The United States heads to the Qatar World Cup playing decent but not spectacular soccer. History says the U.S. will find it difficult to make it to the knockout stage. Although the Americans have notched their ticket to the Round of 16 three times, in 1994, 2010, and 2014, Team USA didn’t even qualify for the 2018 WC. Will the U.S. move on or is the group stage the ceiling for Christian Pulisic and his teammates? Check out FIFA World Cup Odds on the United States and a knockout stage prediction.

United States Odds to Win the FIFA Qatar World Cup
- United States +10000
The odds on the U.S. make them a huge underdog to win the World Cup. One of the reasons for the massive odds is because Team USA has never gone past the Round of 16.
The Americans have had trouble even making it to the knockout stage, which is strange because the women’s national team has won World Cup titles. Not only that, it’s rare that the United States fails in sports competitions on the world stage.
Still, the U.S. squad is desperately worse than top favorites like Brazil, England, and France. It’s not close to having talent like a team like the Netherlands.
So if you back the United States to win the World Cup, you’re doing so because you want to root for them, not because you really believe they have a shot. That doesn’t mean the odds aren’t fair. It just means your intent in backing the United States shouldn’t be to make a massive score.
Why United States will move to the next round
The Americans not only play in a weak group, but the team has plenty of UEFA European League stars on which to lean.
Matt Turner is a goalie for Arsenal, Antonee Robinson is a defender for Fulham, and Tyler Adams plays for Leeds. Weston McKennie plays for Juventus and Christian Pulisic is one of the Chelsea’s most important players.
The U.S. is deep with talent. That talent should carry them to the Round of 16.
Why United States won’t move to the next round
The U.S. has quality players. Also, based on the other teams in Group B, the United States should have no trouble making it to the second round.
But Team USA doesn’t always play to their potential. The U.S. knew the chances of them failing to qualify for the FIFA World Cup were minimal heading into their final qualifying match versus Costa Rica.
But losing 2-0 to Los Ticos is inexcusable. Then in their last Nations League match, the United States drew 1-1 against El Salvador. Teams that move the Round of 16 don’t struggles versus squads like El Salvador.
Final Analysis – The U.S. can make the knockout stage by default
If the U.S. didn’t play in Group B, they’d for sure fail to make it to the knockout stage. But outside of England, Group B isn’t that deep.
Neither Iran nor Wales should beat the United States. Iran has a decent roster. But word is the Iranians are fighting among themselves.
If you’re not a cohesive squad at the World Cup, you won’t move past the group stage. Wales isn’t fighting among themselves, but the Welsh don’t have as deep of a team as the Americans.
Still, although Iran and Wales aren’t as good as Team USA, it’s hard to give the United States a green flag to the Round of 16.
The United States will get close, but the team tends to lose focus. So we’ll air on the side of caution. The U.S. fails to finish second in Group B and make it to the Round of 16.
