The Final Four Goalies Who Can Win the World Cup Golden Glove and The Pick
Winner: Dominik Livakovic – Croatia
Croatia has a massive match against Argentina on Tuesday. By the time you read this we will know if Croatia is going to a second straight World Cup Finals or if the Argentinians will get a chance to win their third Cup.
In any case, the winning pick won’t change. Dominik Livakovic has done more than enough to win the Golden Glove even if Croatia falls 2-0 to the Argentinians in regulation.
Livakovic blocked three shots in Croatia’s win against Japan. He saved a penalty against Brazil. But his penalty saving prowess isn’t the only reason to give the award to Dominik.
The Croatian keeper also had 3 saves against Japan and an amazing 11 saves against Brazil. Livakovic should have the Glove in the bag.
Second: Yassine Bounou – Morocco
Morocco’s defense is fantastic. So Bounou doesn’t always get a chance to show how great of a keeper he is. Versus Spain, though, Bounou’s brilliance was on full display.Yassine saved 3 Spanish penalty kicks, including one from Spanish star Sergio Busquets, in Morocco’s victory over El Rojo. During the game, Bounou had a save.
In the win over Portugal, Bounou had 3 saves. If Bounou stops Mbappe, Griezmann, and Giroud from scoring on Wednesday, he could push Livakovic for the Golden Glove.
Third: Emiliano Martinez – Argentina
There is a huge drop off from Livakovic and Bounou to Martinez. But Emiliano did score two saves against the Netherlands during the penalty shootout.
But Argentina’s goalie has also had some bad games, including against the Netherlands where the Dutch scored 2 in regulation. Still, Martinez’s performance during the shootout keeps him in the running for the Glove.
Fourth: Hugo Lloris – France
Lloris is a fantastic keeper. The Tottenham goalie has a lot of skill and is worthy of the Golden Glove. Unfortunately, he plays for a team where his performance doesn’t always matter.
France is one of the few soccer powers that relies mostly on its attack. The backline has been a mess during the World Cup, which is why Lloris has yielded at least 1 goal in every French game.
But France’s attack is breathtaking. The French can score from anywhere on their opponent’s side. Tchouameni’s goal against England outside of the box proves it. When you’ve got a great attack, though, your goalie can suffer because the keeper must defend against counter attacks.
Hugo wants another World Cup trophy. He doesn’t care if he wins the Golden Glove, which is good because unless he stops 3 penalty shots against Morocco on Wednesday, Lloris won’t take home the Glove.
