Diego Maradona scores twice in the 1986 World Cup semis to beat Belgium

Before there was Messi, there was Maradona. Diego Maradona was a walking legend. The reason so many believed Argentina would win the World Cup was because the South American nation boasted the best player in the world.

Maradona did not disappoint. He dominated the 1986 World Cup. One of his brightest moments happened versus Belgium.

Diego dribbled his way to a couple of amazing goals that sent Belgium into a tailspin. The Belgians never recovered and Maradona and the Albiceleste made it to the World Cup Finals.

Maradona dribbles his way the greatest goal in World Cup history

Maradona delivered what many believe is the greatest goal in World Cup history. Diego received the ball at midfield and then used his incredible dribbling to get past two players.

Maradona pulled away from England’s defense and then, instead of sending the ball to a couple of teammates near the box, Maradona continued the amazing run into the box and scored the second goal of 2 goals he had versus England.

Argentina’s 1978 World Cup win

The 1978 World Cup happened in Argentina. The nation was under a dictatorship, which is one of the reasons some soccer fans forget the Albiceleste’s first WC trophy victory.

Also, there was no Maradona. But the nation Argentina beat, the Netherlands, many considered the best in the world.

Not only that, but Argentina’s 1978 World Cup victory opened the door for the Maradona era, which led to the Messi era. So we should give props to Cesar Luis Menotti’s crew.

God lends Argentina a hand

The Hand of God isn’t just one of the most well-known incidents in Argentinian football history. It’s up there in the top ten most memorable moments in World Cup history.

In his first goal versus England, Maradona stood up and appeared to deliver a header into the net. Of course, it wasn’t. Instead, it was Diego’s hand that delivered the goal.

Maradona himself called the goal “The Hand of God”. On why Argentinians continued to love Maradona after he cheated to score the goal, Diego’s teammate, Jorge Valdano, said that in Argentina “deceit has more honor than ability”.

Maradona and Argentina win in 1986

Argentina and Germany have faced off in three World Cup Finals. Germany has won 2-of-3, including beating Lionel Messi and Argentina in the 2014 final.

But although the Germans have the head-to-head WC Finals lead, Maradona and Argentina got the best of Germany, then called West Germany, in 1986. The victory over the Germans in the ’86 Finals stamped Argentina as a world soccer power on par with rival Brazil, Germany, and Italy.
