While there have been few upsets as of yet with the exception of world No. 2 Daniil Medvedev losing to Brazilian qualifier Thiago Seyboth Wild, the next couple of days should be interesting with plenty of intriguing matchups.

2023 French Open: Singles Third-Round: June 2, 2023

Frances Tiafoe (-102) vs. Aslan Karatsev (-124)

Surprisingly, Frances Tiafoe and Aslan Karatsev have never played each other on the ATP Tour. Tiafoe, who has a knack for playing well in Grand Slams, scored a straight sets victory over Filip Krajinovic in the first round. Karatsev, meanwhile, needed four sets to beat Australian Alexi Popyrin. 

Tiafoe is the 12th seed in the tournament. Neither he nor Karatsev have advanced past the second round at Roland Garros, but Tiafoe has the benefit of having won a clay court tournament earlier this year at ATP Houston. He’s 6-3 in the last year on clay with an 82.2 winning percentage in service games. Karatsev is 14-6 on clay in the last year with a 78.8 percent winning percentage in service games. 

Tiafoe, especially at near even money, is a great value bet for today.

Lorenzo Sonego (+248) vs. Andrey Rublev (-340)

Lorenzo Sonego and Andrey Rublev meet in the third round on Friday at Roland Garros. Sonego is coming off of a straight-sets victory over Ugo Humbert, while Rublev required four sets to beat Corentin Moutet in the second round. 

While it’s always tempting to bet on a potential upset, the smart play here is to back Rublev, even at inflated -340 odds. The Russian is 12-3 on clay this season and won in Monte Carlo in April.

Emma Navarro (+122) vs. Bianca Andreescu (-156)

Canadian Bianca Andreescu, when healthy and playing at her best, is among the best players in the world – she proved as much when she beat Serena Williams to win the 2019 US Open. However, that was almost four years ago and it has been a grind ever since for Andreescu. She shocked 18th-seed Victoria Azarenka, however, in the first round with a 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 victory.

Emma Navarro also rallied in her first round match to beat Erika Andreeva 6-2, 3-6, 6-4. Andreescu is 1-2 on clay this season and Navarro is an impressive 26-6. There’s great value in taking Navarro for the upset in the second round matchup.

Other News and Notes from Roland Garros

Medvedev, the world No. 2 and one of the favorites to win the French Open, dropped the final two sets of his five-set affair against Seyboth Wild on Tuesday. That really leaves his quarter of the bracket wide open for someone like Jannik Sinner, Alexander Zverev, or Tiafoe to make a run.

In another upset, Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime dropped his first-round match against Fabio Fognini. In the women’s draw, Lesia Tsurenko scored a massive upset over Barbora Krejčíková. Sloane Stephens, who has prior Grand Slam success but has struggled as of late, is looking like the player she was a few years ago; the American beat Karolina Pliskova in the first round and is now through to the third round having only lost seven games.

2022 French Open Analysis From Day 4 – Wednesday, May 25 Matches | ATP Betting

Auger-Aliassime and Isner Come Through

Felix Auger-Aliassime and John Isner have emerged victorious from their 2022 French Open Round 2 bouts and are now headed into the third stage of the Grand Slam.

Of the two, Auger-Aliassime looked much more convincing on Tuesday, when he eliminated Ugo Carabelli in straight sets, with 6-0, 6-3, 6-4, to book a spot in R3 of the French Open, for the first time of his career. He had previously never made it past the first round across two appearances.

On the other side, Isner eliminated the local favorite Barrere in four sets (3-1). Isner had to dig deep to come out ahead from the bout, but it never seemed like he wasn’t in full control, beating the French tennis star 6-4, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6.

With that victory, Isner is now into R3 of the French Open for the seventh time of his career, as he takes one step closer to claiming his maiden Grand Slam title.

Auger-Aliassime is now set to face off against Filip Krajinovic, who made it past Borna Bojo in the second round. Meanwhile, Isner will face off against Bernabe Zapata Miralles, who stunned Taylor Fritz in R2.

Emma Raducano Crashes Out

For the second Grand Slam, Emma Raducanu suffered a three-set exit from R2, as she suffered another devastating defeat on the big stage on Tuesday. The Romanian tennis superstar lost against Aliaksandra Sasnovich by 6-3, 1-6, 1-6.

As the score would suggest, Sasnovich crushed Raducanu in the third set, but that’s only partly true. Admittedly, Sasnovich has had a purple patch at the start of the second set, but early in the third, Raducanu had her backed on the ropes, soaking up five breakpoints.

That was also the moment when Sasnovich found some excellent ripostes despite being under immense pressure and saved herself from getting dragged into a close affair.

By the end of the match, Sasnovich was the clear best player, having struck 45 winners to 24 unforced errors, which are elite-level figures. On the other side, Raducanu could only manage 17 and 33, respectively.

Interestingly though, those numbers don’t show the real reason why Sasnovich won – her incredible accuracy of drop shots, which served her well on clay. Moreover, it served her well against Raducano, who rarely uses them.

It was an astounding performance from Sasnovich, who earned her spot in the next round of the 2022 French Open. Her next opponent is Angelique Kerber, who Sasnovich will face off against on Friday, May 27.

It will also mark Sasnovich’s first French Open R3 appearance of her career, having never made it this far before. Since her debut in 2016, Sasnovich has crashed out of R1 twice and out of R2 four times – including in 2020 and 2021.

Serena Williams is Out!

Serena Williams is still one Grand Slam short of catching up to Margaret Court’s record of 24. And we now know for sure that she won’t be reaching that goal in France.

Williams’s latest attempt for a record-equalling 24 Grand Slams came to a sudden stop on Sunday, June 6, when the 39-year-old lost (6-3, 7-5) to Elena Rybakina. This marks the fourth consecutive year when Williams failed to make it past R4 in France.

Williams won the French Open three times in her career (2002,2013, 2015) and came close to adding her fourth title in 2016, when she made it to the finals. Unfortunately, she was unable to get past Garbiñe Muguruza, who won with 7-5, 6-4 to win her career-first Grand Slam.

The American has since traveled to France four times but never made it past the fourth round. She made it to R4 in 2018, R3 in 2019, R2 in 2020, and added another R4 exit this Sunday.

By beating Williams, Rybakina is now through to the quarter-finals, where she’ll face off against Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova on Tuesday, June 8. For Rybakina, this is her first-ever French Open quarter-finals appearance after R1 and R2 exits in 2019 and 2020.

Pavlyuchenkova has made it to the final eight once before (2011) but has since never reached past R3.

Federer Withdraws From French Open

Joining the list of big names that have exited the French Open is Roger Federer, who withdrew from the competition as a precaution to protect his body. As stated by the Swiss tennis superstar, he is unwilling to risk injuring his troublesome knee ahead of Wimbledon.

“After two knee surgeries and over a year of rehabilitation, it’s important that I listen to my body and make sure I don’t push myself too quickly on my road to recovery,” said Federer.

“I am thrilled to have gotten three matches under my belt. There is no greater feeling than being back on the court.”

The world no.8 and 20-time Grand Slam title winner has made it to the final 16, beating the likes of Denis Istomin (3-0), Marin Cilic (3-1), and Dominik Koepfer (3-1), before calling it quits ahead of his match with world no.9 Matteo Berrettini.

Federer ended his 19th French Open in R4, marking his worst placement since 2014 when he lost to Ernest Gulbis (2-3). Since reaching the semi-finals in 2005, Federer has finished worse than quarter-finals only twice, including four finals and one title from 2009.

Tamara Zidanšek Continues Her Miracle Run

Slovenian Tamara Zidanšek has made it past Sorana-Mihaela Cirstea with 7-6, 6-1 to reach her career-first Grand Slam quarter-finals. The 23-year-old is ranked world no.85 and has never made it past R2 across all Grand Slam tournaments.

Her career-best achievements in her four-year-long career include two R2 exits at the Australian Open (2019, 2020) and R2 in Wimbledon (2019). For Cirstea, this loss marks her 11th pre-quarter-finals exit – a feat she has reached only once, in 2009.

Zidanšek will now face off against world no.35 Paula Badosa on Tuesday, June 8. The two have never met before, which should make for an exciting bout, where the 2021 Madrid Open semi-finalist will hope she can be the one to stop Zidanšek en route to her first major title.

Djokovic Eases past Pablo Cuevas

World no.1 and 2020 French Open finalist Novak Djoković beat Pablo Cuevas in straight sets (6-3, 6-2, 6-4), convincingly secured his spot in the next round.

It was another day at the office for the Serbian tennis superstar, who has reached the French Open quarter-finals in all of his last 11 trips to France. He failed to reach the last eight only twice in his career – 2005 when he retired in R2 and 2009 when Djokovic lost to Philipp Eberhard Hermann Kohlschreiber (4-6, 4-6, 4-6).

For Pablo Cuevas, this marks his second consecutive R2 exit from the French Open. In 12 starts, the Urugvaian has never managed to make it past R3, which he has reached only four times in his career.

Djokovic’s next opponent is world no.93 Ričardas Berankis, who will make his first French Open R3 appearance on Saturday, June 5. Berankis has had a very solid showing thus far on the French clay.

He has beaten world no.32 Ugo Humbert (6-4, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4) and James Duckworth (7-5, 2-6, 7-6, 6-0). Saturday’s clash between the two will mark only their fourth meeting on the court.

Djokovic won all three of his head-to-head meetings with Berankis. That run includes a 3-0 sweep in the second round of the 2020 French Open.

Russian Yana Sizikova arrested for match-fixing

Russian tennis player Yana Sizikova has been arrested at French Open by French Police due to supposed match-fixing. As revealed, the 26-year-old doubles specialist was taken into custody on Thursday night due to the ongoing investigation.

Sizikova and her compatriot Ekaterina Alexandrova lost their opening doubles match earlier on Thursday against Ajla Tomljanovic and Storm Sanders. However, the arrest relates to last year’s Roland Garros.

Police revealed that the bookmakers issued alerts for unusual betting patterns during Sizikova’s first-round women’s doubles match. There she lost to Andreea Mitu and Patricia Maria Tig alongside Madison Brengle with 6-7. 4-6.

During that match, hundreds of thousands of euros were placed on a break of serve at 2-2 in set two. Sizikova lost three of the points and produced two double faults.

More information about Sizikova’s case should be available in the coming days.

Victoria Azarenka and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova will meet on Sunday

Victoria Azarenka beat world no.24 Madison Keys with 6-2, 6-2 to secure her spot in the fourth round of the 2021 French Open. This marks Azarenka’s best placement on the French clay since 2013, when she made it to the semi-finals.

The Russian has since traveled to France five times, reaching R3 only once (2015) and failing to make it past R2 in the next four outings. For Keys, exiting in R3 improves her R1 exit in 2020, when she lost to Zhang Shuai (3-6, 6-7).

Still, Keys can’t be satisfied with her performance, considering she has reached the semi-finals in 2018 and added a quarter-finals exit in 2019.

Azarenka will face off against world no.32 Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova on Sunday, June 6. This will mark Pavlyuchenkova’s second-best run at the French Open since 2011 when she made it to the quarter-finals.

Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova has enjoyed a very promising run through the French Open thus far. She made it past world no.95 Christina Hale (6-4, 6-0), world no.76 Ana Tomljanovic (6-2, 6-3), and the third-seeded Aryna Sabalenka (6-4, 2-6, 6-0) on Friday.

It will mark the first meeting between Azarenka and Pavlyuchenkova since they clashed in April 2019 in Monterrey, where Azarenka won 2-0. Azarenka is also 2-0 up against the Russian on clay with a 2-0 victory in Madrid in 2013 and 2-1 in Rome in 2021.

Azarenka met with Pavlyuchenkova six times across the last 12 years and lost only once, way back in 2015 when Pavlyuchenkova celebrated a 1-0 victory in Cincinnati.

Naomi Osaka out of French Open

Naomi Osaka is out of the 2021 French Open, and no, this isn’t the case of another upset defeat akin to Dominic Thiem’s loss against Pablo Andujar. Instead, Osaka decided to withdraw from the tournament amid a row over the press conference.

As states by world no.2, taking to press causes her anxiety issues, which was why Osaka declined to attend any post-match press conferences. Her decision earned her a $15,000 fine by the French Open and a warning that should she continue avoiding press conference; she could face expulsion from the tournament.

The 23-year-old, however, beat the tournament organizers to that and withdrew from the second Grand Slam of the year herself. In her announcement, Osaka cited the effect of her interactions with the press on her mental health.

“This isn’t a situation I ever imagined or intended when I posted a few days ago,” said Osaka

“I think now the best thing for the tournament, the other players, and my well-being is that I withdraw so that everyone can get back to focusing on the tennis going on in Paris.”

Osaka was supposed to face Ana Bogdan in the second round after she beat Patricia Maria Tig. Due to Osaka’s withdrawal, the Romanian received a direct bye into round three.

Jennifer Brady eases past Anastasia Sevastova

Australian Open runner-up Jennifer Brady breezed past Anastasija Sevastova on Monday, June 1, with 6-3, 6-3 to reach the second round. This matches best performance at French Open from 2018 and 2019.

The 2020 U.S. Open champion has never reached round three at Roland Garros in four starts but is now on an excellent path to lock in her best showing in France to date.

Last year, Brady crashed out of the French Open in the first round, losing to Clara Tauson 4-6, 6-3, 7-9. Regardless, world no.13 traveled to France off her best result on clay earlier this season, when she made it to round three in Madrid.

Brady’s next opponent Fiona Ferro edged past world no. 297 with 6-1, 1-6, 6-4. The two will face off on Tuesday, June 2.

Mikael Ymer beats Roberto Carballes Baena in five sets

Mikael Ymer made it past Roberto Carballes Baena in the first round of the French Open. The world no.105 beat the favored Spaniard in three hours and 36 minutes in the first five-set match of the day.

With this victory, Ymer advances into the second round of Roland Garros, matching his best placement from 2019. To date, the Swede has yet to make it further than R2, although he was somewhat unfortunate with his draws.

In his debut appearance in 2019, Ymer made it past Blaž Rola with 6-3, 6-3, 7-6, but crashed out of French Open with a 1-6, 3-6, 6-7 loss to the eventual quarter-finalist Alexander Zverev in R2. Last year, Ymer had to face Novak Njovović in the first round of the French Open and lost with 0-6, 2-6, 3-6.

This year, Ymer won’t have to face a top-five rated player until at least 1/8 finals, when he will likely cross paths with the “King of Clay,” Rafael Nadal.

He faces a tougher opponent on Friday in Kei Nishikori than he has at Roland-Garros. Nishikori disposed of Quentin Halys and Jo Wilfried-Tsonga. Tsonga took the first set in that match 4-6 before Nishikori got it together. Djere should be the dog. He might play enough to challenge Nishikori, though. That means he’s worth taking a shot on at the odds.

2019 French Open Odds: Grigor Dimitrov +190 / Stan Wawrinka -130

Dimitrov battles his second Top 30 seeded opponent at Roland-Garros on May 31. After beating Janko Tipsarevic in the first round, he took on Marin Cilic in Round 2. That was an entertaining 5 set marathon with a couple of sets floating into second set tiebreakers.

Grigor came out ahead. Stan Wawrinka hasn’t broken much of a sweat in his wins over Jozef Kovalik and Christian Garin. But, Wawrinka could be vulnerable here. Dimitrov is a fighter. If he jumps on Wawrinka early, Stan might never recover.

Arguably the top match on Friday in Round 3, Elina Svitolina got to take a breather after Kateryna Kozlova withdrew from their second round match. Elina easily beat Venus Williams in the first round. She’s in great form based on that performance.

Garbine Muguruza beat Johanna Larsson 6-4, 6-1 in Round 2. Svitolina has beaten Muguruza in 5-of-8 head to head matchups. The day of rest most definitely gives her an edge in this. Unless she’s ill-prepared, she should knock Garbine out of the 2019 French Open on Friday.

2019 French Open Odds: Karolina Pliskova -185 / Petra Martic +138

Karolina Pliskova has had no issues so far at the French Open. She won her first couple of matches about as easy as a tennis player could. Martic has had no problems in the first couple of rounds, either.

This is an interesting matchup for favored Karolina because in the head-to-head, Martic has owned her. Petra is 3-1 in the head to head battle. Martic is playing as well as Pliskova at Roland-Garros. That makes her the pick in this because she offers the much better odds.
