into the Globes, Succession was one of the few sure things. We chose the show to sweep the drama awards. We were right on two of the most important, best drama and Jeremy Strong for best actor.
Strong picked up the Globe for his performance as Kendall Roy, beating out veteran Brian Cox, who plays Logan. HBO has greenlit season 4.
Season 4 could be the shows final since at the end of season 3, the Roy patriarch was on the verge of selling his media empire to a tech company.
Save for Jeremy Strong, our acting predictions fell flat
We were dead on about Jeremy Strong or Brian Cox winning for best drama actor. We weren’t even close when it comes to the other acting awards.
Our pick, Benedict Cumberbatch in The Power of the Dog, lost to Will Smith, the chalk, for his performance in King Richard. Nicole Kidman beat out Jessica Chastain and Olivia Colman for her portrayal of Lucille Ball in Being the Ricardos.
We though Leonardo DiCaprio or Peter Dinklage might win for best actor in a comedy or musical. Instead, Andrew Garfield took home the prize for his performance in tick, tick . . . Boom!.
According to our handicapping, Alana Haim, the main character in Licorice Pizza, was a lock. Rachel Zegler won for West Side Story.
We predicted West Side Story would lose and we were wrong . . .
Speaking of the Spielberg movie, West Side Story won for best film in the comedy or musical category. We didn’t think it had a shot after it failed at the box office.
In a way, West Side Story, although the favorite, was a surprise. The buzz on Licorice Pizza had risen to a deafening level.
The Paul Thomas Anderson movie looked like a shoo-in, but, once again, Globe voters decided to go with the familiar, a Steven Spielberg remake of a 1960’s Academy Award winner based on a famous Broadway show.
. . . But we were right about a television comedy beating Ted Lasso
Although we bombed when picking West Side Story, we were right about Ted Lasso not winning for best musical or comedy television show.
We thought Reservation Dogs or Only Murders in the Building might pull off the upset. Instead, the Jean Smart vehicle, HBO Max’s Hacks, took the top award.
Hacks’ victory means the streamer grabbed the top television golden Globes. That could be a big deal come Emmy time.
We were also right about The Power of the Dog beating Belfast and Mare of Easttown losing the best television miniseries or film award
We did pick the best film drama winner. Not only that, but we were right about best director. Jane Campion won for best director while The Power of the Dog beat out Kenneth Branagh’s Belfast.
We were also right about Mare of Easttown losing to either The Underground Railroad or Maid. The Underground Railroad grabbed Globe gold.
Because the Grammy’s postponed their ceremony from Jan. 31 to a later date due to the Omicron variant, the next big award thing to happen are Oscar nominations on Feb. 8.
