Ons Jabeur and Gabrine Muguruiza Crash Out

One of the tournament’s top players and the 2016 champion, Gabrine Muguruiza, has suffered a devastating defeat in the opening round of the 2022 French Open, losing to veteran Kaia Kanepi 2-6, 6-3, 6-4. With that, Muguruiza became just another name on the list of big players who haven’t had a good day in Paris.

Perhaps even more surprising than Muguruza’s defeat was Ons Jabeur’s loss in the opening round when she had to admit defeat to Poland’s Maga Linette.

The world no.56 put on a terrific display on Sunday, proving not only that she can compete with the best but that she can also claim big scalps, as she defeated the current no.6 in the women’s tennis world in three sets 3-6, 7-6(4), 7-5.

Thiem’s Woes Continue

Although Dominic Thiem wasn’t priced as one of the favorites to win in France, his R1 exit has shocked the tennis world. The Austrian tennis star, who made the finals of the French Open twice before, got ousted from the French tennis event by world number 87 Hugo Dellen, who defeated Thiem in straight sets.

Thiem’s defeat, while a surprising one, was hardly shocking. The Austrian tennis star hasn’t had the best start to the season, and it seems like he has yet to find his footing, or better said, Thiem has yet to fully recover from his injury.

Interestingly, Thiem has yet to win a match since March’s wrist injury. That includes first-round exits from Challenger Marbella, Serbia Open, Estoril Open, Madrid Open, Italian Open, Geneva Open, and now the French Open.

Moreover, Thiem has won just one set across those seven tournaments, and even that came in the Serbia Open, where he lost against Millman 3-6, 6-3, 4-6.

Felix Auger Aliassime Steps Up

While some of the biggest names in the tennis world crashed out of the 2022 French Open, Felix Auger Aliassime made a spectacular comeback in R1 to edge his way into the second round of the Grand Slam.

The world no.9 faced off against Peru’s Juan Pablo Varillas and soon found himself two sets down before turning on his jets to complete an incredible comeback. Felix showed nerves of steel to claim the next two sets to level the match and completed the comeback with 2-6, 2-6, 6-1, 6-6, 6-3.

With an incredible comeback win, Auger Aliassime locked in his career-best placement at the French Open, having crashed out of R1 in both of his last two visits (2020, 2021). With that, Felix Auger Aliassime continues his strong results at Grand Slams.

He made QF in Wimbledon, SF in U.S. Open, and added another QF in Australia earlier this year. Those mark Auger Aliassime’s best Grand Slam placements of his career.

Naomi Osaka Edges past Patricia Maria Tig

World no.2 Naomi Osaka of Japan edged past Romania’s Patricia Maria Tig with 6-4 and 7-6. After winning the match, the 23-year-old Japanese tennis star agreed to a quick on-court interview even though he has refused to carry out any media obligations during the French Open.

She has cited post-match interviews are detrimental to her mental health, but perhaps they are more damaging to her wallet, given that she was fined £15,000 for refusing to attend the post-match conference.

“For me, playing on clay is a work in progress,” said Osaka. “Hopefully, the more I play, the better I will become. It’s a beautiful court. I’ve only played two matches here, one before the roof and one now, so hopefully, I’ll keep it going.”

With that win, Osaka is now through to the second round, where she’ll take on world no.102 Ana Bogdan. The latter beat Elisabetta Cocciaretto (6-1, 6-3).

This year marks Osaka’s fifth appearance on the French court, where she has historically struggled to deliver. In her last five starts, Osaka hasn’t managed to make it further than the third round. Last year, she was eliminated by Kateřina Siniaková (4-5, 2-6), who broke her 16-consecutive Grand Slam wins.

Kalinina stuns Kerber in straight sets

Although not a massive upset victory, Anhelina Kalinina’s 2-0 win over the world no.27 Angelique Kerber is definitely one to talk about.

Unless you were betting on Kerber to win the 2021 French Open, you must appreciate matches where an underdog upsets a heavy favorite.

There’s some charm in seeing an outsider win against a former world no.1 and three-time Major champion, and that’s exactly what has happened on Sunday.

On the other side, it isn’t too shocking to see Kerber underperform on the French clay. The German tennis star has struggled with her form this year and is now 8-9 on the season.

Roland-Garros is also the only Grand Slam Kerber has yet to win in her career. Her best placement here was quarter-finals in 2012 and 2018. She has crashed out of the first round in each of her last three starts.

Dominic Thiem crashes out of French Open

If you thought the 2021 French Open would end without major upsets, it took only one day to prove you wrong. And there’s nothing wrong with that.

The two-time finalists and one of the leading betting favorites to win the 2021 French Open, Dominic Thiem, suffered a shock first-round defeat against world no. 68 Pablo Andujar. The latter eliminated the Austrian tennis star in spectacular fashion, even though he was extremely close to getting swept 0-3.

The 35-year-old Spaniard beat Thiem through perseverance and determination. After trailing 0-2, Andujar turned on his jets and reverse-swept the world no.2 with 6-4, 6-4, and 6-4 to produce what is one of the magnificent upsets of the year.

This marks the first time in Thiem’s career that he has failed to make it past the first round in France. It also marks only the eighth time Andujar has ever made it into the second round of the French Open and the first time since 2015 when he lost against Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the third round.

Tsitsipas Beats Zverev in a Five-Set Thriller

Greece’s Stefanos Tsitsipas edged out Alexander Zverev with 6-3, 6-3, 4-6, 4-6, 6-3 on Friday, June 11, in the semi-finals 2021 French Open. Tsitsipas defined all the odds with his showing to become the first Greek player to reach a Grand Slam final.

A clash no tennis fan should have missed featured two up-and-coming tennis stars in Tsitsipas and Zverev. The two are widely regarded as two successors of the “Big Three” when Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, and Roger Federer eventually retire, and they showcased they have the talent to fill in their shoes.

For a match with such high-profile names, the Friday’s spectacle on the French claymore than lived up to the expectations. The 2021 French Open semi-final between the no.6 and no.5 in the world lasted for three hours and 40-minutes and proved to be exactly what you would have expected.

While both Zverev and Tsitsipas both already won the season-culminating ATP Finals as well as Masters titles, neither has ever landed a Grand Slam title before. The motivation to win from both players was as high as it can get, and it showed.

Tsitsipas took an early lead of the series with two commanding 6-3 victories to set himself up for what seemed like a 3-0 sweep of the favored German. Things, however, did not go as planned for world no.5.

Zverev was not ready to give up his chance to win his career-first Grand Slam just yet and mounted an attack. He successfully tied the series at 2-2 with 6-4, 6-4, and forced set five.

Even his remarkable comeback, however, wasn’t enough to stop the in-form Tsitsipas, who emulated his success from the first two sets and stole the victory from underneath Zverev with yet another 6-3.

With this victory, Tsitsipas made it to his career-first Grand Slam tournament finals. He has previously come close to achieving that feat on three occasions, including two semi-finals exits at the 2019 and 2021 Australian Open, and the 2020 French Open, when he got beaten by Djokovic with 3-6, 2-6, 7-5, 6-4, 1-6.

Tsitsipas’s remarkable run at the French Open, however, isn’t that surprising. The Greek has been the leading player on the ATP tour this year. He has not only won in Monte Carlo and Lyon, but Tsitsipas also claimed more clay-court matches than any other player. 

“The opening game was nerve-wracking and so intense – it was the most important game in the fifth set,” said Tsitsipas.

“I came back, stayed alive, and had the crowd with me. They gave me energy. I still felt there was hope and opportunities to fight back. That’s what I did.”

Zverev’s defeat against Tsitsipas marks his career-second Grand Slam semi-finals exit. He has previously reached the last four at the 2020 Australian Open.

Ashleigh Barty is out with an Injury!

World no.1 and one of the main French Open betting favorites to win in France, Ash Barty is out of the tournament with an injury. The 25-year-old Australian has sustained a hip injury and was forced to retire from her match against Magda Linette.

Linette won the match with 6-1, 2-2, and is now through to the 1/16 finals, where she’ll face off against world no.26 Ons Jabeur. This marks Linette’s best run at the French Open since 2017 when she made it to R3.

She has since crashed out in the second round in 2019, sandwiched between two R1-exits in 2018 and 2020. For the 2019 French Open champion, Barty, this marks her third R2-exit in seven starts in France.

It’s an unfortunate circumstance for the world no.1, who had to take the medical time-outs between the sets with Linette but was unable to keep pace with the in-form Polish tennis star. With Barty’s exit, the field became much thinner, but that doesn’t guarantee anything for the remaining players.

Elina Svitolina edges past Ann Li

World no.6 Elina Svitolina has made it past world no.75 Ann Li with 6-0, 6-4. The match was much closer than expected, with the Chinese player putting up strong resistance and should feel she missed a big chance to impress.

Li had Svitolina on the ropes in the second set when she was 4-1 up. However, the Ukrainian proved once more why she is regarded as one of the best in the world with a phenomenal comeback to steal the win with 6-4.

With that loss, Li ended her French Open debut in the second round. She has traveled to France only once before in her five-year-long career, crashing out of the qualifiers in 2020.

Svitolina, on the other side, is still two steps away from matching her career-best placement in French Open. She has reached the quarter-finals three times in her eight appearances and three times in her last six outings.

Last year, Svitolina lost her QF bout against Nadia Podoroska with 2-4, 4-6. Svitolina will now face world no.33 Barbora Krejcikova on Friday, June 4.

Matteo Berrettini Lorenzo Musetti and safely into the third round

The men’s ninth seed Matteo Berrettini beat Federico Coria, 6-3, 6-3, 6-2 in straight sets to advance into the third round of the French Open. With that win, the Italian has matched his career-best placement in France from 2018 and 2020.

For Coria, this loss sees him fail to match his performance from his debut French Open in 2020 when he reached R3. Then, he lost against the eventual quarter-finalist Jannik Sinner with 3-6, 5-7, 5-7.

Berrettini will face off against world no.91 Kwon Soonwoo on Friday, June 4. The South Korean tennis player has had a solid run so far, beating Kevin Anderson (7-5, 6-4, 2-6, 7-6) and Andreas Seppi (6-4, 7-5, 7-5).

Berrettini’s compatriot Lorenzo Musetti will join him in R3 of the French Open after a commanding 7-5, 6-3, 6-2 victory over world no 57 Yoshihito Nishioka. With that win, Musetti reached R3 of the tournament in his debut appearance.

It also marks Musetti’s best Grand Slam placement to date, having failed to qualify for the Australian Open earlier this year.

This one should undoubtedly end in straight sets!

No. 13 Andrey Rublev Vs Sam Querrey

22-year-old Russian Andrey Rublev has gone a stellar 25-6 on the year with three titles, including the recently completed Hamburg Open where he took out world No. 6 Stefanos Tsitsipas in a three-set thriller. 32-year-old Sam Querrey has gone an uninspiring 3-5 on the year and comes into this match off a discouraging 3-6, 6-7 (3) first round loss against the unheralded Pedro Martinez at the Rome Masters.

Rublev owns a 2-1 edge in head-to-head meetings while winning each of the last two meetings, including a 6-3, 6-3 win at the Adelaide International earlier this year. Right now, Rublev is clearly a player on the rise while Querrey is heading in the wrong direction while looking like a player that is aging extremely quickly. Rublev gets the win in this clash, but Querrey takes on set before falling.

Mayar Sherif Vs No. 2 Karolína Plíšková

The 24-year-old Sherif is ranked 124th in the world rankings. The native of Egypt comes into this match fresh off a humbling 6-3, 2-6, 4-6 first round loss against Harmony Tan at the ITF Saint-Malo tournament in France.

World No. 4 Karolína Plíšková is 13-6 on the year with and made an impressive run to the finals of the Rome Open before falling to world No.2 Simona Halep 6-0, 2-1 before retiring with a lower back injury.

While these two have never met before, this one should be over in a hurry as Pliskova is on an entirely different level of tennis as Sherif, who has yet to become a regular on the WTA Tour. Pliskova wins and advances via a serious smackdown.

No. 8 Aryna Sabalenka Vs Jessica Pegula

Sabalenka, the 22-year-old world No. 12 has gone 18-9 on the year with one title at the Qatar Open where she beat Petra Kvitova 6-3, 6-3 in the finals. 26-year-old Jessica Pegula is ranked 60th in the world rankings. The American is 17-8 on the year and while she’s failed to claim a title, Pegula has recorded some impressive wins over a handful of top-ranked stars.

More importantly, Pegula took the only career head-to-head meeting by beating Sabalenka 6-2, 2-6, 6-3 in the round of 16 at the Western & Southern Open last month. This time around though, I’m going with the higher-ranked Sabalenka to get her revenge as she is the better and more experienced clay court performer in this pairing. This one should go the distance, but the world No. 12 wins and advances.

However, Novak can struggle in opening matches of tournaments. If you want better odds, play the handicap wagers on Djokovic and give up a few games or sets.

Zverev tuned up for the French Open in the Banque Eric Sturdza Geneva Open. He actually has a semifinal match on May 24 against Federico Delbonis. After Zverev wins that, he will most likely face a player on Saturday in the finals. Sounds like a lot of tennis, but Zverev is using the tournament to practice for the French Open. He’ll be sharp on Sunday.

Schmiedlova isn’t on Osaka’s level. She struggles in second-tier tournaments while Osaka has won the last two Grand Slam Tournaments. Naomi, especially if the hand is truly healed, should dominate Schmiedlova on Sunday.

This might be the most intriguing matchup in Round 1. Venus Williams made it all the way to Round 4 at he Miami Open in March. Simona Halep knocked her out of that tournament. Venus made it to Round 3 at the Internazionali BNL dItalia. Johana Konta beat her 6-2, 6-4.

Svitolina is ranked higher, but she could be vulnerable here. She lost to Pauline Parmentier in Round 1 at the Mutua Madrid Open. Then, she lost in Round 2 to Victoria Azarenka at the Internazionali BNL dItalia. Venus is worth a look to knock out Svitolina early.
