Golden Boot Odds: Mbappe, and Messi Betting Favorites to Win Award

Written by on December 5, 2022

We’re now well into the Knockout Stage at the FIFA 2022 World Cup in Qatar with a pair of quarterfinal matches set. France, England, Argentina, and the Netherlands have all punched their tickets to Round of 8.

Kylian Mbappe has led the way for France and is now the huge betting favorite to win the Golden Boot as the top scorer in the World Cup. The PSG forward has five goals through four matches. Seven players are tied for second with three goals. Let’s have another look at the top contenders to win the Golden Boot so you can place your bets on the FIFA World Cup Props.

Mbappe’s Impressive World Cup Resume

Mbappe tallied a pair of goals Sunday in France’s 3-1 victory over Poland, setting up a quarterfinal match against England in the process. One of the favorites to win both the Golden Boot and Golden Ball award in Qatar, Mbappe scored remarkable goals from just outside and inside the box in the 74th and 90th minutes against Poland.

More impressive than the goals is Mbappe’s overall World Cup resume. He became only the second teenager to score in a World Cup final in 2018 and now has nine career World Cup goals. That’s more than Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

It’s worth noting that Mbappe is still just 23 years old. He is five goals away from passing Just Fontaine for Les Blues’ all-time goalscoring record at the World Cup and is eight away from passing Miroslav Klose for the all-time lead.

Mbappe is already seventh all-time in goals for France with 33 in 63 matches.

Messi Magic

Messi probably won’t score more career World Cup goals than Mbappe, but he’ll need to overtake Mbappe in Qatar if he intends to win his first Golden Boot. Messi has three goals at this World Cup and now has eight total.

Messi scored another wonderful goal in Argentina’s 2-1 win over Australia on Saturday. He’ll look to move closer to Mbappe on Friday as Argentina meets the Netherlands in the second of four quarterfinals.

The Others

Richarlison (Brazil), Marcus Rashford (England), and Alvaro Morata (Spain) all have equal odds at +1600 and have each scored three goals. Richarlison and Morata still have a Round of 16 games to go, however. Brazil meets South Korea on Monday, while Spain plays Morocco on Tuesday.

Speaking of England, Harry Kane remains a long shot of winning the Golden Boot. One of the pre-tournament favorites, Kane scored his first goal in England’s quarterfinal win against Senegal on Sunday. Of course, England would likely need to reach the finals for Kane to have a shot at catching Mbappe.

Olivier Giroud, Mbappe’s Les Blues teammate, is another candidate to win the Golden Boot. He became France’s all-time leading scorer in international competition with a goal against Poland on Sunday.
