Last week, we took a look at the top five choices to win the World Cup. All five appeared to have flaws, which is why in this week’s blog, we’re going to study the four second tier nations. Those four nations: Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Portugal have flaws but the four-second tier nations offer much better odds than the top five, which make them more attractive to win the title. See below for a FIFA World Cup Betting update and odds analysis for the Germans, the Dutch, the Belgians, and the Portuguese.

World Cup Second Tier Choices Update – Overlay, Underlay, or Fair Odds?
- Germany +1000
Few teams head to Qatar with as much talent as Germany. Although the team isn’t as loaded as it has been in the past, the Germans boast a terrific mix of young and old.
The old is in the form of one of the greatest players in World Cup history, Thomas Mueller. The former Golden Boot winner is now 33.
Mueller is Germany’s captain. He will make sure youngsters Serge Gnabry, Timo Werner, Joshua Kimmich, and 19-year-old Jamal Musiala play under control and keep their heads in the game.

- Netherlands +1200
The Netherlands was a +1400 choice. After watching the Netherlands in the the Nations League, it’s obvious the team is gearing up for a deep World Cup run.
The Dutch have gone 5-1 in Nations League play. 1 of the wins was a super-impressive 4-1 victory over the Belgians. The victory impresses big time because it happened in Belgium.
The Orange should field their best team since the days of Arjen Robben. 31-year-old captain Virgil Van Djik will ensure young players like Memphis Depay and Frenkie De Jong keep it together.
Like all European teams, the Dutch might struggle playing in the hot temperatures. But unlike England, France, and Spain, the Netherlands offers above +1000 odds. The odds are for sure fair.

- Belgium +1400
Belgium’s Nations League performances have not impressed. We can’t just decide a team isn’t worth backing based on the Nations League performances, though.
The problem with doing so is forgetting that the Nations League is sort of a UEFA money grab. Still, winning 3, drawing in 1, and losing twice isn’t good for a team that’s supposed to challenge for the World Cup in November.
Belgium was a +1200 choice before playing in the Nations League. The team is older, which means the window might be closed. Even at +1400 odds, Belgium is a pass.

- Portugal +1400
Like Belgium, Portugal has a 3-1-2 Nations League record. The Portueguese has more younger talent than Belgium, which makes them a better play, but Portugal has a big time problem.
The team continues to lean on Ronaldo. Christiano remains a top soccer player. At the age of 37, he’s not one of the world’s best.
Unlike Messi, who said this is his last World Cup, Ronaldo has made no such declarations. His club career is a disaster.
So it’s tough to understand why Ronaldo is the captain of the talented Portuguese side. It’s hard to know where Ronaldo’s head is at, which means we can’t back Portugal with confidence.
