Last week, FIFA drew for World Cup groups. Although all groups aren’t set, there’s enough information for us to make some predictions. Check out the groups for the 2022 Qatar World Cup along with their FIFA World Cup Odds as well as the teams that should win each group and finish second in each group.
FIFA World Cup Classified Teams – Odds to Win their Respective Groups
2022 Qatar World Cup
- When: Nov. 21 – Dec. 18
Group A
- Winner: Netherlands -250
The Netherlands got a great draw. One of the top rated teams on FIFA’s rankings must play host Qatar, Senegal, and Ecuador. The Netherlands, no doubt, will win Group A without a loss.
- Second: Senegal +450
Ecuador will challenge Senegal for second place. But Senegal is an underrated squad. They’re much better than many believe and should have no trouble finishing second in one of the weakest groups at the 2022 World Cup.
Group B
- Winner: England TBD
The U.S. won’t challenge England. Neither will Scotland, or Wales, or the Ukraine, one of which will grab the final spot in this group. Nor will Iran. England should roll through their group opponents.
- Second: Scotland, Wales or the Ukraine TBD
The United States is overrated. Canada blasted them in the last head-to-head. Costa Rica made them look like a bad soccer team in the U.S.’s last. Scotland, Wales, or the Ukraine, whichever team ends drawing into Group B, will be a better pick to finish second than the U.S.
Group C
- Winner: Argentina -250
Argentina has become more than just Messi. The Argentinians have a bunch of young players, including 24-year-old Lautaro Martinez, who is quickly becoming one of the best in the world.
- Second: Mexico +500
Was Mexico playing possum during CONCACAF World Cup Qualifying? Maybe. El Tri turned it on late. Mexico was so effective in their later qualifying matches that they ended up tying Canada for the top spot in CONCACAF.
Group D
- Winner: Denmark TBD
Denmark is a good soccer team. The Danes showed up at EURO 2020 even though Christian Ericksen missed the tournament due to a heart attack. Denmark’s players know what each other is thinking. So expect a great World Cup.
- Second: France TBD
France should win this group. But the French doesn’t always play their best during the group stage. So they’re suspect to take the group even though they’re the second choice behind Brazil to win the World Cup.
Group E
- Winner: Spain TBD
Spain is young and inexperienced, but that’s okay. The Spanish have talent for days. They will be ready once group play starts and rate a better chance than the Germans to win the group.
- Second: Germany TBD
Costa Rica might end up beating New Zealand. If that happens, Los Ticos could make waves. But Germany and Spain should overcome Costa Rica and finish first or second. Spain, because they have more overall talent, figure to win the group while Germany finishes second.
Group F
- Winner: Belgium -190
Belgium versus Croatia figures to be the toughest battle during group play. The Croatians are a solid soccer team. But Belgium still fields an incredible starting 11. Kevin De Bruyne and Romelu Lukaku will ensure the Belgians beat the Croatians.
- Second: Croatia +220
Croatia should have no trouble versus Canada or Morocco. The Canadiens looked great early in CONCACAF WC Qualifying. But lately, Canada has struggled. Morocco isn’t close to Croatia’s level.
Group G
- Winner: Brazil -220
Serbia, Cameroon, and Switzerland are quality squads. So the Brazilians won’t skate to the second round. The chalk, though, is loaded like they are every World Cup. Neymar, Gabriel Jesus, Rodrygo, Junior, Richarlison, etc.
- Second: Switzerland +450
Switzerland is underrated. 25-year-old Breel Embolo is a 6’ 2” player in the Erling Haaland mold. He’s not as good as Haaland, few are, but the Swiss can run their attack through the Monchengladbach player, giving them a striker that their opponents must mark.
Group H
- Winner: Portugal -160
In the 2-0 victory over North Macedonia, the one that sent Portugal to the World Cup, Bruno Fernandes scored both goals. Ronaldo has learned to play with Fernandes, which makes Portugal one of the teams to fear to win it all.
- Second: Uruguay +200
Uruguay isn’t as strong this World Cup as they have been in past WCs. But as long as Luis Suarez plays at a high-level, the Uruguayans should move on from Group H. Also, South Korea and Ghana just aren’t as good as Uruguay.
