First Female Refs at the Men’s World Cup Competition, Security, & a Deal to Sell Booze

2022 Qatar World Cup

  • When: Nov. 21 – Dec. 18

First three women refs at the 2022 World Cup

For the first time, FIFA will send women referees to the pitch at a men’s World Cup. FIFA has hired three women to be refs during WC matches.

The three women are: Japan’s Yoshimi Yamashita, France’s Stephanie Frappart, and Rawanda’s Salima Munkansanga.

In an interview, Yamashita expressed excitement but also pressure at being one of the first female referees at a men’s WC. The pressure exists because she knows she must perform to help open more doors for other women.

FIFA said that in addition to hiring three female refs, they’ve also hired 3 women assistant referees. Brazil’s Neuza Back, Mexico’s Karen Diaz Medina, and Kathryn Nesbitt from the U.S. will also step onto pitches at Qatar.

Qatar will use fighter jets to patrol skies above the World Cup

The host nation took ownership of the first batch of Eurofighter Typhoon jets last week. Qatar is beefing up its security ahead of the tournament in November.

The Eurofighter Typhoons will be part of the Joint Typhoon Squadron. Qatar calls the Joint Typhoon Squadron the 12 Squadron.

The Middle East nation isn’t alone in their attempt to build security leading up to the 2022 Qatar World Cup. The United Kingdom is helping Qatar put together an air force that will dissuade rogue nations and groups from attempting an attack.

Per UK Defense Secretary Ben Wallace, the joint squadron with the Qatari Air Force will help “patrol the skies” during the tournament.

The mission for the joint planes will be to counter terrorism. So far, there have been zero well-publicized security threats. But that doesn’t mean something won’t happen during the 2022 World Cup.

In addition to the Eurofighter Typhoons, Squadron 12 will also include F-15QAs, tactical transport helicopters called the NH-90, a naval counterpart to the NH-90s, and the Rafale fighter.

Teetotaling Qatar will sell booze at the WC

Although few expect the United States to have much of an impact at the 2022 World Cup, something American will be front and center.

Qatar officials said the country will allow Budweiser sales before kickoff at stadiums and after games at the same stadiums. Bud has been the official beer of the World Cup since 1986.

Qatar is one of the few Middle Eastern nations that allows some alcohol sales. Hotels with licenses can sell alcoholic beverages to their patrons. But up until last week, if you hadn’t purchased a premium ticket to one of the various corporate events at this November’s WC, you were out of luck when it came to consuming alcohol.

When FIFA granted Qatar the 2022 World Cup, it was with a caveat. Qatar had to respect FIFA’s corporate sponsorship partners. One of the most important is AB InBev, the maker of Budweiser.

The U.S. is going to have a hard time making it to the World Cup knockout stage. At least the King of Beers will reign, which means the United States will have one winner at the 2022 Qatar Word Cup.
