In the second game, again without Betts and Freeman, the Dodgers won 6-3 on March 19. Ohtani hit a solo homer, Kiké Hernández hit a two-run homer and Edman added a solo shot. Landon Knack got to win, pitching two scoreless innings of relief. Berti had three of Chicago’s eight hits.

Cubs Start West Coast Trip

The Cubbies have had a very tough schedule so far and since that two-game sweep against the Dodgers in Japan to open the season have gone an impressive 7-4 but lost a chance to finish off a home sweep vs. Texas on Wednesday, falling 6-2 as Chicago finished its first homestand at 4-2.

Freddie Freeman Returns For Dodgers

The big news for Los Angeles will be the return of All-Star first baseman and former NL MVP Freddie Freeman from the injured list as the team starts a home stand.

It also happens to be Freddie Freeman Bobble head Night at Dodger Stadium, depicting Freeman’s walk-off grand slam from Game 1 of the 2024 World Series.

L.A. has been without Freeman since the team’s first home series against the Detroit, when he went 3-for-12 (.250) with two homers and four RBIs.

The day after that series ended, Freeman slipped in the shower at home and aggravated his surgically repaired right ankle.

He went into this season knowing that he would have to manage his right ankle, on which he had offseason surgery after playing through a bad sprain during the Dodgers’ postseason run.

Enrique Hernández has played first in Freeman’s absence, with Hernandez hitting just .103 on the year. Strangely, Hernández only has four hits all season and they’ve all been home runs.

Yoshinobu Yamamoto

He’s on the mound Friday. Yamamoto took the loss after allowing an unearned run on three hits and three walks in six innings last Friday against Philadelphia. He struck out five.

Yamamoto contained a loaded Phillies lineup Friday, but he received no run support and was out dueled by Jesus Luzardo’s seven shutout frames for the Phillies. He got 12 swings and misses on 97 pitches in the ballgame, posting a CSW of 28 percent.

Yoshinobu has now tossed at least five innings and given up two runs or fewer in each of his first three starts this year.

Coming in at 95.5 mph from a low 5.5 ft. release height, Yamamoto can create exceptional attack angles in the upper third of the zone, Yamamoto’s splitter is his No. 1 pitch.

Yamamoto, meanwhile, beat the Cubs in Tokyo on March 18 as he allowed one run over five innings. He gave up an RBI double to Miguel Amaya in the second, but that was it, with four Ks and one walk. L.A. is an MLB-best 7-0 at home, and we think that continues in a close game. Dodgers 4, Cubs 3.
